Withnail And I Gallery Review

withnail-and-i-stillThe free booze was flowing generously and the sounds of Jimi Hendrix were pounding as Withnail and I returned to their old stomping ground in Camden Town, basking in the glorious summer heat. June sees the start of an exhibition at the Proud Camden Kitchen of a remarkable set of candid, behind the scene stills taken during production of the cult British classic, taken by the renowned film set photographer Murray Close.

Murray Close is considered the go to man for film production photography in a career that has spanned over three decades. He got his big break at the age of nineteen, working for the great Stanley Kubrick (himself a photographer in his youth) on the set of horror adaptation The Shining. The publicity still  of Jack Nicholson’s face peering with menace through a freshly axed door has become synonymous with not just that film, but for Nicholson’s bad boy persona and has become an icon of horror cinema. Close has worked for some of the biggest names in the business such as Spielberg and Eastwood, and on some of their best known works. Tucked away in his extensive C.V. is the low-budget 1986 comic drama Withnail and I, written and directed by Bruce Robinson. It’s a semi-autobiographical tale of two out of work actors (Richard E.Grant and Paul McGann) in 1960’s London, who tired of waiting for the phone to ring and drowning themselves in a sea of liquor and lighter fluid, decide to go ‘on holiday by mistake’ to the remote rural setting of Penrith in Cumbria. Their situation improves little. It’s a terrifically British comedy and by that I mean that as hilarious as it gets, every scene is undercut with an overwhelming melancholy. It is every bit as achingly sad as it is funny. Over the years it has become the definition of the word ‘cult’ creating an entire legion of fans across the years, not least amongst countless students who attempt to match drink for drink what the characters consume in the film.

Close’s portraits of the film’s production are a joyful and revealing spectacle. They range from the cosy intimacy of the London based segments  (the warmth of Uncle Monty’s flat radiates from images) to the roaming, overwhelming countryside locale that seems to swallow cast and crew whole. The collection captures the comradery of the cast and crew, and also fits in with the almost anarchic tone of the films story. Grant seems to take centre stage in many of the portraits. The character of Withnail can’t help but infiltrate each shot he is in and that unique blend of charisma and chaos permeates from his pictures, as intoxicating as anything he consumes in the film. As he does in the film, McGann remains a calm centre in the midst of his colleagues tomfoolery. His handsome features would not look out of place in a fashion shoot and they create a nice contrast with the displays of comic caricature. Look out to for an appearance from Ringo Starr; fellow Beatle George Harrison was one of the driving forces behind the films production.

The title of Withnail and I: The Finale is given a deeper, bittersweet meaning by the sad passing earlier this year of Richard Griffiths. The established character actor had many hits to his name (Pie In The Sky and Harry Potter were standouts) but none more memorable than that of Uncle Monty; Withnail’s eccentric uncle, fellow would be thespian with a passion for cooking and lust for ‘I’. His gentle yet unmissable presence was another key factor to the films success and its staying power over the years. This gallery serves up a fitting tribute to not just a great character but, by all accounts, a genuinely lovable human being.

Withnail and I: The Finale is running from June 21st to September 1st at Proud Camden, Stables Market in Chalk Farm Road

Frankie and Benny’s 2 Courses For £10.95 Review

photo1

We went to Frankie and Benny’s in the Rotunda in Kingston last Wednesday after we saw the excellent new Star Trek film  review here. Frankie and Benny’s is a fun, affordable Italian American style restaurant. it has an excellent atmosphere. The decor is good and I like the old black and white photographs of Frankie and Benny up on the walls. We sit in a stylish booth with a comfy banquette on each side. The service staff were friendly and attentive.  We take advantage of the two course for £10.95 deal available all day on every day except Saturday.

To start with we have a blue cheese mushroom crostini. Button mushrooms tossed in a rich blue cream sauce and served over toasted ciabatta. Rich and creamy.

photo5

We also have the crab bruschetta. Tomato, red onion, crab, basil and pepper again over toasted ciabatta. You can’t go wrong with a good Bruschetta.

photo3

For our mains we have the Philly cheese steak sandwich. Steak sautéed with red pepper, red onion and sliced mushrooms. Piled high in a toasted ciabatta bun with philly cheese sauce. As you can see it was pretty decadent. Frankie and Benny’s always gives you excellent portion sizes.

We also try the veggie Gnocchi bake. Gnocchi tossed tomato sauce, red onion and green chilli, topped with mozzarella cheese. Very tasty and lots of chilli.

At two courses for £10.95 you can argue about the price. A great place to feed the whole family.

The Socrates Project Book Launch

More than 90 influential members of the media, outdoor sports, environmental agencies and the publishing world joined explorers, adventurers, politicians and senior business men and women at the launch of The Socrates Project.

mark beaumont. The Socrates Project

We drank amazing Blue Cocktails (Blue Gold Cocktail Recipe: Equal measures of blue curacao and vodka poured over plenty of ice, top up with lemonade and stir.) mingled and talked with the author, Daron Sheehan and Mark Beaumont amongst others. All in all, it was an amazing night and we are looking forward to reviewing the book.

The Socrates VIP launch.

The event, held between 6pm and 9pm on June 25th 2013 at Artemis, St. James Street, London, was described by guests as a “massive success” and “an important starting point to spread the word about The Socrates Project and its optimistic, thrilling and at times terrifying vision of our future”.

The event attracted a wide range of guests from different backgrounds including the leader of the Green Party, Natalie Bennett and journalists from The Guardian, Frost Magazine, Daily Mail, Sunday Mirror and Friends of the Earth. Guests heard from the author, Daron Sheehan, about the inspiration behind the creation of the sicads, “the robotic creatures created by humans to save us who are the main characters in this story” (more info about the sicads – http://the-socrates-project.com/hope-vs-greed/). As Mark Beaumont, ambassador of The Socrates Project, pointed out: “This is a book that doesn’t happily sit in any one genre. In truth, when Daron told me about the idea for The Socrates Project I had concerns; that it would be too sci-fi for me, and that it could come across as Daron preaching. I’m happy to say my concerns were not founded, in fact, this is a fantastic story but it also made me stop to think and reflect on some of the news stories that had recently caught my eye.”

Influenced by his vast experiences while travelling the world (during a three-year sabbatical from his successful investment career spanning 16 years), the author, Daron Sheehan, was encouraged to create the story with a view to turning it into a film, something the Nautilus Media team (responsible for publishing the book) is currently working on.

Blue Gold cocktails were served and guests were given a goody bag complete with a copy of The Socrates Project, nibbles for the train journey home, a recycled paper notepad and pen set and a TSP-themed Oyster card wallet. Following a Twitter competition, run by Literally PR (@literallypr), David Fuentes (@theperformer) won two free VIP tickets to attend the launch. Fuentes said: “It is great to be able to come along to an event such as this, particularly one that is so busy and full of interesting people”.

Music was provided by the incredibly talented Fergal O’Connor and Catriona Lightfoot, who performed the first live version of a song created in honour of The Socrates Project.

This book is for anyone who loves outdoor sports, adventure and travel, who wants to preserve our environment, conserve nature, and reduce the threat of pollution on our wildlife, for those of us who are prepared to put our heads above the parapet and discuss what could happen when civil unrest hits our streets even more regularly and more violently than it already is, when water is known as ‘blue gold’ and becomes more valuable to millions of us, including in the West, than ‘yellow gold’. The Socrates Project is fictional, but it presents a shocking account of what could be…
Synopsis

The Socrates Project is a secret attempt by the United Nations to avert the predicted collapse of our civilisations. Simon Oceandis heads up the sicads, who must blend modern science and ancient wisdom to find the solutions before time runs out.

Not everybody welcomes the Project. An influential secret society plots to discredit and destroy the sicads. Torn between the love of a beautiful scientist and a fiery tribeswoman, Simon discovers an exotic world of adventure and wonder. To find the answers to save humanity, he must undergo a deep inner journey, yet his life becomes a frantic race for survival…
