The Future of Meat

TOAST Presents:
The Future of Meat
5th April
Hawksmoor Guildhall

The team behind TOAST are back and this time they’re delving into the meatiest of subjects.
From what you read in the papers, carnivores of the future will dine on horsemeat burgers, grasshopper canapés, and mince grown in petri dishes. But sensational headlines aside, what is the future of meat?

thefutureofmeatTOAST have partnered with Hawksmoor and The Ginger Pig to bring together three experts on the topic: Hawksmoor executive chef Richard Turner, The Ginger Pig owner Tim Wilson, and Philip Lymbery, CEO of charity Compassion in World Farming and author of Farmageddon: The True Cost of Cheap Meat. The panel will share their perspectives on the UK’s current relationship with meat, what a healthy, sustainable supply chain could look like, and what we’ll really be eating 100 years from now.

In association with The Ginger Pig and taking place at city steak-institution Hawksmoor Guildhall on Saturday 5th April, the event will not only bring together some of the meatiest minds in the business, but a bevy of delicious brunch dishes and an expertly blended Bloody Mary or two.

Kicking off at 11.30am, guests will enjoy that most stirring of brunch cocktails before cracking on with a debate led by three men who know a thing or two about meat.

First up, The Ginger Pig owner Tim Wilson, one of the most respected meat producers in Britain. Having won countless accolades, including Best Food Producer in the Observer Food Awards, his opinion promises to be as conscientious as his award-winning produce.

No stranger to the subject himself is Richard Turner, Group Executive Chef of Hawksmoor, who has planned and overseen the kitchens of all five of Hawksmoor’s London outposts, co-authored the Hawksmoor at Home cookbook and worked with Meatopia events, Turner and George butchers and PittCue Co. Stepping out from behind the stoves for this special event, Richard is sure to bring his extensive expertise to the table.

Last but not least is Chief Executive Officer of Compassion in World Farming, Philip Lymbery, whose book Farmageddon: The True Cost of Cheap Meat was published earlier this year to wide acclaim. Having campaigned ceaselessly for the fair farming of animals since the 90s, Philip’s passionate views promise to set the debate alight.

Once those minds have been given a vigorous workout, guests will enjoy a sharing-style brunch cooked by the team at Hawksmoor Guildhall (using produce from The Ginger Pig of course!). Turning the concept of the Full English on its head, the spread will attempt to show how meat can be used sparingly to create a sumptuous feast. Dynamic yet delicious dishes will include pig cheek scrapple with grits, short-rib bubble and squeak, homemade baked beans, fried eggs, black pudding, hash browns and piles of toast with plenty of butter.

On sale now at http://www.eatdrinktoast.com/events tickets cost £40 and will include a Bloody Mary on arrival, the ‘The Future of Meat’ debate and brunch.

Shwop Boutique to sell the best childrenswear items donated to Shwopping campaign
A host of celebrities including Joanna Lumley, Abbey Clancy, Rochelle Humes, Peaches Geldof, Alex Gerrad and Zoe Ball have donated items that will be sold
All money raised go to charity partner Oxfam as part of their Mother Appeal initiative
Over 1,000 shwopped childrenswear clothing will be on sale over three days

Marks & Spencer (M&S) is set to open its first-ever childrenswear pop-up store when a three-day Kids Shwop Boutique opens to the public this March in aid of Oxfam’s Mother Appeal.

Open from Thursday 6th – Saturday 8th March at the retailer’s Marble Arch store, the one-off secondhand store will sell the best childrenswear items donated to M&S and Oxfam’s sustainable fashion initiative, Shwopping by the UK public and a host of celebrity donations.

All proceeds raised from the Kids Shwop Boutique will go towards Oxfam’s Mother Appeal campaign – which is being supported by M&S – that aims to raise £10 million for projects that help mothers around the world lift themselves and their families out of poverty for good.

Shwoppers will be able to pick up once loved childrenswear items from Britain’s top style icons and celebrity mums including Abbey Clancy, Peaches Geldof, Alex Gerrard, Zoe Ball, Rochelle Humes, Sarah Story, Mel Giedroyc and Shwopping ambassador Joanna Lumley. And, thanks to the UK government, every pound raised for the appeal will be doubled. *

Each celebrity-donated item will include personal words of wisdom stitched into the fabric of the item allowing advice to be passed onto the new owner.

Entry to the Kids Shwop Boutique is free, but visitors will have to shwop – hand over an unwanted item of kids clothing, using old or unused clothes as their ticket to the exclusive sale.

M&S has asked the public to donate childrenswear items to support the Oxfam campaign through its joint Love, Mum initiative. All other items of clothing donated will also go towards the appeal.

The public can show their support by Shwopping items in any M&S store add their words of wisdom on social media mentioning @shwopping and the hashtag #LoveMum.

M&S and Oxfam’s Shwopping collaboration urges shoppers to donate – or ‘shwop’ – an unwanted item of clothing that will go on to be re-sold, re-used or recycled by Oxfam, cutting waste while raising much-needed funds for the charity.

Since its launch in April 2012, Oxfam has received 6.9 million items of clothing thanks to Shwopping, worth £4.5 million for the charity. All money raised by Shwopping is used to support Oxfam’s projects around the world working to alleviate poverty.

CARE International’s Walk In Her Shoes Led by Helen & Laura Pankhurst

Helen Pankhurst, great-granddaughter of suffragette Emmeline, and daughter Laura invite UK women to join her in London on Saturday 8 March (International Women’s Day) to ‘walk in the shoes’ of women and girls across the developing world who must walk for many miles every day to collect water for their families. The walk launches CARE International’s nationwide campaign, Walk In Her Shoes.

Helen Pankhurst

The walk will begin at the Tate Britain and end at the Southbank Centre’s ‘Women of the World’ festival. It aims to raise awareness of CARE’s wider Walk In Her Shoes campaign, which encourages women and men here in the UK to walk 10,000 steps a day for one week from 24-30 March and raise money for CARE.  The charity’s work includes building wells in poor communities, allowing girls and women more time to go to school or work.

Dr Helen Pankhurst and daughter Laura

Helen Pankhurst said: “Join me on International Women’s Day to walk in solidarity with women and girls around the world who are denied the rights to live, learn, earn and thrive simply because they were born female. Walk In Her Shoes so girls can go to school and women can do paid work instead of walking for miles every day.”

Girl collecting water, South Sudan

Seventy per cent of the world’s poorest billion people are women, many millions of whom walk more than six kilometres a day in search of water and firewood, carrying loads of up to 20kg.

CARE will provide fundraising support to all who participate. To join Helen on 8 March or take part in the Walk In Her Shoes campaign, visit www.careinternational.org.uk/iwd2014  or call 020 7091 6111.

Words For The Wounded Writing Prize

walking wounded competitionFrost Magazine has came across a very worthy charity thanks to Jane Cable: Words For The Wounded was launched by Margaret Graham, an author at Random House.

Margaret said; “I launched the charity Words for the Wounded  last year and we raise money via writing competitions and donations to help in the recovery of our wounded service personnel. This year we are supporting the Creative Arts Unit at Tedworth House Recovery Centre. Every penny from the entry fees and donations goes to the wounded. We raise money for the prizes in other ways. My son and son-in-law have been noble and done various Ironman marathons and Triathlons for us but this year my colleague and old school friend, Jan Speedie, and I are giving them a break and doing a tandem sky dive. Yes, I know. My grandchildren say the same, ‘You’re mad.’ But needs must.  My agent despairs of the lengths to which I will go to be strapped to a handsome young man.

Words for the Wounded has a 1st prize of £250, 2nd £100 and 3rd £50, and publication in Writers’ Forum magazine. Entry fee is £4.50. We ask for poetry, non-fiction or fiction up to a maximum of 400 words on the subject of The Journey. It can be physical, emotional or both. The closing date is 11 March.”

Margaret also has a W4W blog which includes writing tips www.wordsforthewounded.blogspot.co.uk.

Margaret went on to say that “the majority of those injured are under 25. These are life changing injuries and they will need help to recover their self-confidence and independence to get the best from their long lives.”

I am sure you will agree this is a great charity and an equally great competition. Enter now and spread the word.

One In Three In The UK Can’t Afford To Eat Healthily

appleMore than a third (39 per cent) of people in the UK – around 25 million – say they do not eat healthily because it is too expensive to do so.   One in seven people (14 per cent) said they do not have time to prepare healthy food, and one in ten (10 per cent) said they do not know how to eat healthily.

These are the findings of new research out today from UK health charity Nuffield Health, who questioned more than 3,100 UK adults.  The figures provide a snapshot of the UK’s views on obesity and healthy lifestyle choices.  Experts say the findings are concerning, and show poor understanding about healthy living and an acceptance that obesity has become the norm in society.

The research, carried out to support National Obesity Awareness Week, highlights the urgency for effective obesity prevention strategies.  Of those polled, a third of people said they had noticed a rise in obesity in the area they live.  40 per cent of people said that seeing obese adults in the area they live in is common, with almost the same number – 38 per cent – saying that childhood obesity is now the norm.

The figures back up research released this week by the National Obesity Forum which shows that current strategies are failing to halt the rise in obesity, and a 2007 prediction that more than half of people in the UK will be obese by 2050 will in fact be exceeded.

Of the respondents, a further 550 people who were measured as obese – with a Body Mass Index of more than 30* – were questioned about their views on weight management.

Of this group:

  • Nearly half (48 per cent) are resigned to remaining obese due to a lack of willpower
  • 17 per cent said they had never attempted to lose weight
  • One in five (20 per cent) would rather be overweight than watch what they eat.

When questioned about attitudes towards exercise, the figures showed:

  • 40 per cent said they find exercise boring
  • A quarter (25 per cent) do not have time to exercise
  • One in seven (14 per cent) would rather be overweight than have to exercise.

When questioned about the Government’s response to tackling the problem, almost half (45 per cent) said that GP referrals for exercise should be considered. 40 per cent would like to see increased funding for recognised weight management programmes, 43 per cent want stricter regulations on ‘unhealthy’ food and drink chains from sponsoring high profile events and 40 per cent said that school meals should be regulated as a matter of urgency.

While the majority of respondents (81 per cent) said obesity is the fault of the individual, when questioned about contributing factors to the UK’s obesity epidemic, more than half (55 per cent) said the blame lies with the food industry.

Jackie Donkin, Nutritional Therapist at Nuffield Health, said; People who are trapped in the rut that is obesity need to take a step back and really think about the food they are eating.   As a nation, if we continue in this way we are heading for not only an obese population of children and adults, but a chronically ill population.  The key to success is not just dieting, it is long-term lifestyle changes that people need to adopt and which will only work if taken in small steps over a long period of time.

Eating more fruit and vegetables, cutting down on takeaways, or eating food in its natural state, rather than covered in rich sauces, will drastically reduce the amount of fat and sugar we eat.  Increasing day-to-day activity; walking up the stairs instead of taking the lift; walking those short distances instead of taking the car; going for a walk around the block in the evening, will all contribute to a healthier lifestyle, which once adopted will become much easier to maintain over time.”

Star-studded Audience Show Their Support For The (RED) Auction at Sotheby’s

In late November at Sotheby’s in New York, a standing-room only crowd helped raise more than $26 million for The Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa. The star-studded audience gathered for The (RED) Auction celebrating design and innovation, which had been curated by Sir Jonathan Ive and Marc Newson in collaboration with musician and activist Bono. The sale exceeded all expectations totaling more than $13 million, which was matched by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
