Christmas Cocktails from The East with Choya Umeshu

If you are looking for something a bit different to add to your Christmas drinks cabinet, why not try Choya Umeshu which is a Japanese fruit liqueur made from the ume fruit, a popular fruit in Japan. It is one of the most well known drinks in Japan and is gaining popularity worldwide.
Choya Umeshu offers a unique tasting experience reflecting Japanese cultures and traditions. With Umeshu’s strong sweet-sour flavour and fruity aromas, there are a number of ways of serving Choya both hot and cold.

I adore the Choya Ume Salut Sparkling Wine. It is like a plummy champagne. Very rich and full of flavour. It’s a joy to drink and brings sparkle to the day.

Top Drinks For Christmas

Christmas is a time for decadence, yet we are entering a golden age for low-alcohol cocktails as more and more bars and restaurants are offering dedicated low-abv options on their drinks menus. Health-conscious consumers are looking for a healthier drinking alternative that still provides a sense of occasion.
Here are three low alcohol serve suggestions which can easily be enjoyed from the comfort of home with friends and family.
Perthyn Lowgroni
Four Welsh Rugby icons, Shane Williams, James Hook, Lee Byrne, and Mike Phillips have united through friendship to launch Perthyn: The Spirit of Belonging. Perthyn takes its name from the Welsh meaning of belonging, Perthyn is a low alcohol spirit, full of flavour. Perthyn is a balance of 12 botanicals resulting in a zesty spirit with notes of citrus, cardamon and thyme.

35ml Perthyn | 25ml Vermouth | 25ml Campari

Add ingredients to a mixing glass with ice. Stir for around 30 seconds and then strain into a fresh rocks glass over cubed ice or one large cube if available. Garnish with orange peel.

RRP £21.95 for 70cl. ABV 10%. Available from the Cardiff Distillery
Cotswolds Dry Gin Essence Raspberry & Elderflower Cooler
Cotswolds Dry Gin Essence is a full strength gin designed to reduce the amount of product and thus alcohol required in a G&T whilst at the same time retaining the intensity of flavour. It is made using ten times the botanical concentration of their award-winning Cotswolds Dry Gin, which is already ten times more botanically intense than most premium gins. The result is a lighter and deliciously refreshing gin, with all the taste and 90% less alcohol than the standard 50 ml serve.
5ml (5 pipettes) Cotswolds Dry Gin Essence | 15ml Elderflower Cordial | 7.5ml Lime Juice (or 2 wedges) | 8 Raspberries | Kombucha or Soda
Muddle raspberries in a rocks glass, add ice and the rest of the ingredients. Top up with kombucha or soda water and stir. Garnish with raspberry and mint leaves.
RRP: £17.95 for 100ml (20 serves). ABV: 46%. Available from Cotswolds Distillery.
Pinkster Spritz
The team behind Pinkster Gin last year launched Pinkster Spritz, a lower alcohol spirit drink in two flavours, Raspberry & Hibiscus and Elderflower & Raspberry.  Made with gin-soaked raspberries left over from producing Pinkster, it is bottled at 24% ABV and is designed to be the ideal base for a light and refreshing spritz. A 50ml Pinkster Spritz measure has no more than 80 calories.

50ml Pinkster Spritz | 50ml Fever-Tree’s Mexican Lime Soda

Add the ingredients to a large wine glass over ice. Garnish with a wedge of fresh lime.

RRP: £28.00 for 70cl. ABV: 24%. Available from Pinkster and Master of Malt.

Frost Loves Sea Change Wines

We love Sea Change wine. They are environmentally-friendly and have an organic range. We tried their Prosecco and it is to-die-for. Get your hands on some now.
Sea Change are passionate about two things: protecting our oceans from plastic pollution and great tasting wine. Every bottle of Sea Change helps fund ocean conservation projects across the globe and our minimal packaging reduces waste and environmental impact.

They have an organic range available, the perfect accompaniment for your cosy fireside evenings or candle-lit dinner dates. Available in a lesser-known red varietal, Bobal (RRP £13.99), and a classic white Chardonnay (RRP, £13.99), the production process of these wines means only naturally occurring sulfites are present. So, every sip is gentler on the head and stomach than regular wine – excellent for a more relaxed evening.

As with all Sea Change Wines, both have minimal packaging, with the unnecessary plastic wrap covering removed from the neck of the bottle, and labels.

For Christmas, Sea Change’s Christmas Day Pack (£35 RRP) has got you sorted. The pack includes a bottle of their fruity, soft Prosecco, zesty Sauvignon Blanc and rich Malbec wines. Whatever your guests choose to drink, Sea Change is suited to everyone’s taste!

Amongst the excitement, Sea Change are committed to giving back this Christmas. With each bottle sold, a donation will be made to marine conservation charities fighting plastic pollution – ideal for those who want to do their bit for the environment.

The Sea Change wine collection is available to buy online at www.seachangewine.com. Free delivery is available for orders over £100.

International Gin & Tonic Day with Boodles Gin

Happy Monday – and Happy International Gin & Tonic Day!!!

Just a reminder that things will get better and if you ever needed an excuse for a Gin & Tonic THIS IS IT.

Not only are we still celebrating London Cocktail Month – albeit in our homes, today is International Gin & Tonic Day and we are celebrating with our quintessentially British Boodles Gin. Our gin edition comes full of gin tips served directly from Mr Boodles the Boodles Gin Butler. So polish your best glassware and get ready for some proper G&T etiquette.

Did you know…

Due to the Gin Craze of the 18th Century, there were 5 acts passed by parliament designed to control the consumption of Gin during this time.

Gin was drunk as a substitute to French Brandy at a time of conflict between England and France which is ironic because Gin originated as a medicinal liquor made by monks in Southern France.

Gin is actually a neutral based spirit gaining its unique flavour through distilling botanicals. The most important being Juniper which gives it it’s fresh pine flavour… It simply cannot be Gin without Juniper. Some of the other key ingredients include Coriander seeds, Citrus Peels and Cinnamon to name just a few. However, Boodles Gin contains No citrus because the original distillers naturally expected the drink to be served with a citrus twist!

Glasses at the ready…

We know everyone has their own special way of concocting their perfect G&T but Boodles have given us some pointers to best enjoy their Brilliant British Gin. We know it’s Gin&Tonic day but I must comment on how versatile Boodles Gin really is. We already know how much care has gone into making their unique gin and their thought out blend of botanicals is designed to stay subtle and not smack you round the face. Perfect for many a cocktail as well as a G&T straight up! Whats more, Boodles have three stunning gins to suit your mood. Boodles Original London Dry, Boodles Rhubarb and Strawberry and just in time for winter, Boodles Mulberry.

So with that in mind, Mr Boodles requests that you take pleasure in making your G&T and exercise as much labour and patience as is used to craft their Brilliant British Gin. Don’t rush because all good things come to those who wait.

Mr Boodles suggests quality gin deserves quality tonic; Boodles recommends Fevertree as the most complementary.

Ice First, then gin, then tonic.

Keep it icy… the Co2 of the tonic is harder to escape if you keep it chilled.

Pour Slowly… the slower you pour your tonic the more balanced the flavour

Garnish well.

To give you an idea we’ve included some of Boodles signature serves below to whet your whistle

Tiki Lovers Pineapple Rum – Infused with Pineapple Extract – a new Rum experience

This is a fantastic rum, perfect for Christmas.

Our Tiki Lover’s Pineapple Rum from The Bitter Truth is a rum blend infused with an all-natural, pineapple extract from South America which is allowed to rest for several weeks.  This gives the flavours of sugar cane time to mingle elegantly with fruity layers of juicy pineapple, while maintaining the full and complex aromas of the rum blend. Made using a careful blend of aged and unaged Jamaican pot-still rum, 3-year-old Barbados rum, aged in former Bourbon Whiskey barrels and some young column-still rums from Trinidad and Guyana.

This new rum is bold, vibrant and taste-rich with both the rum and pineapple characteristics being given space to shine.

The Serve: Brilliant in all tropical drinks and tiki cocktails.

Brut Zéro from Bouvet Ladubay

We were very impressed with this wine and we are very fussy indeed. It is a delicious and fun bubbly. It’s a limited edition sparkling dry wine from Bouvet Ladubay and the first time it has been available in the UK. It’s currently available at Lay & Wheeler.

As the name suggests, this cuvée has no dosage, and so has not a drop of residual sugar. As a result, the wine expresses abundant freshness and minerality, supported by bright citrus and green fruit.

Dark ‘n Stormy Ready-to-Go Cocktail Can – The Perfect Stocking Filler

Goslings Rum Dark ‘n Stormy ready-to-drink cocktail

Cocktails in a can usually taste artificial or just not nice. Not so this Dark ‘n Stormy. It tastes amazing. Just as good as the same cocktail made in a bar or at home.

When you need a convenient, highly refreshing drink that can quickly hit the spot, wherever the parties at, what better than our brand new Goslings Rum Dark ‘n Stormy ready-to-drink cocktail in a can that has just launched in Waitrose!

The iconic Dark ‘n Stormy is Bermuda’s national drink and a trademarked cocktail, which mandates the use of Goslings Black Seal Rum. The name is said to have originated when an old salt observed that the rum floating on top of the ginger beer was the “colour of a cloud only a fool or a dead man would sail under.”

A true taste of Bermuda – the Dark ‘n Stormy ready-to-drink can is made using Goslings Black Seal Rum and Goslings Stormy Ginger Beer with no mixing and no ice required.

The Grid is an immersive, multi-room alcoholic escape experience where patrons get to go undercover an Artificial Intelligence firm in an attempt to learn and defeat the “system”

The tech-driven escape experience challenges guests to puzzles across a series of rooms, with the bar as a backdrop.

On the day of the experience, they arrive undercover at the AI corp’s (neosight.org) HQ, where they must move between different rooms, interacting with the Artificial Intelligence and Neosight specialist technology as they try to stop the corp from crunching human data for the “greater good”. The 1.5 hour experience is full of surprises, bespoke tech and futurists tonics (sci-fi cocktails).

“I believe the future of hospitality is all about having fun. Fun now lies in experiences and not only food and drink. This is our first multi-room experience and I am very excited for it,” said Sebastian Lyall, Founder of Lollipop, the immersive experience group behind The Grid.

Lollipop is an immersive lifestyle group known for its experiential creations both here and abroad, including ABQ (abqlondon.com), The Bletchley (thebletchley.co.uk) and The Bunyadi (thebunyadi.com).
