Top 10 Books Most Commonly Left On Flights | Holiday Reads

holidayreadssummerbooksA good read is one of the essential ingredients for a relaxing holiday, according to 80 per cent* of holidaymakers who always pack one for their travels. Despite this, around 600 books and 1,400 kindles are left on board British Airways flights every year.

The most common is The Holy Bible, accounting for six per cent of books left on board. Some of the more unusual books which have been found include notebooks, personal diaries, wedding sketchbooks and even a cheque book!

The British Airways survey found that books were still the most popular form of reading with three in five taking a book, compared to one in five taking an e-reader. Women are also more likely to own an e-reader (20 per cent) compared to men (15 per cent).

British Airways has compiled a list of the top 10 books most commonly left on flights over the past three months, as inspiration for good holidays reads this summer:

  1. Gone Girl, Gillian Flynn (Fiction, Thriller)
  2. King and Maxwell Series, David Baldacci (Thriller)
  3. The Fault in our Stars, John Green (Novel)
  4. Capital in the Twenty-First Century, Thomas Piketty (Business/Economics)
  5. Alex Cross, Run – James Patterson (Thriller)
  6. The Luminaries, Eleanor Catton (Novel)
  7. Michael Lewis, Flash Boys (Non-fiction)
  8. Fifty Shades of Grey (Freed), EL James (Romance)
  9. Arthur Conan Doyle, The Complete Sherlock Holmes (Novel)
  10. The Racketeer, John Grisham (Thriller)

Novels are the most common type of book found on flights (22 per cent), followed by crime thrillers, study and learning books, travel books, non-fiction and business and economics. The least likely genre to be left behind are ‘chick flicks’.

Some of the most popular biographies found on board were by John Bishop, Muhammad Ali and, no surprise during the Wimbledon Championships – tennis player Rafa Nadal.

The survey also found that Scottish travellers were the most likely to own an e-reader (28 per cent) – the least likely were East Anglia (nine per cent). Nine out of ten people from the East Midlands were likely to take a book on holiday, compared to just a quarter from the North East. Those from the South East are the biggest readers, taking at least two or three books on holiday.

For those prone to losing books, British Airways has a selection of audio titles in its extensive library collection. It includes Jennifer Saunders biography ‘Bonkers; My life in laughs’, Virginia Woolf ‘The mark on the wall’, Roald Dahl ‘The Great Automatic Grammatizator’, Anton Chekhov ‘The Chorus Girl’ and Charles Dickens ‘Great Expectations’ among many others available on selected long-haul flights in July.

Bio:
As leader/vocalist of Los Prisioneros–the most iconic Chilean rock band ever and front-runners of a new musical resistance to Pinochet’s dictatorship that burst through in the mid 80’s – Jorge González became idol and voice for an entire generation of oppressed youth, reaching the pinnacle of fame not only in Chile but throughout Latin America. Never afraid of stating his opinions with sarcastic humor and raw talent, he guided the trio through a series of best-selling albums full of bile and discordance. It was a journey that began with the disenchantment of straight-forward punk-a-billy and meandered through different song structures, including an occasional excursion into ballads and other cross-genres, and the use of samples, keyboards and electronic sounds.

After the first four albums – and with them having conquered a transversal fan base–González ventured into a prolific and eclectic solo career, which once again consecrated him as an innovator and a genius composer, raising his signature tell-it-like-it-is lyrics and his particular crooning style to new levels of adoration. With an incipient electronic scene rapidly developing in Santiago in the early 90’s, he was involved in several releases progressively exploring into dance music (Gonzalo Martínez y Sus Congas Pensantes, Los Updates, Los Sampler…) and eventually moved to Germany in the 00’s, where he has continued working in close circle with a group of notorious musicians from Chile and abroad.

Jorge González is now back again as Leonino, with an intimate set of new songs accompanied guitar (in English) featuring collaborations by brothers Pier and Juan Pablo Bucci, Mariano Scopel, Argenis Brito, Martin Schopf, Tobias Freund and Miguel Toro. All songs are produced by Leonino at Krossener Studios, Berlin, mixed and mastered by Tobias Freund (except There Is a Light, mixed by Matthew Styles-Harris). This album is for Gia. Published by HR in an edition of 500 copies.

Eva Green Exudes Timeless Beauty In The 2015 Campari Calendar

Sin City super star Eva Green announced as leading lady in Campari Calendar alongside Julia Fullerton-Batten, the first ever female photographer to lead the project

Campari has officially unveiled the Hollywood actress Eva Green as the star of the 2015 Campari Calendar. The stunning French born actress will take the lead role in this year’s iconic Calendar, entitled ‘Mythology Mixology’, which is dedicated to celebrating Campari’s unique and colourful history and the intrinsic stories linked to twelve of its best-loved classic cocktails.

evagreencampari

Eva Green began her career on stage in 2001 by starring in Turcaret directed by Gerard Deshartes and Jalousie en trios faxdirected by Didier Long. Her screen debut was in 2002 when she was cast as the female lead in Bernardo Bertolucci’s critically-acclaimed, The Dreamers. In 2006, Eva starred opposite Daniel Craig in Casino Royale, the 21st film in the James Bond franchise. Eva played “Vesper Lynd”, a mysterious blend of vulnerability and strength and the only woman that James Bond ever truly loved. The film was nominated for 9 BAFTA’s in February 2007 with Eva winning The BAFTA Rising Star Award, voted for by the public.

evagreen

Eva has most recently been seen in the Showtime TV Series Penny Dreadful which made its debut in May and sees her play lead role of Vanessa Ives alongside Timothy Dalton and Josh Hartnett. Eva has also recently been seen in the lead role of ‘Artemesia’ in 300: Rose of an Empire and in August will be seen starring in the Sin City prequel Sin City: A Dame to Kill for. Eva follows in the footsteps of previous Campari Calendar heroines, including stylish and passionate actresses, Salma Hayek, Eva Mendes, Jessica Alba, Milla Jovovich, Penelope Cruz and Uma Thurman.

Eva Green said: “To work with an iconic worldwide brand such as Campari is an honour and a privilege. There is something very special about this year’s theme as it strikes a compelling and almost magical balance between the classic and the contemporary. At the root of each image is this rich sense of history behind each of Campari’s best loved cocktails but they are presented in a way that is ultra modern, exuding imagination and style. It’s a thing of incredible beauty and clearly shows that whilst some of these recipes are over 100 years old, they are still relevant to and adored in today’s world. It is that sense of timelessness that has been captured so wonderfully in this year’s Calendar, thanks to the creative input from our photographer Julia Fullerton-Batten and all the talented people who worked on the set.”

Shooting the 16th edition of the globally renowned Campari Calendar is Julia Fullerton-Batten, a worldwide acclaimed and exhibited fine art photographer and the first ever woman to get behind the lens on the Calendar project. Julia founded her success in 2005 with ‘Teenage Stories’, an evocative narrative that depicts the transition of a teenage girl to womanhood. Since then, she has exhibited work all over the world. Her unusual locations, highly creative settings, street case models and cinematic lighting are hallmarks of her very distinctive style of photography, all of which are techniques evident in this year’s Campari Calendar.

Julia Fullerton-Batten said: “Campari has always had an inherent ability to recreate itself and keep the brand image fresh, inspiring and imaginative. This is a goal I constantly strive towards in my own work too, so you could say it was a partnership made in heaven from the very beginning. This year’s theme was an interesting challenge, as there was an important job to do in terms of taking historical anecdotes and invigorating them with a modern edge. I’m confident we managed to strike that delicate balance with this year’s imagery and it certainly helped working with someone as beautiful and as talented as Eva Green, who was just as passionate about getting the shots right as we were.”

How to Make a Fancy Felt Tape Measure Holder

1a craft, crafting, felt

1bcrafting

In part two of our series of easy summer makes, Made by Maggie’s Maggie Robb shows you how to turn scraps of felt into the cutest little tape-measure holders – the perfect summery gift, they look good enough to eat!

“It’s a real pleasure to make these adorable little treats – from choosing the lovely shades of felt to sourcing a special centerpiece button. Once you get into your stride, you’ll be able to finish one in about an hour, and the bits and pieces you’ll need can fit snugly into a small purse for easy portability – the perfect way to while away a summer’s afternoon in the park or back garden.”

You Will Need –

2crafting

Pieces of felt of different colours – a main colour plus two different complimentary shades for the flower petals and a green for the leaves.

Tip –If you can, use thick felt with a high wool content which is stiffer and softer than 100% acrylic felt and often comes in prettier, more subtle colours.

Sewing cotton in a matching shade to your main piece of felt
Embroidery thread in a contrasting colour to your main piece of fabric
Scissors
Needles and a pin
A novelty button to go at the centre of your flower
Bakers’ twine or thin cord for the loop
A small button to fasten the loop
A fabric tape-measure

3craftcrafting

Step 1 – With your tape-measure rolled up tightly use it as a guide for size and cut out three identical circles of felt – two for the lid and one for the base. Then wrap a piece of felt around the side of your rolled tape-measure to discover the length and height of your straight piece.

Step 2 –Cut out a flower shape with five petals from each of your contrasting shades of felt. It’s best if your top petal shape is slightly smaller than the one underneath. Arrange with your green piece at the bottom and the two petal pieces on top. Fasten with a couple of stitches using the cotton thread. Then stitch in place your novelty button, centering it in your flower to cover up your stitches.

Step 3 – Cut a short piece of bakers’ twine and tie it into a loop. Secure it to the underside of your top lid piece with a couple of stitches so that the loop hangs beyond the edge of the circle.

6crafting

Step 4 – Pin your bottom lid circle to the top one allowing the loop of twine to hang out between the two pieces. Then using a needle threaded with two strands of the embroidery thread, and beginning opposite the twine loop, sew the two pieces together using a neat blanket stitch.

Tip – Blanket stitch looks great against the colour and texture of felt – for easy to follow tutorials on how to master this decorative and versatile stitch, check out the internet and have a practice on some scrap fabric first. Once you’ve got the hang of it, you’ll be hooked!

7felt

Step 5 – Now take your straight piece of felt and roll into a pipe shape. Use your rolled up tape measure to check that it will fit snugly but not too tightly inside the pipe. Then with two strands of embroidery thread in you needle secure the pipe with a neat row of running stitches. For added security and neatness close the edge of the join with another row of blanket stitch.

8felttapemeasureholder

Step 6 – Thread your needle with the sewing cotton. You’re going to attach the edge of your 3rd felt circle to the bottom edge of the felt tube. If you need to, trim away any excess from the circle as you sew. For extra neatness make your starting point just beneath the seam of the tube.

Step 7 – To strengthen the open top lip of you holder and to help the lid sit neatly in place, seal it with a line of blanket stitch using the cotton thread. As before, start and finish at the seam of the tube.

9makingthings

Step 8 – Attach your lid to the felt tube with a couple of stitches. Make sure that you line up the lid so that the join is directly opposite the bakers’ twine loop.

10craft

Step 9 – Choose a small button for the loop to fit over and sew it into place.

11cutecrafting

Step 10 – insert your tape-measure and feel pretty pleased with yourself!

Bet you’ll want to make another one! They’re very moreish.
