Last Minute Ideas to Celebrate Romance

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner we thought you might appreciate our romantically themed idea’s list without the added Teddy Bears, chocolates or Champagne.

Novel Beauty-Clever Skincare and Cosmetics

This week, we had the pleasure of meeting the talented founder behind Novel Beauty. The idea behind Novel Beauty was to create skincare products for Men & Women which ‘reads you’. Nneka, the brains behind Novel Beauty explains she wanted to create a product which responded to each person individually and the way Novel Beauty have achieved this is by using active natural ingredients that respond to your body as an individual. In keeping with their brand message of letting their products read you, the luxurious, all-natural range are encased in a luxurious refillable book which are designed to fit in to anyones home proudly and elegantly.

With both gifts for Men and Women, Nneka herself recommends the romantically themed Poor Man’s Rose bath and body set;

Poor Man's Rose Bath & Body Set

This collection includes Stream of Consciousness, a raw sugar scrub which polishes and conditions the skin and Platonic Dialogue, a daylight cream with the vitamins of Aloe Vera, seaweed, sesame, apricot and the romantic geranium rose oil.

Novel Beauty is available through www.novelskincare.co.uk and through notonthehighstreet.com

The Bellavita Valentine’s Day Hamper

Because we all know the way to a loved one’s stomach is through food. Italian food heroes Bellavita are encouraging us to spend Valentine’s day the Italian way with a Valentine’s selection which is designed to bring a touch of Italian romance to your evening. Bellavita have designed their hamper with the idea of taking the stress out of creating a romantic meal for two. The ingredients, which are sourced from independent Italian producers are enough to prepare a three-course meal for two with a recipe card included. Ok so it wouldn’t really be a Valentine’s meal without the addition of bubble and chocolates but at £39 for the entire hamper, we think that we’ll skip the reservations and rustle up our own Italian feast courtesy of Bellavita.

The hampers can be purchased both online and in store:

Grill Market Lomax Review

Grill Market Lomax Review food

Grill Market Lomax Review

For those healthy bunnies in West London, there is a new place in Chelsea to fill your body up with the best British produce. This is the second Grill Market site and it is situated on the ground floor of the Lomax’s flagship location. All the meat is free range, British and bred to the strictest welfare standards. Fish carries the MSC certificate and all the veg is supplied by Covent Garden. This is a unique collaboration with Lomax Chelsea and I would definitely pop in as the food is not just healthy, but also delicious. There is strictly no membership policy so anyone can drop in. Everything is free from gluten, dairy and refined sugar whenever possible. I had the free range spiced chicken with pomegranate glaze and a mix of all of the salads. It was yummy and I will definitely be going back.

We will also be reviewing an exercise class soon, so watch out for that.

Why Soccer Is More Than Just A Sport

For those outside of the sport’s dedicated and passionate fan base, it is difficult to understand why or how soccer can have such a significant and emotive impact upon so many people. It is with almost disbelief that some people view grown men and women crying with joy or wailing with anger over what is just a game to them.

Soccer’s importance and presence within its fans’ lives will likely become even more apparent over the next few weeks with the conclusion of the League Cup, which sees Chelsea being the 4/6 favourite to win in the League Cup betting. This colossal event, which sees all clubs of the Football League compete against each other, has been to known to whip fans into an emotional frenzy each and every year.

But why is this and are those non-fans right to judge soccer fans for their seemingly irrational investment in – to quote many a sceptic – a bunch of men kicking a ball around? Moreover, why is it that many find it understandable for those actually playing the sport to show extremities of emotions, such Steven Gerrard’s passionate leaking of emotion after Liverpool’s win over Manchester City in 2014, but feel that fans are weird for also doing so?

To understand the answer to this question, one has to realise that for many soccer is not just a sport but a powerful narrative that they are both emotionally invested in and mentally involved with. It is not just a defined, and isolated, game but an entity comprising of personal belief, identity and loyalty. It is a funnel for national pride and a uniting factor for many a country’s population.

An excellent example of this is the powerful and symbolic domestic reaction to Germany’s victory at the 2014 World Cup. Many critics and observers commentated that Germany’s joyous reaction to their country’s achievement was one of the first carefree expressions of such a feeling since the twin World Wars cast a shadow over the country’s ability to display patriotism.

This is soccer’s power, its ability to harness a collective pride and feeling of achievement and share it amongst its supporters. It is a form of entertainment that invites its punters to invest, not in fictional creations, but real people and their challenges. Likewise, it welcomes these fans to share the credit and the moment of victory with its players.

If people are allowed to cry over the death of Albus Dumbledore or be warmed by the heart-breaking romance of Fault In Their Stars, why should others not weep at watching an underdog side breakthrough or a former star briefly return to glory? Is seeing a group of individuals – through determination, hard work and ambition – achieve their dreams not worthy of a proper emotional response and vocal appraisal?

The answer is, of course, is because to these dedicated professionals and their passionate fans soccer is not a game of grass and goalposts but of blood and tears and heart.

In Pursuit of the Perfect Winter Boots

ShopStyle.com unearths the definitive trends for you, revealing the must-have items for the month

finding the perfect boots

Each month ShopStyle, the web’s premier fashion search engine, will reveal a trend that has featured high up, or has made a surprise jump on the search term list. Sian O’Flaherty SHOPSTYLE’s resident Online Shopping Specialist will also offer a lesson in fashion terminology with a glossary of monthly ‘it’ words to help you hone in on that trend.

image003

It may come as no surprise that over-the-knee, chelsea, knee-high, cut-out and thigh high boots fall in the top search terms this month. Whether it’s burgundy studded leather or moss-green suede, the casual boot is the most coveted footwear staple for autumn/winter 2013.

Sian says “When hunting online for your must-have winter boots try not to panic buy a pair that won’t last the season, yes sorry, that means no Rita Ora style patent thigh-highs please. With so much variety on the market there is something to suit everyone; tall or short, slim or curvy. But before you get booted up, make sure you consider the style, fabric and hue to ensure you choose a style that will help complement your figure.

“Traditionally, knee-high or over-the-knee styles look great on taller women. When wearing either of these styles, try to keep the rest of your outfit simple so your boots make a statement. Shorter women should opt for an ankle or mid-calf length boot to keep their proportions in check.”

Glossary:

In order to track down the right winter boots for you, Sian O’Flaherty has developed a list of terms that will make your fashion shopping experience a whole lot simpler.

“Fashion vernacular is something of a minefield for most of us. Unless your name is Anna Wintour how can you be expected to know what a ‘chunky palladium boot’ is supposed to look like? When we analyse search terms we can see that entering a variety of terms can give fashion hunters the best results. Here are some words of wisdom that will help you think on your feet and hone in on the trend of the month.”

Cuban heel boots have an androgynous style and historically feature in men’s boots. It’s a classic that will take you from one season to next, and looks great with skirts or skinny jeans.

Thigh-high styles are fairly obvious; a flat style can look classy with a wool miniskirt or tartan kilt. I would recommend investing financially if you’re thinking of buying this style, there’s a lot of fabric involved, and so make sure it doesn’t look poor quality.

Riding boots are usually knee high, classic brown or black equestrian style. If you’re channelling a Made In Chelsea style country weekend escape or a trip to the polo, these are the boots for you.

Chelsea boots are a classic, and possibly the most versatile of all the winter boots. They originated in the Victorian era and were used predominantly for horse riding, characterised by its elasticated siding. Investment piece alert!

Cut-out is a style ‘it phrase’ that’s been thrown around frequently of late, but this boot style is exactly that, cut out leather showing your tights or socks underneath. These are best worn with a party dress on a night out.

Biker boots are not as scary as you might think, they are usually flat and have decorative feature like buckles. If your search isn’t locating exactly what you want, try biker, they are not exclusive to hells angels, yummy mummies also look fab in these.

Palladium is equally on-trend in fashion slang this season; a throwback from the 90’s, they come with a chunky rubber sole and usually a chunky heel; we’re seeing lots in velvet this season. Give this a go and hopefully you’ll find ‘the one’.

What will you buy?
