Dancing the day away: The Piano Works bottomless brunch

As you might’ve noticed, here at Frost we have a penchant for prosecco filled bottomless brunches. What could beat it? A bottomless brunch with live music, of course. We headed to Farringdon to give The Piano Works ‘Brunch to the Beat’ a try and, whilst initially nervous as we first entered the lair, we quickly embraced the atmosphere and partied the day away.

At £50 per person, the bottomless brunch includes a two-course meal and two hours (none of that 90 minute malarkey) of unlimited drinks. Choose to wet the whistle with either prosecco, pink Italian sparkling wine, Aperol Spritz, Bloody Mary or mocktails.

You’d be hard pressed to find staff who support your quest for completely embracing the ‘unlimited’ part of the Brunch to the Beat experience too. Each time your glass is edging towards the dangerous ‘half full’ territory (yep, we’re eternal optimists), the suited and booted waiters are at your side, ready to serve and encouraging the party.

Although you can choose to purchase just the drinks at £35 a head, the quality of the food is not to be ignored. The chicken and waffles were the perfect mix of sweet and savoury and the crunchy, smokey batter that encased the chicken was packed with flavour. For dessert, it’s a modest list of options but they’re certainly fan favourites – sorbet, waffles, fruit salad or the pancake stack.

Above all else, it’s imperative we talk atmosphere. This bar is often packed with large groups of hens, stags and party people (which usually guarantees a good time) but the sheer brilliance of the on-stage professionals is something else. Music starts at midday with two piano vocalists, followed by a full band at 1.30pm. Once the band has bowled in, the party intensifies.

Playing only the audience requests with a fantastic jazzy twist to just about everything, the artists become the pied pipers, drawing crowds to the dancefloor with tantalising ease. To top this experience with the metaphorical cherry, it’s a no holds barred kind of affair, with all types of requests welcome. During our experience, we heard Ben E King, Jackson 5, Ellie Goulding and Lewis Capaldi – what more could you want!?

By the end of the session, it’s pretty much guaranteed that you’ll be dancing like you’re 18 again on the dancefloor at 4am. Although, the reality is that it’s 4pm, the harsh light of day awaits outside and the hangover is starting to prepare for its inescapable appearance… we wish you luck.

DISHING THE DIRT ON…DERMAPLANING

Quite literally, this will leave you with a dish of dirt that comes straight from the pores.

Dermaplaning is the latest skincare treatment on our radar and we were lucky enough to try it for ourselves at Regent’s Street Aesthetics, with the fabulously talented Aesthetics Nurse Practitioner and Founder of Regents Park Aesthetics, Kay Greveson.

We’ve rounded up some of the common questions (that we had ourselves too!)

What is dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is an intense exfoliating treatment which using a surgical scalpel to scratch away the dead skin, dirt and impurities

What results can I expect

The beauty of dermaplaning is that it has multiple benefits. First and foremost, the skin exfoliation. The process completely removes the dead, dull skin cells at the top of the skin and leave you with glowing, fresh skin that is super, super soft. because dead skin cells are taken off during treatment, your usual skincare will penetrate deeper and have a better effect. In addition, it combats that niggly, annoying peach fuzz

Is it painful

Not at all. There are some light scratching feelings but nothing painful. If anything, it’s quite relaxing

How long does the procedure take

You’ll be in an out within 45 minutes – simple and easy

What’s the aftercare

In the 24 hours post dermaplaning, you should avoid moisturisers with active ingredients (like salycillic acid etc) but after 24 hours, you should apply hydrating moisturiser to help the new skin cells get off to their best start. It’s really important to use a high SPF in your moisturiser and makeup because you’ll need extra protection from UVA and UVB rays

How long do results last

Your average skin cell cycle is 6 weeks therefore repeat treatments only need to be done every 6-8 weeks. This can be longer if combined with skin peels

Will my hair grow back darker

Facial hair does not grow back darker as the hair on your face is vellus hair which cannot transform into terminal hair follicles (like the hair on your legs)

Who would benefit from dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is great for everyone. The treatment is suitable for all skin types and can also be done during pregnancy and breastfeeding

How much does it cost

Prices vary depending on where you choose. At Regent Street Aesthetics, a session costs £80 or you can buy packages including a skin peel or microneedling from £120

Where can I book

CHOOSE CHICKEN! ORANGE BUFFALO RESTAURANT REVIEW

American style chicken wings on our Capital’s doorstep. Yep, that’ll do us!

Orange Buffalo started out as a food truck in Brick Lane and has since gone on to open its thriving Hoxton Square joint, with Tooting next in its sights (set to open this summer) – and we can see why the expansion is happening.

We headed down the Old Street branch, nestled into hipster setting, Hoxton’s Bar and Kitchen. To be frank, the food is incredible. The wings are smothered generously in sauce (which we’ll get to shortly) but even beneath this smothering, the skin remains crispy and the chicken juicy.

So, let’s talk sauces. Their range spans hugely and whilst you can stick to a more subdued heat, there’s a punch-packing bully of a chilli waiting for you to face its wrath – The Viper wing. Apparently, there are more people in the world who have climbed Everest than have gotten through a portion of these and they’re NOT for the faint hearted. Don’t believe us? This menu offers milkshakes and mini milk ice lollies to help handle the heat when you need it. Told you.

Obviously the chicken is the hero here but at the same time, you can’t neglect the sides. Buffalo style curly fries, crispy onion wings and the creamiest mozzarella sticks you might ever taste are all worthy of your tray space. Not forgetting the blue cheese dip, of course.

The whole look and feel of the dish screams America, with all food presented in baskets and the whole space is an ‘order at the bar and collect your tray’ style service, so you’re getting a full 360 experience.

Orange Buffalo Hoxton is definitely a vibey place to say the least so if you’re looking for a relaxed, tete a tete it might not be the spot for you but if you’re looking to get a bit rowdy over some wings before donning your dancing shoes, this is definitely the one for you.

Book a table at the Orange Buffalo website.

FROST’S FAVOURITE… STREET FRIES

Let’s be honest, whilst we love donning the glad rags and heading for a sit down meal, there’s also something completely delicious and satisfying about rustic, hearty street grub. Enter, Poptata.

What started as a selection of street food trucks, Poptata is now making roots in four London foodie hotspots. It offers a feast of fancy fries and zingy cocktails to wash down the carbs.

The menu is split into three sections (Classic, Cheesy and Loaded) and both fries and toppings can be made vegetarian or vegan.  You can custo  mise your order too with a huge variety of dips including curry ketchup, caramelised onion & mustard and smoky BBQ. Swoon.

Looking for the fanciest on the menu? Check out these gorgeous options below:

Lucifer Fries – garlic, rosemary and thyme dusted fries, cheddar & Red Leicester, hot shot sauce (£4) Tex Pulled Pork Fries – pulled pork, sour cream, smoky BBQ, spring onions, cheddar (£7.95)
Guaca Fries – smashed avocado, grilled halloumi, red roasted pepper sauce (£7.95)

You can find Poptata at Boxpark (both Shoreditch and Croydon), Portobello Road and Tooting Market.

PATERNOSTER CHOP HOUSE: MEAT, MOOD-LIGHTING AND THE MOST DELICIOUS CHEESY MASHED POTATOES

Paternoster Chop House, perhaps now more commonly known as Channel 4’s First Dates set, is one to add to your London foodie list. The minute you head into Paternoster Square, which is a stone’s throw from St Paul’s Cathedral, you notice the restaurant thanks to its vibrant atmosphere and of course, that First Dates sofa in the corner.

There’s a buzz in the restaurant which makes for a perfect, relaxed date night or catch up spot with friends. The iconic semi-circular bar is a magnet for casual after-work drinks but there’s nothing casual about their mixology skills.

The Gin Fizz cocktail, topped with pretty pink petals was refreshing and sweet in equal measure and the Old Fashioned with a twist doesn’t overwhelm in the mouth but instead had a subtle spice lingering on the palate.

Now, onto the best bit, the food. This Great British Chop House prides itself on honouring the times where ‘meat was king, portions were hearty and provenance was everything’. Perfection. To start, we tried the black pudding scotch egg, steak tartare with confit egg yolk and homemade pork pie with piccalilli. The scotch egg had a gorgeously rich, runny yolk and then black pudding casing made for a smoky aftertaste. The highlight was the outer crumb though, which added a salty, crispy texture.

If you’re not feeling like a slab of meat is your choice for dinner, there are plenty of alternatives – lamb chops, pork belly, herb smoked sea trout or a vegan dish leading with grilled Calcot onions and featuring dumplings, puy lentils and artichokes.

We, naturally, did go for the big slab of meat and opted for rib eye with red wine gravy. The meat, 300g and 42 day aged, was succulent and melt in the mouth but that was not the hero of this meal. The surprising hero, was the creamed mashed potatoes with Tunworth cheese. Silky to the point of almost runny, this potato is topped with thick slices of Tunworth, a British, camembert-style cheese which adds to the creaminess and provides a salty, thicker texture. We’re going in strong here but they actually were the BEST potatoes we’ve had. Fact.

Dessert was also a big hit and no matter which way your sweet tooth takes you, PCH has you covered. From a warmed, dense carrot cake, topped with cream cheese, candied carrot batons through to a rich, decadent sticky toffee pudding and chocolate truffles. Whatever you choose, we’re confident it will end your experience perfectly.

Prices at Paternoster are as you’d expect for a central London hotspot and steaks range from £22 (flat iron) through to £35 (fillet). For drinks, you’re looking at between £9.50 (white chocolate fizz) and £16 (Dirty Tea Time) and you can get a bottle of white wine for £30 (Novas, 2016).

To book, visit The Paternoster Chop House website. Want an insider tip? Ask for the table with the view of St Paul’s dome… a stunning backdrop for a stunning evening!

ROYAL CHINA – RESTAURANT REVIEW

Who wants some world famous Chinese food? Us, obviously. We took a trip to Baker Street’s Royal China restaurant and experienced huge flavours from its Cantonese menu with some superb service to boot.

Renowned for its Dim Sum and Hong Kong style dishes, alongside seasonal menus, the restaurant has something for any Chinese food lover.

The Baker Street branch is considered to be the Group’s flagship (of its six restaurants in London from Queensway to Harrow on The Hill) and when you walk into the atmospheric dining hall which can hold 250 people, you immediately see why!

Head chef Pak Kuen Ng is somewhat of a celebrity in the biz. Growing up in Hong Kong, his own experiences influencer the flavours. Our favourite dishes on the day included the Honey Roast Pork Puffs, deep fried stuffed crab claw, roast duck Cantonese style and ‘Royal China’ Lotus Leaf Rice. OK, we know that’s a lot on the favourites list but trust us on this one, the flavours are on point!

If you are drawn towards the Dim Sum, you’re in luck – there’s a new menu launching this month which will be served daily from noon through to 5.30pm. A huge mix of Cheung Fung, dumplings, buns and meat pots, all ranging from £3.90 to £6.60 a dish, it’s a budget friendly way to trial the lot however the Black Gold Yolk Lava Buns are eying us up…

You won’t be going thirsty here either, with over 40 different teas to choose from and over 100 wine bins, there’s a tipple to compliment each dish.
