Bird of the week: The Nightingale

For about six weeks each spring – in April and May – a very special songster’s voice graces the English countryside. So my first bird of the week has to be the nightingale (Luscinia megarhynchos).
Whether you’re a birder or not at all interested in birds, whether you are familiar with bird names such as dotterel, corncrake and lesser redpoll or whether your knowledge of bird species starts and ends with blackbird and robin – everyone has heard of the nightingale.
This bird is a legend, a myth that has been mentioned in poems, songs and stories for hundreds of years. So – what do YOU know about the nightingale? It’s a bird…and it sings by night? Correct (although it does also sing during the day).
Have you ever actually heard a nightingale though? Do you know what it looks like?
Sadly, most people’s answer to these questions will be ‘no’.
This is sad because one of the reasons is the nightingale’s decline – fewer than 7,000 males can be found in the whole country, most of them in the Southeast of England.
It is also very sad because listening to a male nightingale’s song – and it is the males that sing in order to attract females and to defend their territory – is pure magic and an experience you will never forget. No other bird can hit and creatively combine sequences of low and high notes quite like a nightingale can. I can’t really describe it – but it touches the heart.
Check out this page on the RSPB’s website for an example of a nightingale’s song:

http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/n/nightingale/index.aspx
Seeing one is another matter – nightingales are very elusive birds and the males love to sing hidden in a bush or thicket.
Some might think that a nightingale – the great songster – must also have a striking appearance. Wrong – males impress females with their fantastic voices and thus don’t need a colourful plumage. Plus – if you give away your location by singing day and night with a wonderful and loud voice you certainly don’t want predators to be able to spot you easily. So nightingales are basically brown with a white-ish chest and roufus-coloured tail. However, I don’t agree with people who call a nightingale ‘plain’. I think it is a very beautiful bird indeed.
I would like to share some of my favourite nightingale photos with you, all taken within the last few days – I feel very privileged to have heard and seen nightingales on numerous occasions, some perching right in front of me – this certainly doesn’t happen very often.

This is the best time of year to watch and listen to all of the resident and migrant birds that have just returned from Africa (including the nightingale). They are now singing their little hearts out, show off their best plumage and are more easily seen than at any other time of the year. I shall introduce you to more of those wonderful birds in the next few weeks!

O NIGHTINGALE that on yon blooming spray
Warblest at eve, when all the woods are still,
Thou with fresh hopes the Lover’s heart dost fill,
While the jolly Hours lead on propitious May.

PSN Update

Earlier article

Sony today announced that friends lists and trophy data are unaffected by the PSN Network outage. The news will come as a big relief to gamers, some of whom have spent months and years building up their achievements. Sony has also said it hopes to have some parts of the network back up and running by May 3rd, that would be almost two weeks after the initial outage.

In another crumb of comfort for gamers Sony has said it will do something special for its customers for their, ’extraordinary patience’. It will have to be something momentous if they have any hope of turning around this PR disaster.

Currently Sony has found no evidence that credit card data has been stolen (data it claims was encrypted in contrast to other data such as names and addresses). The safest policy at this stage would be to check your bank statements for any unusual activity.

Sony may now face a large penalty fine from the UK information commissioner’s office for failing to secure customer information such as names and addresses. However, given the maximum fine is only £500,000, it is likely to be the least of the technology giant’s worries.

Speculation remains rife as to who was behind the attack. Currently the consensus view among experts is that major criminals are responsible, given its huge scale.

Trump Presidency Bid Damaged as Obama Silences Critics by Producing Birth Certificate

On Tuesday Barack Obama produced his birth certificate, rebutting wide spread conspiracy theories that he was not born in the US. The president said, ‘I have watched with bemusement, I’ve been puzzled at the degree at which this thing just kept going on.’ The president went on to say that he had far more important issues to deal with and couldn’t afford to be distracted by sideshows.

The revelation comes as a blow to potential Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, the flamboyant businessman and star of the apprentice, who recently gave new life to the claims. It has been suggested that Trump was hoping to garner support from the estimated 45% of Republicans who believed the claims had some merit. Trump said, ‘he was honoured to play such a big role in hopefully, hopefully getting rid of this issue’.

Meanwhile British politician John Prescott harshly tweeted. ‘I wonder if Trump can provide a birth certificate for his hair?’

No doubt some will persist with the claims. However there was overwhelming evidence of Obamas US birth even before the certificate was released. Hawaiian newspapers documented his birth almost 50 years ago. It is interesting that the certificate has only just been released. Has Obama deliberately been holding the certificate back so that he can now knock his political rivals off balance? If so it may well have worked.

Royal Wedding Playlist; The Songs For Kate and William.

Frost and MUZU’s music video experts have been busy researching William and Kate facts and debating song choices in order to come up with the ultimate street party playlist for the royal wedding on Friday.

We have selected songs that will most resonate with William and Kate, and which may even be among special requests given to Guy Pelly, Prince Harry’s close friend, who will be DJ-ing at the reception.

http://www.muzu.tv/wedding/. There is also a competition to win a £100 gig voucher. We’re inviting people to watch our first dance playlist and vote for the song they think will be Will and Kate’s first dance http://www.muzu.tv/wedding/1st-dance?channelId=818636).

Here’s our MUZU.TV royal wedding street party playlist:

1. Adele – Make You Feel My Love

This song was originally written by Bob Dylan, who has an honorary degree from St Andrews University, where William and Kate met – at breakfast. Adele made the song famous again with her debut album ‘19’.

ADELE – Make You Feel My Love

2. Paul McCartney – Dance Tonight [Video ID 215641]

It’s widely reported that William and Kate have asked Macca to sing some Beatles classics at their wedding. Sir Paul does have a tradition of performing for royalty and was a highlight of the televised concert to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. There’s another connection: cakes. Fiona Cairns, who is making the royal wedding cake, also supplies Paul McCartney with a Christmas cake every year.

Paul McCartney – Dance Tonight

3. Abba – Dancing Queen

The team wanted to include at least one Abba song for Kate who loves the 80s Swedish band. She also looks a little bit like the young Frida Lyngstad (one of the two girls that made up the band).

Abba – Dancing Queen

http://www.muzu.tv/abba/dancing-queen-music-video/210780

4. Black Eyed Peas – I Gotta Feeling [Video ID 482065]

The Black Eyed Peas performed at the 2007 Diana Tribute Concert and it’s rumoured that they’re invited on Friday. Looking at their schedule they certainly don’t have any live performances booked…

Black Eyed Peas – I Gotta Feeling

5. Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes – (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life [Video ID 54057]

…as featured in the classic 1987s films, Dirty Dancing, starring Patrick Swayze. William loves 80s dance music and the couple have been snapped smooching on dance floors in the past… perhaps he plans to surprise his bride-to-be with his own version of ‘the lift’ on Friday?

Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes – (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life

6. Dancing in the Street – David Bowie / Mick Jagger [Video ID 34355]

The British public voted this as their number on street party song for the Royal Wedding, according to a PRS for MUSIC. Also Mick Jagger serenaded William and Kate and a crowd of people at a party to celebrate the famous Basil’s Bar on the privately owned island of Mustique in 2008. Flamboyant owner Charles Basil is said to have been invited to the wedding.

David Bowie & Mick Jagger – Dancing In The Street

7. Kings Of Leon – Sex On Fire

The band met Harry backstage when they played London’s O2 last December and drummer Nathan Followhill thrashed him at table tennis that same night. Nathan has since said he’d be delighted to play for either brother’s weddings. We’re not sure he made it onto the guest list for Friday though.

Kings Of Leon – Sex On Fire

8. Elton John – Candle in the Wind [Video ID 236869]

Three reasons for picking this song. First, Sir Elton John is a solid friend of the princes, and has been invited the wedding. Second, the song is closely associated with Princess Diana after he sung it at her funeral in 1997, also in Westminster Abbey (the single went on to sell more 33 million copies worldwide, and is the best selling single in history…) And third, it was voted top choice for the couple’s first dance by the British public according to PRS for MUSIC.

Elton John – Candle In The Wind

9. George Michael – Faith

George was a close friend or Princess Diana’s but we’re told he didn’t get an invitation to the wedding. He has however recorded a cover of Stevie Wonder’s romantic 1972 track ‘You And I’ for the couple as a wedding gift! It has reportedly been given the royal seal approval from the Palace. The team chose the 80s classic Faith, in tribute to Williams love of 80s music – we’re sorry we didn’t have more space for Spandau Ballet, Culture Club, Wham…

George Michael – Faith

10. Katy Perry – Firework

A great celebration track. Katy Perry says she plans to gatecrash the wedding, with Russell Brand dressed up as the Queen. We’re not sure they have our blessing…

Katy Perry – Firework

11. Marili Harwood – Billy William & Kate’s Royal Wedding

The 36-year old singer made history this month when she became the first woman to secure a maternity clause in her contract with a record label – in her case, Island records. She won’t work more than 20 hours a week in the second trimester of her pregnancy and can stop work on 1 July (her baby is due in August).

Marli Harwood – Billy (William & Kate’s Royal Wedding)

12. James Blunt – Stay the Night

James Blunt is taking a day off from his North American tour to be at Westminster Abbey April 29. Blunt and Will both served in the British army’s Household Cavalry, though not at the same time. Instead of the obvious ‘You’re Beautiful’ we chose one of Blunt’s new songs. The lyrics are pretty appropriate for the end of reception: “I hope you stay the night, the morning on its way, our friends all say good bye there’s no where else to go, I hope you stay the night…” We reckon she probably will, Will.

Clegg AV Gaffe

Nick Clegg was accused of making another gaffe today, as the comments he made yesterday against Boris Johnson backfired. Clegg has accused Boris for his anti AV stance, accusing him of fighting against a system which he himself was elected under.

However Boris was elected under the SV system. Today Labour peer and electoral expert Lord Campell-Savours accused Clegg of not understanding his own system he said, ‘Nick Clegg doesn’t seem to know how the AV system he is advocating actually works’.

He continued to argue that Labour rejected AV in 1998 because it was too complicated and could produce a freak result. The SV system is designed to avoid some of the flaws of AV by making it harder for outside candidates to win. Liberal democrats have repeatedly opposed the SV system and yet now Nick Clegg is supporting it!

For arguments for and against AV, see our AV article below
