the look of love filmIn an astonishingly versatile career that has lasted nearly two decades, British filmmaker Michael

Winterbottom has turned his hand to an astonishing amount of challenging and diverse output.

His work has strayed from fiction to factual, between comedy and drama and from light froth

to storms of controversy. His new film marks the fourth collaboration with comedian Steve

Coogan, their most notable so far being 24 Hour Party People, an excellent account of the

Manchester music scene of the late 70’s and early 80’s. Their subject matter this time around

is Paul Raymond, ‘The King Of Soho’, a notorious figure of the British media who starting in

the late 50’s built an empire from his ‘gentleman’s clubs’, pornography publications and real

estate properties to become the richest man in Britain, broke many taboos of the post-war era and

led an extravagant lifestyle both in and out of the public spotlight. Such a divisive and colorful

character seems almost tailor made for a tell all, illuminating biopic; a modern day King Midas

story. Citizen Kane by way of Boogie Nights if you will.

 

 

Soho, 1958: Paul Raymond (Coogan) along with his wife Jean (Anna Friel) open their

first ‘gentlemen’s club’ which allow it’s patrons access to displays of sexuality previously

unavailable due to British law. As the years pass, Raymond invests in multiple properties and

starts his own magazine publications which quickly make him one of the country’s wealthiest

men. However his rise to the top is littered with adversity and tragedy shown through the prism

of the other two key women in his life; Fiona Richmond (Tamsin Egerton), cover girl and

journalist for his Men Only Magazine and Debbie Raymond (Imogen Poots), his utterly devoted

and loving daughter who was destined to take over his empire.

 

 

Raymond’s excessive and colorful lifestyle was no secret to the public at large; he had an

uncanny knowledge of PR and treated his name like a brand. The Look Of Love certainly

succeeds at portraying this lavish and sordid empire in terrific detail. Costume and set designs

are beautifully rendered across the decades that the story spans and it’s quite remarkable that

with a fairly modest budget at the filmmakers disposal, the streets are Soho are convincingly

transformed to their period look. Cinematographer Hubert Taczanowski conjures up a stunning

look for the film. The early 50’s set monochrome sequences morph into a lurid, enticing color

scheme that practically drips off the screen and replicates the grainy film stock feel of the era

that thankfully doesn’t feel forced although a number of flashy edits and montage sequences feel

a tad overdone. Unfortunately it’s in discussing the brilliant visual aesthetic of the film that you

can’t help but notice it coming up shorthand in the emotional department.

 

 

Raymond’s life was not without it’s moments of heartbreak and tragedy and the film doesn’t

shy away from them. The problem is that for the majority of its running time it assumes the

veil of a bawdy, knockabout comedy breezing through the darker and more dubious aspects

of Raymond’s career without much time to absorb the morality or the lack of it. A scene

where he faces allegations that one of his clubs is being operated as a brothel is quite literally

blink and you miss it, as though the filmmakers are worried that you may start to dislike

this man. Montages whip past in a blur stopping to name drop many important events and

accomplishments of Raymond’s eventful life yet we rarely get any heft or scope of these events.

At it’s worst it almost resembles a live action Wikipedia biography page. It’s understandable that

the filmmakers would want to market the film to the widest possible audience by keeping the

appeal broad and the laughs coming. It’s certainly not without it’s funny moments and they are

their best when dark and scathing. The sight of Raymond giving his daughter a line of cocaine

to help her through labour elicits gasps and guffaws in equal measure. Yet the film revels in it’s

comic background to a sometimes overbearing degree. Cameos from the likes of Stephen Fry,

Dara O’Briain David Walliams and Matt Lucas (in a an uncanny portrayal of John Water’s

muse Divine) are distracting and many of them far too fleeting to have any major impact on the

narrative.

 

 

Then there is Coogan himself in the central role of Raymond. Coogan is an undeniable talent

and it can be a pleasure to see comedic actors broaden their range with more straight faced

fare. However as talented a performer as he is Coogan feels miscast in the role. One of the

key problems is that the spectre of his most famous creation, appalling self centred Norfolk

based DJ Alan Partridge, hangs over the performance. Many of Coogan’s mannerisms and

vocal inflections skirt very close to that of Partridge (look out for the scene where he coaches

his dancers through their moves) and it can’t help but pull you further out of the world the

filmmaker’s are clearly working very hard to create. It seems almost churlish to criticise Coogan

for being the gifted comic actor that he is but here the pitch of the performance jars badly, the

character is played so much for laughs that when we step into his darker moments there’s a

distinct lack of empathy. Fortunately many of the supporting performances raise the films game,

most notably from the trio of actresses who play the women of Raymond’s life. Anna Friel is

terrifically steely as Raymond’s first wife; a solid bedrock of support for her husband’s ventures

and she provides one of the genuinely raw moments of drama as their marriage falls apart.

Tamsin Egerton piles on the glamour but is no fool as Raymond’s pin up girlfriend. Imogen

Poots arguably steals the whole thing as Debbie Raymond, pulling off what on paper seems like

a character of contradictions; hedonistic and full of life yet fragile and achingly vulnerable. It’s

the scenes between father and daughter that stick in the mind and hint the most at Raymond’s

softer and more conventional family persona. It’s in these scenes that we perhaps get a clearer

picture of what the film was aiming for before the tone got muddled.

 

 

The Look Of Love is certainly no disaster but given Michael Winterbottom’s terrific range

and style this can’t help but feel incredibly conventional, underwhelming and perhaps only as

substantial as one of its protagonist’s glossy publications. A lot of razzle but not enough dazzle.

 

Decanting The Real Wine Fair 2013

The dust has settled, the broken glass swept up, the spittoons dismantled for another year, the lights switched off and aching limbs and slightly sore heads placed in cold storage. Time to take stock of another Real Wine Fair and recollect the emotion of the occasion in a state of comparative tranquillity.

A time to thank the growers for their huge contribution in coming and showing their wines, for their enthusiasm and spirit and for generating that special friendly atmosphere that big tastings thrive on.

And to thank those who made their way through the claggy rain to Tobacco Dock and have subsequently given us the most positive feedback. And thanks also for your suggestions to make it an even better fair next year.

It was a pleasure to be part of this event.  A couple of people asked me what financial benefit we derive from our investment in the fair. There is rather more (or less) to it than that. The rewards are not commercial; their real value is far more profound:

*The pleasure in seeing old friends

*The pleasure in making new ones

*Bringing likeminded people together

*Conveying that wine is not all about profit and for narrow purpose but has an identity, a history and cultural distinctiveness and personal foundation.

The Real Wine Fair strikes no didactic agenda despite what some commentators might write. The fair exists to bring the growers to the people and allow the public and the trade to experience wines that they might not normally taste or even know about. A fair is sometimes just that, a festival or celebration of the good things in life, a whirl of human interactions rather than a succession of cold financial transactions.  If everyone feels positive then we’ve done our job and that is reward enough.

The Venue – Tobacco Dock, Wapping, E1

Tobacco Dock, a Grade One listed warehouse, was smokin’ hot, a superb venue. The Great Gallery was the perfect exhibition space, light (despite the gloomy weather), airy, with sufficient room comfortably to accommodate over 100 growers and many hundreds of visitors at a time. There was a separate room for the food, a big restaurant which doubled as a wine bar and rooms dedicated to seminars.

The Partners

Real Wine 2013 was the collective enterprise of Les Caves de Pyrène, Indigo Wine, Passione Vino, Roberson, Ethical Edibles, Tutto Wines and Modern Portuguese and their many growers and we were also honoured to host a terrific contingent of Georgian winemakers.

The Growers

It is invidious to single out growers, so a few extra honourable mentions. It was good to see the South West growers back en bloc – Luc, Pascal, Ludo & Jean-Bernard lent their usual cheery demeanours to the occasion. Spain was particularly well represented with great growers from lesser-known regions such as Alicante, Manchuela and Tenerife. The Georgians brought a variety of superb, exciting and unusual wines from their homeland. Artisans from Italy were exceptionally well-represented – they came from Piedmont, Lombardy, Friuli, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna and Sicily – amongst others – bearing a bewildering array of indigenous grapes and styles. This was, to coin a phrase, the real Italy, a far cry from milquetoast Pinot Grigio and over-sulphured Trebbiano. We had a fine sprinkling from Australia, South Africa, Chile and New Zealand – wine made from wild vines, in old tinajas or concrete eggs, with skin contact and sans soufre. The old new world or the new new world? Only time will tell. The Real Wine Fair may be viewed as putting a girdle around the world; this is the new small-scale globalism, connecting the dots, those dots being small growers working in a unique idiom, not necessarily recognised or honoured by their own local critics or peers, but working in an intelligent and prescient fashion to become the most eloquent advocates for the terroir of their own vineyards.

Adrian Lowcock, Senior Investment Manager at Hargreaves Lansdown, looks at how investors have fared over the last 10 years.

 

In the last 10 years the FTSE 100 has risen 3,074 points or 93% since the low of March 2003, although it remains a little way off the high point of 6,732 reached on 15th June 2007.  Whilst the market has risen over the last 10 years there have been some big winners and losers during that time.  The Banking sector has been the worst performer over the last 10 years and the only sector to post a negative capital return with the FTSE All-share/banks returning -20%. The Technology sector posted the best performance with the FTSE All-share/Technology returning 369%, recovering from the lows seen in the years following the Dotcom bubble.

“The technology sectors strong performance over the last 10 years highlights the contrarian nature of the stock market.  However, it is difficult for any investor to go against the trend and take such risks. Recommendations

 

Schroder UK Alpha Plus – Richard Buxton takes a long term view and is able to spot some opportunities before others – a distinguishing feature of all great investors.  Having the conviction to back them is equally important and Richard holds only 30-40 companies in his fund which means each idea has a significant effect on performance. You will never see his portfolio padded out with mediocre holdings just to make up the numbers. This fund has the potential to deliver superb returns, in a variety of economic conditions.

 

JO Hambro UK Equity Income – The managers believe the UK economy is performing better than most commentators expect. The fund continues to have a bias towards more economically-sensitive companies and has performed well recently as a result.

 

Haizhen Wang | London Fashion Week 2013

The debut collection from last year’s Fashion Fringe winner saw eye shades, leather, slimline trousers, full-length cloaks and peplum jackets. Haizhen Wang had an air of futuristic Gothic surrounding his collection. The show was attended by so many people that Frost was ushered into a screening to watch it instead, (hence the photos) it was like a little fashion cinema as Terri, Keshini and I watched the collection. We loved it: A true talent that is set for big things.

Frost went along to the amazing restaurant Mari Vanna to celebrate the opening of the Maslenitsa Festival, Russia’s cultural welcome to spring and celebration of pancakes. We greatly enjoyed the canapes and the drinks, including vodka infused strawberry juice. We enjoyed the presentation and talks about the up-coming Russian festival and were told to ‘drink in moderation’ by Boris Johnson. All in all, we had a great time and will be popping down to the Russian Festival. See you there.

 

The Russian Week in London, Festival Maslenitsa

Zdravstvuj! (Hello!) What better way to welcome spring and banish winter than Maslenitsa, the Russian Sun
Festival. This Shrovetide feast before Lent is celebrated the world over with traditional Russian arts and
culture events and, of course, delicious Russian cuisine – including the iconic and delectable blini (pancake).

Organised by Ensemble Productions, London’s Maslenitsa festival has the backing of the Mayor of London
and Natalia Vodianova’s Naked Heart Foundation as official charity partner, and is the largest Russian
celebration of culture, art, music and food outside of Russia. The free event returns for its fifth year on
Saturday 16 March in Trafalgar Square from 13:30-18:30. Coinciding with Maslenitsa celebrations across
Russia, a live satellite link will allow audiences to share in the authentic festival atmosphere and exchange
cultural dialogue as well as highlight important links between the UK and Russia, with a particular emphasis
on the Olympic years of London 2012 and Sochi 2014.

The popular festival features a variety of activities for all ages including musical performances by Russia’s
leading musical talent, a children’s marquee with songs, competitions and games, and a bustling bazaar
organised by the Russian National Arts and Crafts organisation, with original Russian art, handicrafts and
souvenirs for sale.

Maslenitsa is also known as Pancake Week and there will be plenty of authentic Russian dishes to sample. In
addition to blini there will be other traditional staples such as beef stroganoff and borscht (beetroot soup)
as well as delicacies such as pelmeni (Russian-style pasta).

Maslenitsa 2013 will include, among others, a special visit by Eurovision Contest 2012 stars the Buranovskie
Babushki (Singing Grannies); performances by celebrated folk diva Nadezhda Babkina with her
contemporary take on traditional Russian sounds; young folk group Rodnaya Storonka who cover multiple
genres; the legendary State Academic Ensemble Berezka; the award-winning and innovative Bis-Quit
Quartet; charismatic and much-loved soul Russian artist Petr Nalich accompanied by his band; national
treasure Oleg Gazmanov and one of the most famous Russian rock bands of all time, Smyslovye Galuzinazii.

The festival comes at the culmination of the Russian Maslenitsa Week which includes satellite events across
the city of London. These include the exhibition Treasures of the Royal Courts: Tudors, Stuarts and the
Russian Tsars at the V&A, a culinary evening at Russian restaurant Mari Vanna, a Russia Literary Evening at
Waterstones and a performance by the vivacious Theatre Praktika. This year’s Maslenitsa festival will also see
the first winner of the Maslenitsa Prize for Song and Dance take to stage to entertain the crowds at
Trafalgar Square.

“Due to high interest from the public, the Maslenitsa Festival remains an extremely important cultural event
not just in the UK, but in Europe,” comments Olga Balakleets of Ensemble Productions. “Each year the
festival grows, allowing more and more people to learn about the modern face of Russian culture as well as

About the Naked Heart Foundation

It was the Beslan school siege in 2004 that motivated international model Natalia Vodianova to set up the Naked Heart Foundation. Desperate to do something to help, she had a simple idea – if the young survivors could be distracted by play for at least five minutes each day, it would help them to heal. Providing them with safe outdoor play facilities would redefine their city landscape and act as a form of therapy. The Naked Heart Foundation was set up in the same year, and in 2006 it completed its first play park, five minutes from where Vodianova grew up in Nizhny Novgorod. In 2009, 40 play parks and 30 Russian cities later, Vodianova had fulfilled her dream of giving the children of Beslan their very own Naked Heart play park. To date the charity has built 90 play parks and playgrounds and is now creating a network of family support centres to care for families raising children with disabilities. It also provides funding for dozens of Russian NGOs working in the field and holds an annual international Forum for child development specialists. In 2013 it will open its 100th site. BURANOVSKIE BABUSHKI (SINGING GRANNIES)

Buranovskie Babushki visit The Russian Week in London,

Festival Maslenitsa, 14 & 15 March

Translated as ‘The Grannies from Buranovo’ – or better known to us as the ‘Singing Grannies’ – Buranovskie
Babushki is an ethno-pop band comprising eight elderly, yet sprightly, women. After finishing second in the
2012 Eurovision Song Contest for Russia, the Grannies became an Internet sensation with more than 30,000
hits in less than a week. They will be visiting London in support of the Festival Maslenitsa and will be
attending the British Russian Gala on 15 March at the Royal Courts of Justice as part of the Maslenitsa Week.

The Grannies sing in their native Udmurt, and often surprise audiences by singing covers of Tsoi,
Grebenshchikov and The Beatles. The grannies are currently using their Eurovision money to help rebuild a
local church from their home town Buranovo.

The Affordable Art Fair Returns To Battersea

The Affordable Art Fair returns to the Battersea Evolution building in Battersea Park from 7 – 10 March, and they are giving people a chance to Sleep Now, Buy Later…

– Art lovers given chance to sleep on decision before purchase –

In a consumer shopping first, one lucky visitor to the Affordable Art Fair this month will be given the opportunity to ‘sleep with’ their prospective art purchase in order to make a fresh and considered decision after a good night’s rest.

Fair organisers hope to put more first time buyers at ease with the one off concept which will be trialled with a single lucky winner at the Battersea Park event. The idea came as a result of research* which found that nearly half (47 per cent) of people found it helpful to sleep on a decision when making a purchase for the home.

Over half of Brits (51 per cent) admitted to taking up to 24 hours to make a decision when buying a piece of art.

The public can enter to win the chance to ‘sleep before they buy’ by tweeting the hashtag #sleeponit by no later than midday on Wednesday 6 March.

The lucky winner will be notified on Thursday 7 March and invited to attend the fair on the day of their choosing, select their prospective piece of art to sleep with for the night to allow them some time to relax and consider their chosen work.

To announce the initiative, the Affordable Art Fair has created an original image, inspired by a famous installation shown at the Tate, to demonstrate what the winner will experience.

Nicky Wheeler, Fair Director of the Affordable Art Fair Battersea said “We’ve had so many comments from visitors over the years who have found a piece of art they like but are reluctant to make such an important decision on the spot. Often customers fall in love with a piece at first sight but sometimes thinking time can help in making the right decision – one person will be given this chance at the Affordable Art Fair next week.”

Ming Pin Tien Bye Bye Youth AW13 | London Fashion Week 2013

Taiwanese fashion designer Ming-Pin Tein named his AW13 collection ‘Bye Bye Youth’. He sent the models down the catwalk to Wankelmut’s remix of One day/Reckoning, in knitted beanie hats and oversized white clothes. The clothes were structured, with clean lines. I loved the music, and I loved the clothes. Thumbs up.

Manolo Blahnik at London Fashion Week

One of Frost’s favourite shoe designers collaborated with one of Frost’s favourite hotels for this year’s London Fashion Week. Shoe designer Manolo Blahnik did the London Fashion Week windows at the May Fair Hotel

Inspired by the creative window displays of the world’s leading fashion houses, The May Fair Hotel stepped into London Fashion Week in style with the unveiling of its designer windows.

World-renowned shoe designer Manolo Blahnik CBE has collaborated with the British Fashion Council (BFC) this season to create the exclusive imagery of London Fashion Week campaign for Autumn Winter 2013. To celebrate the May Fair’s partnership with LFW, which is for the 6th year running the Official Hotel partner of London Fashion Week, these illustrations are also fronting the hotel’s façade on Stratton Street. Inspired by the designer’s personal career, this exclusive collection of illustrations represents key industry figures who have been a special influence in Manolo Blahnik’s life and career.

Talking about his collaboration with the May Fair, Manolo Blahnik said: “I’m very excited for my drawings to be featured in the May Fair windows. I have fond memories of the Starlight cinema club in the hotel as I used to go there when I was younger to watch films. I really enjoy going to the May Fair Hotel as it brings back those memories.”
