And They’re Off! The Olympics 2012 Starts

Starting from today, London is the most exciting place in the world. The Olympics has started and Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle’s opening ceremony is underway.

Evoking Britain’s green and pleasant land, choirs sang the national anthems of each country in the United Kingdom with their respective flowers which were: Danny Boy, Flower of Scotland, Bread of Heaven and England’s rose, Scotland’s thistle, Wales’ daffodil and Northern Ireland’s flax. There was even 70 sheep, 12 horses, 10 chickens and nine geese.

Then the set was stage as a volunteer cast of two and a half thousand people acted out the Industrial revolution. The cast are dressed like peasants and rich men from another era gave the audience a history lesson to the rousing beat of the drums. The theme of the opening ceremony is the Isles of Wonder, inspired by William Shakespeare’s play The Tempest. Mark Rylance had to drop out of the main part performing a monologue from The Tempest as his step-daughter died. Our heart goes out to him.

Direct descendants from the suffragette movement also took to the stage. Then there was a moment of silence for all of those who have sacrificed their life for their country. The epic opening ceremony cost £27 million

Then there was a splash of colour for the 60’s. 60,000 people inside the stadium watched the spectacle and another 4 billion watched on TV.

Molten Olympic rings were forged by craftsmen and then rose from the ground, creating an amazing spectacle. An emotional moment. The Olympic rings represent the five continents.

Then Daniel Craig as James Bond went to Buckingham Palace to get the Queen (yes, that one) with the corgis snapping at his heels. A helicopter ride later across London’s landmarks lead to The Queen and James Bond parachuting from a helicopter.

The Union Jack was then carried in by servicemen from the RAF, Army and the Navy.

Then the NHS and achievements of children’s books were represented while Mike Oldfields played ‘Tubular Bells’. This included Peter Pan and JK Rowling was there. NHS was then displayed in lights. Kids jumped on beds while nurses danced. Then children’s nightmares were represented by Lord Voldemort, Cruella De Vil and child snatcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Then a few Mary Poppins were dancing on stage and the nightmares were chased away. 10,000 people have taken part in the Opening Ceremony in total. The audience roared as the homage to the NHS ended. All of the nurses and doctors were real NHS workers! They all rehearsed for 350 hours.

Then Rowan Atkinson (as Mr Bean) played along while the National Symphony Orchestra during Chariots of Fire. Then scene from the film were played with Mr Bean cut into them. Very funny.

Then a typical British household was represented along with British TV shows and music from the past. Gregory’s Girl, Charlie Chaplin, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who and David Bowie were all represented. Every audience member was taken through their childhood.

The Sex Pistols, texting, Soul II Soul and The Eurythmics played as the dancers rocked out and an actor and actress texted each other and then kissed. Famous kisses were then played in the background. Including that of Kate Middleton and Prince William. The journey of music and dance was told from the 60’s to the present day. Danny Boyle even got Trainspotting, the film that made him famous, in.

Then East London’s Dizze Rascal took to the stage. Dizzie was a good choice and then Amy Winehouse played. A homage to the singer who died last year.

The inventor of the internet Sir Tim Berners-Lee appeared and was paid homage to as everyone cheered. David Beckham, East London boy, brought the torch to the Olympic Stadium.

There was a minute silence for those who have passed away and then Emile Sande then sang Abide By Me. The dancers were amazing and there were some brilliant Tai Chi moves.

Then the athletes arrived. The athletes from each country arrived at the stadium carrying their flag as their country was called out.

The opening ceremony was full of British in-jokes and fantastic performances. Frost Magazine are proud to be British and will constantly be blogging about the Olympics. Let us know your opinions and thoughts.

How to Skateboard.

Skate Tricks: (D-Street)

Whether you used to know your way around a skateboard in the hazy days of your youth, but time has eroded your skills – or you’re completely new to skating and want to ‘get on board’ with the hot new trend – then here are some top tips on how to perform a few simple tricks.

Joe Habgood, rider for stylish new skateboard brand D-Street, said: “An Acid Drop is a great trick to start with. It’s the simple act of riding off something and free falling to the ground, which is really easy to master and will give you that cool factor in an instant.”

Acid Drop:

Step 1: Position your feet over the bolts of the board and start skating at a speed you’re comfortable with.

Step 2: Roll up to a curb or ledge, keeping the momentum going.

Step 3: Roll over the edge and ride off smiling!

Joe said: “Once you’ve mastered that you can move on to more advanced tricks such as the Hippy Jump – a trick where the rider jumps over a bar, whilst the board goes under the bar or obstacle.”

Hippy Jump

Step 1: Find a small obstacle such as a bench or a bar.

Step 2: Place feet over the bolts and ride towards the object with enough speed to clear the obstacle.

Step 3: When you’re nearing the obstacle, bend your legs and crouch down a little, then jump over the obstacle. The board should continue along the ground.

Step 4: Land on the board on the other side of the obstacle with your feet on the bolts and bend your legs a little to absorb the impact.

The 360

Step 1: In a stationary position turn your shoulders in the opposite direction the way you want to spin as if winding up a spinning top.

Step 2: Now spin your shoulders (and arms, for balance) back into the direction you actually want to spin and lift the front wheels off the ground.

Step 3: Your board and legs will follow the twist of your body and you’ll pivot around on the back wheels.

Step 4: Spin as many times around as you see fit before putting your front wheels back down. 360, 540, 720 degrees – spin until dizzy.

Beercan slalom.

Step 1: Gather fellow skateboard enthusiasts.

Step 2: Distribute cans of beer, lager or cider. Hell, even those ready-mixed Pimms or G+Ts.

Step 3: Empty cans in a suitable fashion.

Step 4: Position cans equally spaced in a line. About 5 feet apart should do it.

Step 5: Ride skateboard towards cans and weave through the gaps without knocking any over.

Urban Dictionary of Skate Lingo

“Air” means riding with all four wheels in the air.
“Set” means a set of stairs.
“Kinked” means a rail with bumps in it.

TV STAR CRISSY ROCK’S JOY AS SHE SHOWS OFF “ROLLS ROYCE OF TEETH”

Comedian Crissy Rock is proudly showing off her new set of “Rolls Royce teeth” after enduring years of agony and embarrassment.

Crissy, who is also one of the stars of the hit TV show Benidorm, saw her teeth destroyed after she took chemotherapy-based drugs for vulval cancer in 2003.

Her teeth crumbled causing her to have all of them removed and she went on to have dentures fitted while living in Spain during the filming of Benidorm.

She said: “I spent £10,000 having dentures fitted with a Spanish dentist, but the result was devastating. When I saw my teeth I cried. They looked like something out of a joke shop. It was a real botch job that left me looking like Hannibal Lecter.”

Crissy resolved to get her teeth looked at again after appearing on ITV’s I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here last year during which she had to remove her dentures as she prepared to jump out of a helicopter.

Now, after four months of treatment with the UK’s leading denturist Barrie Semp, of The Smile Centre in Manchester, Crissy is proudly showing off what she has dubbed the “Rolls Royce of teeth” which cost £20,000 to fit.

Crissy said: “My teeth have been individually handmade and tweaked to look a bit worn and slightly crooked to appear more natural. Even the gum looks real.

“For years I couldn’t bite into an apple and had to check restaurant menus for things I could eat. These new teeth are rock solid and I can eat whatever I want. They have given me my dignity back as well as a nicer smile.

“They have already made a huge difference, not just to my mouth but to my life.”

Barrie Semp said: “The problem with Crissy’s teeth was that she had them fitted abroad and there was no aftercare. Also the dentistry work she had done was very poor and had completely failed. It was a total mess.

“Each new tooth has been handcrafted with faint cracks and blemishes where necessary to make them look very real. The gum work is also hand-stained to blend in with the patient’s gum colour, so it looks as if the patient’s natural teeth are growing from the natural gum.

“Crissy can eat anything she likes now and can even jump out of a helicopter without having to take her teeth out.”

Can’t Sleep? What’s Keeping You Up?

Can’t sleep? What’s keeping us Brits awake at night?

Recent research has revealed the NHS is spending £50million a year on drugs to help combat insomnia. We take a look at what could be the cause of the nation’s unrest and what we you can do to help nod off naturally.

· The Reason: Restless legs

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) can vary in severity and causes an irresistible inclination to move your legs. RLS can cause discomfort in the feet, calves and thighs and in many cases, the condition can be distressing and disruptive and effect daily activities including sleep.

Acupuncturist Rachel Peckham notes: “Over 50% of people in the UK suffer with sleep disorders of some kind, generally attributed to a stressful lifestyle, RLS is a common problem. Traditional Acupuncture is known to be enormously beneficial for helping correct sleep problems. Most people find treatment wonderfully relaxing, as acupuncture is known to calm the nervous system and also affect hormonal outputs by increasing endorphin production.”

Try it: To find a practitioner in your area call the British Acupuncture Council on 020 8735 0400 or visit www.acupuncture.org.uk

· The Reason: Stress

“Stress is a collection of physiological, cognitive, affective and behavioural symptoms that are caused by difficult situations in our daily life. It can affect each individual in different ways ranging from less severe symptoms such as headaches all the way up to depression and anxiety.” Comments Dr David Edwards’, “exercise and a healthy diet are crucial to maintaining a relaxed mind and body. I would also recommend some of my patients take Rhodiola rosea as a short term option when suffering stressful periods. Taking 200mg, twice a day could help to control the release of stress hormones whilst helping to improve energy and concentration levels, which can help reduce symptoms of stress.” Rhodiola rosea is an ‘adaptogen’ – a substance of natural plant origin that is able to increase the body’s resistance to stress and normalise imbalances with minimal side effects.

Try it: Vitano® contains Rhodiola rosea root extract 200mg and is available from Boots, leading pharmacies and health-food stores priced at £13.27 for 30 tablets. Always read the label. For further information visit www.vitano.co.uk.

· The Reason: Caffeine

Drinking tea and coffee throughout the day can have a negative impact when it comes to bed time. Cutting down on caffeine by reducing the amount of tea/coffee/fizzy drinks really can make it easier to nod off, if you find it hard to get through the day without your caffeine hit try reducing the number of caffeine laden drinks and cut back on all caffeine after 3pm. Expert Nutritionist Kirsten Brooks notes “Camomile is a wonderful herb with sedative properties, helping us to relax and encourage sleep. As a warm drink, it’s a great way to unwind in the evening.”

Try it: Heath and Heather’s Camomile infusion has been finely crafted using the highest quality Camomile, perfect for relaxation and unwinding, this gentle and soothing infusion could also help to reduce feelings of stress and anxiety.

. Naturally caffeine-free

. 100% Natural

. Available in packs of 20 & 50

. RRP from £1.49 & £2.89

· The Reason: Hot Flushes

It is estimated that 8 out of 10 women in the UK experience symptoms leading up to the menopause and of these, 45% find their symptoms difficult to deal with. Symptoms can be wide ranging from insomnia and anxiety to hot flushes and night sweats impacting lifestyle and relationships.

Kathy Abernethy, Chair of the UK Menopause Nurse Group and a member of the Medical Advisory Council of the British Menopause Society comments: “After years working in a busy NHS menopause clinic, advising women in consultation as well as running education programmes for nurses, I understand how the menopause affects women not only physically but also psychologically. I often give women lifestyle and diet advice and try to encourage women to look positively at this time of change and to take steps to ensure good health.”

Details of a new study in the Journal of Gynaecological Endocrinology note how red clover supplementation can provide a natural alternative to help reduce hot flushes.

Try it: Promensil Double Strength (80mg) dietary supplements have been specifically developed to help women manage symptoms of the menopause naturally and effectively without resorting to HRT. Promensil Double Strength has been proved to reduce hot flushes and night sweats by 75%. Available from Boots, Ocado, good independent chemists and health food shops. Visit www.promensil.co.uk for further information or call 01903 280 860.

· The Reason: Nocturnal Cramps

Nocturnal muscle cramp could well be the new snoring, causing distress and sleep disruption to more than 13 million people in the UK. 82 per cent of women have suffered with the complaint, with 12 per cent experiencing nocturnal cramps every night. It is an extremely painful and distressing condition with many people suffering in silence. Insomnia specialist and founder of the Sleep School, Dr Guy Meadows said: “Quality sleep is essential to ensure you feel regenerated and ready for the day ahead. Interruptions caused by emotional or health problems can be very detrimental to everyday life, making it harder to concentrate at work and affecting relationships. Frustration and anxiety about disturbed sleep can cause it to become even worse.

“People often aren’t aware that they could be suffering from a sleep condition that is easy to treat. Instead of worrying about the problem, it is important to trust your body’s ability to sleep, making lifestyle changes or taking appropriate treatments where appropriate.”

Try it: Crampex is the only product available without prescription for the prevention and treatment of night cramps and it doesn’t have any of the side effects associated with taking Quinine (which is regularly prescribed). Crampex costs from £4.29 for a pack of 24 tablets and is available over the counter from pharmacies. More tips and advice can be found on www.goodsleepadvice.com and the Good Night Guide consumer leaflet is also available on request.

· The Reason: Bloating

Much like the rest of your body, your digestive system needs time to rest. Going to bed and getting up at set(ish) hours each day can help our digestive system work more effectively and improve the regularity of our bowel movements. Waste material in the colon impairs our ability to absorb vitamins and minerals which can affect prevent the immune system from working at its optimum level.

Try it: Sun Chlorella® ‘A’ is a natural green algae whole food supplement from Japan – an excellent choice for bloating as it contains a staggering range of nutrients including around 10% fibre, to help move food through the system more effectively. Nutritionist and Natural Health expert Nadia Brydon explains “Sun Chlorella ‘A’ acts as an ‘intestinal broom’, cleansing the bowel by clinging on to toxins like mercury, lead or pesticides in your intestines and then eliminating them as waste.

Sun Chlorella is priced £21.95 for 300 tablets (a 20-30 day supply) and is available from www.SunChlorella.co.uk, free phone 0800 008 6166, www.victoriahealth.com, www.NutriCentre.com, www.bodykind.com, Revital stores, www.revital.co.uk and good health stores.

· The Reason: Not tired enough

If you haven’t burned enough energy throughout the day, it’s likely that you’ll find bedtime a struggle when it comes to nodding off, Justin Way, Personal Trainer from Pure Gym explains “There are a million ways you can give yourself a workout at home without spending a penny on expensive equipment. When hoovering standing on your left leg whilst pushing and pulling the hoover around with your right arm. Hop to move around the room and alternate legs every 2 mins. This will work the core massively whilst bringing great tone to the legs and bum.”

Try it: Pure Gym’s 24-hour, no contract membership starts from £17.99 a month. For more information, visit www.puregym.com

A New Breed of Sport: It’s Time for the Rise of the Mind Sport; A Personal Journey into E-Sports

I have always enjoyed almost any sport but there is one series of sports which has always been woefully underrepresented. I’m talking about mind sports, sports which involve a battle of human intelligence. For every mind sport there have always been hundreds of other physical sports. Don’t get me wrong I love many ‘physical’ sports and they also showcase moments of exceptional human intelligence and creativity. But they aren’t the same as a pure battle of wits, one mind versus another. I believe this is a travesty since the brain is humans must incredible attribute.

The mind sports which do exist tend to be terrible spectator sports. Chess, the obvious candidate, is too slow and not great to watch. Others have similar problems. The revolution in mind sports began with the popularity of TV poker. It has great drama, and bluffs of course. TV poker has been very successful but it can be a bit repetitive. Its other major problem is that no matter how skilled a player is he can still lose through bad luck. This detracts from the idea of a great battle of minds. The initial boom in poker viewing figures has subsided

However there was one mind sport I stumbled upon which has had a bigger impact on me than any other sport. I’m talking about the e-sport Starcraft: Brood War. Starcraft is a real-time computer strategy game usually though not exclusively played between two players. The game is extremely dynamic because each player plays as one of three almost perfectly balanced but very different races. Every player plays one of either the human like Terrans, the insectoid alien and all-consuming Zerg or the psionic alien Protoss. A player will always play as the same race in all his matches as it would be too difficult to master another race.

Despite being produced by American company Blizzard entertainment the game has gained most popularity in South Korea and it is here where the game first became a sport. The game is extremely difficult to play. Most professional players will average over 300 actions per minute (clicking the mouse and pressing the keyboard). And that doesn’t include watching the screen, mini-map and planning strategies.

In my opinion it is by far the greatest mind sport to ever exist. It is the best sport I have ever played or watched. Nothing can match it for drama or tension. It has all the elements which make a great sport. Unlike other mind sports it’s very easy for an audience to follow a match. It has dramatic moments which can completely turn a game. Because of its difficulty it is extremely intense, the game takes phenomenal concentration and skill and a single moment of error can lose a game. No other sport pushes the human brain to such an extent and as in all great sports the very best players can do things no one else can.

I first stumbled upon e-sports in 2008 after playing a few games of Starcraft with a friend. I used to play a lot of poker and that is how I discovered e-sports. A lot of former pro starcraft players like ‘Elki’ Bertrand_Grospellier moved over to poker. Here is the first game I ever watched with English commentary (a rarity back then)

Since then I have been completely hooked. The game never tires thanks to the stream of new maps which come out every season. Despite many hundreds of games I am still terrible at playing the game (max rank D+ on ICCup) but I don’t really care since that just makes winning a game that much more satisfying. The best part of watching Starcraft is when a player invents something truly innovative which know one has seen or done before. I love both playing and watching the game.

I believe e-sports will be huge in the future. To some extent they already are. The recent IPL tournament in April had 3 million unique viewers over 3 days. The sport is now starting to spread much more widely outside South Korea thanks to the release of Starcraft II. At the moment the world is not quite ready to except it. The cultural attitude towards video games is still negative, although this is changing. The majority of the population still do not even play video games let alone watch them.

Probably the greatest challenge that any e-sport faces is that they are subject to changing technology in a way that other sports aren’t. Starcraft: Brood War is an example of this. The game is now over 10 years old and people new to the sport question the graphics of the game. Moreover the next instalment of the game, Starcraft II, has now been released and many viewers and progamers have now switched over to the newer version. That said e-sports are only going to get bigger and I can’t wait. Mind sports are finally here to stay.
