SISTER SCRIBES: CASS GRAFTON ON THE CHALLENGE OF NAMING CHARACTERS

What’s in a name? Or perhaps that question should be, ‘who’s in a name’?

I’ve realised that I have a two-tier approach to naming the characters in my novels. For the leads, I go to extreme lengths not to use names of people I know personally, but for all the background characters, I am more relaxed and confess a few of my friends have popped up—in name only, I stress—over recent years!

However, I certainly couldn’t use a first name for one of my leads—someone I spent a lot of time with, got to know and had probably fallen in love with—and then in a later book give the same first name to an unpleasant character.

This is not something I share with Jane Austen, who seems to have had a much more prosaic approach, often using a first name for a heroine in one novel and then giving it to an unpleasant character in another. These names were also prolific amongst her close family, including frequent use of names shared by her brothers and their wives and children!

One of the best examples is Elizabeth Bennet in Pride & Prejudice. She’s a strong, confident young woman, a character Jane Austen had clearly become attached to, as shown in a letter written to her sister, Cassandra, the day after the book’s publication:

“I must confess that I think her as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print, & how I shall be able to tolerate those who do not like her at least, I do not know.” 29th January 1813

Yet in her last completed novel, Persuasion, the author gives the name Elizabeth to Miss Elliot, who is cold, haughty and self-centred.

More amusing is Austen’s aversion to the name Richard. In the opening paragraph of Northanger Abbey, she refers to the heroine’s father as ‘a very respectable man, though his name was Richard’.

She does use the name across several of her novels, but only for non-speaking characters, with the most scathing reference in Persuasion.

“…that the Musgroves had had the ill fortune of a very troublesome, hopeless son; and the good fortune to lose him before he reached his twentieth year… He had, in fact… been nothing better than a thick-headed, unfeeling, unprofitable Dick Musgrove, who had never done anything to entitle himself to more than the abbreviation of his name, living or dead.”

Of course, there’s always the option of simply not giving a lead character a first name, something Daphne du Maurier did in one of my all time favourite novels, Rebecca. The book’s title is the name of the first Mrs de Winter, and the story is narrated by the second. This Mrs de Winter’s name is never revealed.

The author was often asked why this was so, and in a book she later wrote about her novels and writing career, Daphne du Maurier gave this explanation:

“…why did I never give the heroine a Christian name? The answer to the last question is simple: I could not think of one, and it became a challenge in technique, the easier because I was writing in the first person.”

Charles Dickens is, of course, notable for thinking up names to suit a characters’ nature or profession: Sloppy, Wopsle, Sweedlepipe, Pumblechook, Skimpole, Bumble and Toodle, to name but a few.

I think we can be pretty certain these weren’t people he knew in person, but—fabulous as they are—I don’t think it’s a talent I have. Perhaps it’s time to browse the Penguin Classic Baby Name Book for some inspiration…

The Business of Books: A Sense of Place – Jane Cable on how fact and fiction can easily blur

Writers are inspired by many different things but for me it always starts with a place. A little over two years ago I found myself in the middle of the steam punk festival in Lincoln. People in amazing costumes were everywhere, breathing life into the city’s cobbled climbs and quirky coffee shops. It felt as though I had walked into the beginning of a novel and very quickly I realised that I had. It was just down to me to write it.

Last week I went back. The latest round of editing is almost complete – it won’t be the last, but I’m finally satisfied that the manuscript is almost in good enough shape to be found a home. I have a couple of agents in my sights and a shortlist of three publishers who take direct submissions and whose criteria it fits. This time I’m going to be very careful.

The story has two main locations, the city of Lincoln itself and the picturesque village of Winteringham on the banks of the Humber. I construct the settings for my stories very carefully; I know where the characters’ houses, flats – and barges – are; the places they work; the bars and restaurants they frequent and where my heroine Rachel goes running. In my own mind I create details so rich I inhabit the settings myself – so it comes as something of a shock when they are not quite as I remembered.

Much of the Lincoln part of the story takes place along the Fossdyke Navigation which joins the heart of the city to the River Trent. I think I surprised my husband by saying, “That’s Rachel’s flat” – and surprised myself by having forgotten it has a balcony overlooking the canal. But the story doesn’t need a balcony so I won’t be adding one. The apartment in my mind is so very real it would feel uncomfortable anyway.

I don’t think this is especially strange or odd – no more than is normal for writers anyway. The best of fiction is so much about the richness of the characters, to create them I think you need to actually walk in their footsteps, inhabit their world. For me, once I’ve grounded them in a physical setting, everything else falls into place. I am completely in awe of authors who can imagine and populate whole new worlds.

But I’m having to accept that my memory is far from perfect. I needed a male character who was a without doubt a local man so I picked an unusual surname from Winteringham’s war memorial. On a return visit to the museum in Lincoln I thought it such a co-incidence a Daubney was quoted on one of the display panels. When we arrived in Winteringham, the name wasn’t on the memorial at all. I read it three or four times with growing disbelief. Was another of my characters, the enigmatic Nick, up to his tricks again?

It seems so… either that or subliminal recall is far stronger than we think. I needed to name one of the properties close to the village centre. Not anything too twee, but something comfortingly rural, so I decided on Bramble Cottage. This visit I noticed that the alleyway running up the side of the houses is called Bramble Lane. I leave you to draw your own conclusions.

The study of 2,000 reading enthusiasts was created to determine the ultimate list of the top 50 books that should be on every child’s reading list, encouraging bedtime reading for British families.

The research, commissioned by Sainsbury’s to celebrate World Book Day, found C.S. Lewis’ adventures in Narnia are no less thrilling today – The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe finished third in the list of 50 books, while Winnie the Pooh and Black Beauty rounded off the top five.

The research also surveyed parents of children aged under 16 and found a good story really is timeless, results showed – six in ten parents still like to read stories to their children that their own parents once read to them as a little one.

Perhaps it’s no surprise then that 72 per cent of parents said bedtime reading is one of the most key bonding experiences with their child.

Tony Robinson, actor, comedian and author, who worked with Sainsbury’s on the campaign, added: “The response from parents and the lengths they go to in bringing these stories to their children as vividly as possible is amazing.

“It shows that the power of make believe is so important in the development of a child and a key role in parents bonding with their young ones.”

To celebrate the nation’s week of reading, Sainsbury’s is encouraging children to read more by exploring the world of books and dress up as their favourite fictional characters. Sainsburys.co.uk will be hosting in-store ‘Make Believe’ events nationwide, to support the nation’s reading week complete with reading corners and activities to encourage children to read more and inspire parents to get involved.

Film Characters To Put Into Your Low Budget Film.

The key to low-budget film-making is to have as few locations as possible. Locations and travel cost money.

Now, onto characters. You can’t afford to have a baseball player in your film if you want to see him in action. The key is having characters who can look authentic without renting expensive stadiums.

CIA agents are always popular in films. All you need is an actor in a suit, and, possibly, a fake gun. (If you are filming outside with a fake gun you must alert the authorities and tell them you will be filming in the area. Least you get shot by armed police thinking you are some kind of homicidal killer).

FBI agents: Ditto.

Waitress. Make a gritty, real life drama. It is relatively easy to talk a cafe owner into filming in their establishment for free. They will probably say yes for some publicity and a thank you in the credits.

People in love; everyone loves a good love story, and a happy ending. The purpose of film is to tell a story visually. Is there possibly an easier story to tell than a story about love and relationships. Something we all understand and go through?

Gangsters. a suit, a fake cockney accent and a fake gun. Brevity is the soul of low-budget film-making. Be careful when doing a gangster film though. They are heard to do well as Martin Scorsese has put the bar so high. You could make a good short if you have a good, original take on it.

Zombies; It’s easy to find a trainee make up artist who wants to add to their portfolio so your zombies will be authentic. It’s another popular genre.

Vampires; They are huge right now thanks to Twilight and True Blood. How hard is it to find some black clothes and fake blood? Bloody easy in fact.

More important than the genre and characters for a film is the script. An original film, well acted, and with a good script can beat any big budget blockbuster. Money is no longer a problem for independent filmmakers. You can make a film on a shoestring budget.
