CANNES 2012 PREVIEW


The most prestigious and coveted film festival on the planet is upon us as filmmakers, stars and journalists descend on the southern French seaside resort to view and critique some of the most anticipated films of the year. Of course I cannot be going myself; the rigour of the festival is said to drive even the most dedicated of film journalists to the edge let alone a beginner. But I can definitely cast my eye over the selection and pick ten of them that have caught my and other cinefiles eyes. Some of these have confirmed UK release dates, others do not. Either way the calibre of these titles should see them generating plenty of buzz before their arrival on these shores.

MOONRISE KINGDOM

The seventh feature from the king of idiosyncratic American indie cinema Wes Anderson is a period piece set in the mid sixties following two runaway teenagers in love and the haphazard search party that sets out after them. Anderson stalwarts Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman are joined by newcomers Bruce Willis, Edward Norton and Frances McDormand to name a few. Anderson’s exceptionally detailed, designed and witty directorial style may not be to all tastes but for fans of his work this is set to tick all the boxes.

LOVE

Austrian master of discomfort Michael Haneke returns to France for a tale of a couple who must care for the wife’s elderly parents. French acting legend Isabelle Huppert appears alongside William Shimmel of the magnificent Certified Copy in what would appear to be a more gentle approach for Haneke. Those familiar with his work however, will be prepared for terrible things to happen.

KILLING THEM SOFTLY

The Assassination of Jesse James was one of the most criminally underrated films of recent years so hopes are high for director Andrew Dominik and star Brad Pitt’s reunion in this gritty crime thriller about an underworld investigation into a card game heist co starring Sam Shepard, Richard Jenkins, James Gandolfini and Ray Liotta. Pitt appeared in last year’s big Cannes winner The Tree Of Life. Can he make it two in a row?

COSMOPOLIS

Robert Pattinson has the hearts of millions of Twilight fans and now we find out if he can win critical acclaim in Canadian maestro David Cronenberg’s twisted thriller about a young elitist yuppie travelling across New York City for a designer haircut and getting caught up in a dystopian, cultural revolution. Imagine a science-fiction take on American Psycho.

GRANDMASTERS

Wong Kar- wai has had glory at Cannes before with his visually lush and unconventional takes on traditional genre features with In The Mood For Love and Chungking Express. Now he turns his fine eye to a classic martial arts tale (based on the Ip Man series) with Asian superstar Tony Leung pulling all the moves.

RUST AND BONE

Jacques Audiard is known for his poetic yet brutal dramas such as A Prophet and The Beat My Heart Skipped. Hopes are high for this dramatic tale of a marine park worker crippled in an accident who finds solace with an immigrant bouncer. The magnificent Marion Cotillard plays the lead and after being sadly relegated in recent American roles she may have to clear space next to her first Oscar for La Vie En Rose…

LIKE SOMEONE IN LOVE

Abbas Kiarostami is a master of blurring the line between fiction and cinematic construct and recently had glory at Cannes with Certified Copy. Here he heads to Japan, focusing on the relationship between an aging academic and a student side-lining as a prostitute. Whatever the context of their relationship the director’s previous work dictates that appearances can be deceiving.

ON THE ROAD

Jack Kerouac’s seminal road journey novel has been rolling around studios for years and now Walter Salles of the excellent road movie The Motorcycle Diaries turns his attention to the tale of two young men making their way across fifties America. Sam Riley of the the brilliant Control appears alongside Kirsten Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen, Elisabeth Moss and Steve Buscemi. For the cast alone this is a must see.

LAWLESS

Reminiscent of his gritty western The Proposition, Australian director John Hillcot’s latest is another tale of outlaw brothers (here in prohibition era America) whose familial bonds are pushed to the limit by the pursuing lawmen and each other. Again this is a stellar cast; Tom Hardy, Guy Pearce, Jessica Chastain and Gary Oldman to name just a few.

THE ANGEL’S SHARE

Britain’s poet of the people Ken Loach is another Cannes stalwart and this appears to balance the mix between gentle humour and gritty realism of his previous work and concerns a young tearaway who finds a chance at redemption and success in the surprisingly sophisticated world of whisky brewing and selling.

The Cannes Film Festival runs from 16 May to 27 May.

Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis Split. Angelina Jolie Pregnant.

Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis are ‘all  but offically  finished’ according to People Magazine, and have not been seen together in public for a year. There has been ferocious debate about the relationship in the last few months and it has now been confirmed that they are living apart.

 

The 48-year-old Pirates of the Caribbean actor has been with the 39-year-old Paradis for 15 years and they have two children together.

 

“According to multiple sources…[they] are all but officially finished,” the magazine said.

 

Onlookers at the Golden Globes said Depp looked ‘subdued’.  “He didn’t smile, walked off stage and went right out the door.”

 

Angelina Jolie is reportedly three months pregnant with her and Brad Pitts 7th child. Congratulations to the happy couple!

Lady Gaga Tops DoSomething.org’s ‘Top 20 Celebs Gone Good’ List; Sophia Bush Named ‘Fan Favorite’, Bieber Shoots up the Rankings this Year; New Trend is Couples

DoSomething.org, one of the largest U.S. organizations that helps teens take action on causes they care about, it released its fourth annual ‘Top 20 Celebs Gone Good’ list.

Lady Gaga continues her reign as the star who uses her celebrity to do the most good. Known for her support of gay rights, AIDS, and poverty, she focused primarily this year on bullying, even taking her thoughts to the White House in December. She also announced the creation of her own charity, the Born this Way Foundation, which aims to empower youth and lead them to a brave new society where each individual is accepted and loved as the person they were born to be.

Making a meteoric rise to number two this year is Justin Bieber , up from number 10 last year. His fast rise is due to his prolific work with Pencils of Promise, an organization that builds schools in Laos and Guatemala. Justin is also a consistent supporter of Make-A-Wish, raised funds for charity with his fragrance and holiday album, and recently distributed $100,000 to Whitney Elementary School in Las Vegas.

“There are some interesting trends from this year’s list,” says Aria Finger, COO of DoSomething.org. “It’s dominated by young celebrities and we also see so many couples. Last year the list had its first power couple, Ashton and Demi who have now broken up, and this year there are a total of four couples. Doing good is definitely fun in groups.”

For the first time ever, DoSomething.org’s panel of social media and mobile experts incorporated Facebook voting to help them determine the impact of celebrities reaching an audience with their cause. The criteria stipulated giving money wasn’t enough to count as creating impact; instead, a celebrity needed to take an action others could emulate, like writing articles, building houses, or founding an organization. Facebook fans voted Sophia Bush as the first ‘Fan Favorite.’

To determine the rankings, DoSomething.org used its research team and an expert panel, who focused on three elements: popularity, influence, and impact. The first two were calculated using each celebrity’s number of Twitter followers and Facebook likes, as well as their IMDB Pro Scores, Billboard Social 50 ranking, and number of ChaCha inquiries.

Moneyball Film Review

Baseball, perhaps the most American of all sports, has served up the basis for many films from Bill Durham to The Love Of The Game. It seems to encapsulate all the positive attributes of the American dream, the underdog who overcomes insurmountable odds with a band of seeming
outsiders.

This concept serves the backbone of Moneyball, an adaptation of a factual account, penned by Michael Lewis, of the Oakland Athletics unorthodox rise to baseball history in the season of 2002. It is directed by Bennet Miller who has waited six years since his critically acclaimed debut Capote to pick up the directing reins again. Brad Pitt stars as Billy Beane, a former player whose young hopes have long been dashed, is now the Oakland’s manager fighting a losing battle against teams with more funds at their disposal and as a result better players. A chance encounter with a Yale economics graduate Peter Brand (Jonah Hill) presents Beane with an unusual solution; using a statistics model drawn up by Brand, Beane plans to recruit players whose skills are undervalued due to trivial reasons such as age and personal habits, signing them up within the team’s limited budget. Together Beane and Brand stand by their actions despite the theory being untested and the growing disapproval of the veteran members of management and the existing team members lead by Captain Art Howe (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Can they overcome the odds and earn the respect of their comrades? Take a guess…

Lewis’ account has been adapted by Aaron Sorkin, best known for television milestone The West Wing and last year’s award heavyweight The Social Network. If you’re familiar with Sorkin’s work then you know the score; machine gun speed dialogue, razor sharp wit and facts and figures fired out with such pace and panache the audience have no choice but to keep up and stay there. The sense of audience participation is confirmed with the heavy use of jargon and the refusal to stop the action to define what everything means. Anyone unfamiliar with baseball (including myself) may initially find these scenes impenetrable though the refusal to talk down to the audience grabs attention and creates an engagement with such scenes. The best parts of Moneyball play to these strengths very well indeed. Pitt and Hill’s scenes together spark with a playful yet mature weight to them; they deliver the jargon heavy dialogue with tremendous energy and verve whilst still finding room to inject humour and character development. An actor who in my opinion often swerves between excellent and bland quite erratically, Pitt is thankfully on quite excellent form here. He portrays the weary and bitter part of Beane’s personality very well, his sudden outbursts of anger coming out of left field and sending up the idea of a performer who must keep a grinning handsome face on an incredibly unstable empire. Hill in particular is extremely charming in a role that requires him to bypass the bawdy, frat boy style of humour that has marked out his film roles so far. It’s a classic fish out of water style role braced with moments of surprising dramatic clarity such as a brilliant moment when Pitt jokingly guides him through the tactics of firing players before ordering him to do it for real. It marks what hopefully will prove to be an exciting period in his career.
Director Miller takes the unusual and quite effective idea of taking us away from the pitch to focus on the background details of the sport. Beane refuses to watch matches in person fearing he may jinx the outcome so all of the actual playing for the most part of the film the game of baseball itself is confined to archive footage, televisions playing quietly in the corner and snatched radio reports. Miller sticks to the boardrooms, the changing rooms, offices and corridors of the stadium framing the characters within a world of closed in interior spaces juxtaposing against the wide open playing fields of the game. The film is shot by Wally Pfister, Christopher Nolan’s regular cinematographer, bringing a surprisingly cinematic feel to the back room proceedings including one elegant tracking shot that follows Pitt from his office through the various hallways to the dressing room. Accompanied by a minimal yet stirring score by Mychael Danna, such scenes take on a fascinating edge providing a glimpse of a world that most sports based movies choose to ignore.

Yet as the action wears on the cracks begin to appear within Moneyball’s own formula. Compared with the astonishing pace of some of Sorkin’s previous material, there are moments when the action does unfortunately drag. The first two thirds spend too much time on the resistance Beane faces from his fellow team members and management. Such scenes do allow the incidental pleasure such as Pitt locking horns with Seymour Hoffman, Hoffman comfortably holding onto his title as one of America’s great character actors. Yet there are also distractions such as scenes touching on Beane’s relationship with his ex-wife (a wasted Robin Wright) and daughter. Clearly meant to cement the emotional connection with Pitt’s character but that has already been established in the scenes portraying his regret and disappointment with the game. It does manage to wring out an amusing cameo from Spike Jonze as Pitt’s spineless romantic replacement but the whole framing device feels rushed and forced and in the case of a wrap round sing-a-long narrative device, overly sentimental and a tad trite. Unfortunately Miller also looses confidence in his approach to the material as the third act succumbs to the obvious clichés that it had previously managed to steer clear of. The traditional turning of the tide montage is certainly to be expected but the last minute decision of Beane to attend a crucial game and watch it live is a step too far. We know exactly what to expect as players make their final, desperate stand against the odds and attain glory and this sudden ham-fisted finale can’t help but feel like a betrayal of what has gone before it. Some may argue that Miller and Sorkin manage to retain a bittersweet outlook of the closing scenes but for my money the damage had been irrevocably done.

How exactly a film about such a particularly American subject will be embraced here in the United Kingdom is uncertain. The sheer slew of information and sometimes sluggish is a barrier that may limit its appeal outside the State’s but Pitt’s charisma, Hill’s charm and the verve of many of the early scenes do make Moneyball a worthy if somewhat drawn out watch.

Angelina Jolie's Directorial Debut, Trailer Released.

If there was an award for over-achieving Angelina Jolie would definitely win it, an Oscar winning actor, six children, Brad Pitt on her arm, and an activist.

Layed up with flu for a few days and quarantined from her children, she banged out the script for ‘In the Land of Blood and Honey’, her directorial debut. A women of substance, Jolie’s debut is a political film about the war in Bosnia. It looks amazing, and we can’t wait to see it. Check it out below.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt To Quit Acting: “We Had a Good Run”

Angelina Jolie has revealed that she “doesn’t love” acting as much as she used to.

Jolie was in tears when she was honoured for her controversial war movie, The Land Of Blood And Honey, at the Sarajevo Film Festival. She was praised for her directing debut, which is about a Muslim woman and a Serbian man during the Bosnian war in the 1990s. However, Jolie also said that she and Brad plan to quit acting soon.

“As Brad and I get older, we’re going to do fewer films,” she said. “I’ve been working for a long time, he’s been working for a long time. We’ve had a nice run and don’t want to be doing this our whole lives.”

Jolie added: “I’ve never not been grateful to be an actor. But I think when I was younger, I needed [acting] more. I was trying to question things in life, so you find these characters that help you find things and grow. I’m older and I know who I am, and I’m less interested in the character helping me answer something than in being able to answer it for myself, as a woman, as an adult, with my family.”

Jolie was Forbes highest paid actress in 2009 and 2011, and she and boyfriend Brad Pitt are parents to six children, Maddox, 9, Pax, 7, Zahara, 6, Shiloh, 5 and twins Vivienne and Knox, 3.

She said: “Home is wherever we are. I’m very bad at staying in one place. I’m also bad at sitting still. There’s so much to explore in the world, so I love travel. If you can travel I think it’s the best way to raise kids.”

Brad Pitt could be a professional baseball player.

The ‘Fight Club’ star was so impressive in his training for upcoming film ‘Moneyball’ – in which he plays a baseball manager – he could forge a career in the sport if his acting career goes downhill, says his co-star, former San Francisco Giants professional Casey Bond.

Casey said: “He’s got some skill. He might have missed his calling in baseball I guess. If acting didn’t work out he’s pretty good… I think that he’s got that in his back pocket if anything.

“He was out there a couple days and he took batting practice with us and stuff, threw the baseball around. He was very much involved with all aspects of the baseball side of the movie as well.”

While Brad could be a baseball star, Casey also praised the 47-year-old actor – who raises six children with partner Angelina Jolie – as a “master” of his craft who gave great advice to his less-experienced sporting co-stars.

He told E! Online: “He had a lot of great advice … When we were shooting scenes, in between takes he’d walk me through different techniques he used so everything comes across right on film…obviously he’s a master at that.”

The film – which also stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Robin Wright, Jonah Hill, Chris Pratt – is based on the true story of Oakland A manager Billy Beane , who attempts to lead a competitive team to success despite the club’s poor financial situation.

The Tree of Life {Film Review}

Terrence Malick has been a unique filmmaker, always distancing himself from conventions to bring his own artistic license. From his 38 years of being in the industry, he has only made five films. It took him a full 20 years from Days of Heaven (1978) to The Thin Red Line (1998). He is infamous for shooting footage the length of a football field and also not being part of the publicity spot-light. The Tree of Life is his new movie since 2005’s The New World, barely any details were released for the film. Only two posters and a trailer were only shown to various multiplexes. It finally got screened at 2011 Cannes Film Festival, and it was received mixed reactions of boos and applause. I, however, thought it was worth the wait.

The Tree of Life is quite simply a breathtaking experience, a beautifully crafted film that doesn’t really give you straight answers but really makes you think. The film will be, inevitably, be compared to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey but it also reminded me of Koyaanisqatsi. The film deals with questions that the characters imply through-out; what is the meaning of our existance? What is our purpose in life? The story revolves around Jack (Sean Penn), who works as an architect in modern day America. He starts to think back during his childhood during the 50s, with his parents and going through different phases in his life. His parents are played by Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain, who resemble two things that runs the theme during the duration; nature and grace. Nature is unpredictable and harsh, which Pitt tries at one point make his sons strong and confident. Grace is the complete opposite, it is elegant and calm as Chastain becomes supportive to her sons. Young Jack (Hunter McCracken) is very conflicted from the two, he leans towards nature but as an adult, he starts to feel more empathetic (shown through his sub-conscious walking through a desert and eventually ends up in a beach)

The performances from the entire cast is superb. They are barely given any dialogue, but their natural reactions and expressions are subtle. It is the meaning of the phrase; show, don’t tell. McCracken impresses as the Young Jack, showing the childhood curiosity and frustration everyone deals with. Such as a scene where he walks with his mother in town and notices police officers taking convicts away in their patrol cars. Looks up to his mother and asks in a worried tone if he’ll ever be like them? Sean Penn doesn’t get as much screen-time but he makes a presence when he’s thinking about his childhood experiences.

The film has a non-linear narrative, often cutting away from Jack’s story to shots of the formation of the universe and how the planets are created. Then it views when the dinosaurs roamed the Earth, continuing Malick’s trademark on showing nature as a major element. All of these sequences are shot beautifully. Legendary special photographic effects supervisor Douglas Trumbull (who was responsible for the effects in 2001 and Blade Runner), was a consultant on the effects of this film. The effects in this film look organic and believable, a film to be big in scale requires believability (especially when dealing with a theme about creation and existence) The scenes with Jack’s family comes across as a family home movie, a sense of nostalgic memorabilia.

There is not much I want to say to reveal too much of the film, it really is something to see to believe. To put simply; if you are fan of Terrence Malick or want a film that has a deep message that is subtle, there is no excuse not to miss this film.

Overall; The film may divide opinions; some may find it pretentious, others may find it as a work of art. I, however, find it to be a meditating and philosophical film that is just as beautiful to watch. A huge change from the summer blockbuster season and strongly recommended.
