How to optimise your environment to help fertility

fertility, get pregnant, get pregnant quick, acupuncture, how to get pregnantWe are becoming more aware of our impact upon the environment but seldom think how this affects our fertility. We spoke to Dr (TCM) Attilio D’Alberto to ask him how we can optimise our environment to help our fertility. Here are his top 5 tips:

  1. Reduce your exposure to chemicals

Our bodies are surrounded by numerous chemicals from fragrances in soaps, shampoos and perfumes to make-up and cleaning products, as well as nail polish that act like oestrogens.

Unknowingly, we are overdosing on these chemicals, which cause irregular hormone levels in men and women causing infertility. It’s better to limit the amount of chemicals in your home and in your body.

  1. Know your plastics

The use of plastics is a growing problem, not only for the environment but also for male and female fertility as they too can act like oestrogens. There are many things you can do to limit your exposure to plastics.

  • Keep all plastic containers out of the heat and sun as these can cause the chemicals within them to be released into your food and fluids.
  • Always try to buy foods that are not prepacked in plastic and use paper bags instead.
  • Don’t reuse clear plastic water and soft drink bottles.
  • Don’t use cling film. Use wax paper or parchment paper to cover your food.
  • Store food in glass, ceramic or stainless-steel containers.
  • Don’t cook food or put hot food into polystyrene.
  • Don’t heat foods in plastic containers.
  1. Air conditioning

Air conditioning can make you feel cold which weakens the body, as it needs to use up energy to keep you warm. The coldness also causes blood flow to slow down and this affects the regulation of fertility hormones which are moved around in the blood.

Whilst on the other hand, if the air conditioning is set at a high temperature it can cause irregular thyroid function, excessive sweating, agitation and irritability which can affect the menstrual cycle.

  1. Reducing your exposure to air pollution

It’s less well known that air pollution affects fertility. Exposure to air pollution can reduce the number of eggs a woman has.

Avoid walking next to busy roads, standing at junctions, using the underground system or breathing in any type of smoke (cigarette, BBQs, fires). If you can’t avoid being exposed to air pollution, you can protect yourself in two ways:

  1. Wear an air pollution mask.
  2. Change your car for one that is more environmentally friendly, i.e. one without a diesel engine.
  1. Reducing your exposure to 5G

We are now all being bombarded with 5G.

Research has shown a correlation between increased mobile phone use and reduced male fertility.

In women, mobile phones can affect thyroid function, causing irregular levels of thyroid stimulating hormone, which may also lead to infertility.

You can protect yourself from EMWs by either reducing your use of gadgets that emit EMWs or by neutralising them with semi-precious stones such as tourmaline.

Karora Gradual Tan Golden Girl, Instant Tan And CC Cream Review

I am pretty fair of skin and I love it. But just occasionally I give up my paleness for a bit of a tan. Usually when I am traveling, tired or ill. Sometimes you need all of the help you can get.

Karora Gradual Tan Golden Girl, Instant Tan and Karora CC Cream Skin Sensation were all giving to me by the lovely Karora who were not only very proud of their products, but also chose these three to be reviewed specifically for my pale skin.

Karora tanning products review

Karora Golden Girl Gradual Tan – Light/Medium

Is a gradual tanning product, so you can build up the colour. It gives a very good glow along with a deep hydration. This moisture rich lotion conditions skin and leaves it replenished and also gives a natural glow. You use this daily, like most gradual tan products. It can be used on face and body.

I would definitely continue to use this as it is a brilliant moisturiser and it also gives a sun-kissed glow. This is perfect for the kind of light, natural, non-orange tan I love.

Karora CC Cream for Face and Body

I love alphabet creams. I now wear BB creams far more than I wear foundation. I hadn’t tried as many CC Creams though.

This CC cream is less of a tanning product, and more of a skin-perfecting cream with a hint of glowing colour. It certainly made me look like I had just come back from holiday. It certainly gives radiance, reasonably coverage (depending on how your skin is. I would need concealer on top for any hormonal breakouts), and it is also blended with skin tone correcting botanicals of green tea leaf extract and jojoba seed oil, with argan oil and acai berry to rejuvenate the skin. You can use this on your face and body. Good stuff that does diminish every flaw but won’t cover up very bad skin days. Contains no Parabens, Chemicals, Artificial, Fragrances or Synthetic Dyes.

Karora Glow Glamster Instant Tan

I only got a tiny sample of this but I did give it a try: it is a good instant fake tan that is also water-resistant. I would need a bigger sample to do a proper review but I was impressed with my initial test.

Are you a fan of Karora? Do you like to fake tan?

Hazardous Chemicals Revealed In Children’s Clothing

toptipskidsbathtimefunChildren’s clothing and shoes by brands including Disney, Burberry and adidas have been shown to contain hazardous chemicals which could pose risks to adults and children when released into the environment, as revealed in a study released today by Greenpeace East Asia. [1]

Tests were carried out on 82 items sold by leading clothing brands including adidas, American Apparel, C&A, GAP, H&M, Li-Ning, Nike, Primark, Puma and Uniqlo and the findings revealed in the the report entitled “A Little Story About the Monsters in Your Closet”.

Chih An Lee, Toxics Campaigner at Greenpeace East Asia said:.

“As the starting point of the global clothing supply chain, the world needs to be aware of the dangerous corners being cut in manufacturing processes in regions like East Asia. Parents in particular should know the risks these brands are posing to future generations as they use and release these toxic hazardous monsters into our environment.”

More than half of the products tested contained nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs), a group of chemicals that break down in the environment to form toxic, hormone disrupting nonylphenol (NP). High levels were found in products made by brands including Burberry, Disney and American Apparel. Meanwhile, every item tested specifically for per / polyfluorinated compounds (PFCs) was found to contain one or more examples from this group of chemicals. [2] For example, an adidas swimsuit contained the highly persistent, PFOA at a concentration higher than the brand’s own limit in its Restricted Substance List. [3]

Though all products tested were intended for children and infants – a group particularly vulnerable to exposure to hazardous chemicals in the environment [4] – there was no significant difference between the range and levels of hazardous chemicals found in this study and those in previous studies looking at adults clothes [5].

“We need the brands to take a good hard look at their supply chain and the monsters they are using to make our children’s clothing. We also need people to recognise the power they have in bringing about change, by joining the growing movement making the industry Detox its supply chain and clean out clothes”, said An Lee

China remains the world’s largest textile producer and chemicals consumer and Greenpeace is calling on the government to help stop the use of hazardous chemicals in the textile industry. It is critical they publish a chemical blacklist to be acted upon immediately and urge factories to disclose chemical information, in order to facilitate chemical elimination and supply chain transparency and create a level playing field for the industry.

H20X5 Steam Cleaner Review

H20X5 Steam Cleaner reviewUpon arrival of the H20X5 Steam Cleaner my boyfriend was very confused. “I never thought I would see you get excited about a cleaning machine”, he said. “Oh, that’s only because this is supposed to be so easy to use that even you could do it”, I replied. “Well that makes more sense.” he laughed.

In truth I was excited about the steam cleaner because it also makes things easier for me. And it doesn’t use any nasty chemicals. But all of this excitement had to be backed up after using the cleaner.

The cleaner looks great, very stylish. It has lots of attachments and bits in the box. I decide to steam the curtains just to test the cleaner. It is easy to put together. I do it in minutes.

In fact the steam cleaner is a bit like a Mac computer; you can use it within minutes of taking it out of the box. After putting it together I filled it with water, using the measuring cup to fill it up to the max level and turn it on. It has an LED light which is red while heating up and green when not. It is ready within minutes and I start steaming. It is easy to use and only slightly heavier than I thought it would be.

I use different attachments and clean the flat. I cannot get over how easy it us to use, or how well it cleans. It is an essential product that, very quickly, I could never do without. Brilliant machine.

At £99.99 it may seem expensive, but it requires no other products and is 5 in 1: Floor Steam Cleaner, Carpet Steamer, Handheld steamer, window cleaner and Garment Steamer. It also eliminating 99% of bacteria. This makes the H2O Mop X5 by Thane Direct a home essential. Impressive.

Richard Spencer: Hair Q & A: How To Relax Black Hair, Make Hair Grow Back & Does Washing Hair Make it Fall Out?

trichologist, hair, hair problens, questions, hair loss, hair problems, advice, helpDoes washing my hair a lot make it fall out? Male Reader.

Washing hair does not CAUSE hair loss, but people with hair fall problems can experience more hair fall during the washing process, especially if loose hair is captured within the body of the hair.

How do I make my hair grow back? Male Reader

Most male hair loss is associated with genetics. This has a slow, degenerative effect upon the hair follicle. The regrowth of hair largely depends on the condition of a hair follicle. If a follicle is in a weakened state, but not degenerated, the correct and regular amount of blood stimulation can strengthen a hair follicle and encourage regrowth. This would involve trichological therapy and certain stimulants for home use.

If a follicle is degenerated, regrowth cannot occur. A consult with a qualified trichologist should give you the necessary answers and way forward.

What is the best way to relax black hair? Female Reader

Black hair should be relaxed every three months and no sooner. This gives the hair a chance to achieve 3cm of regrowth which will allow less over-lapping of the chemical. One must then make sure the right product is used, the correct strength and the correct time periods strictly adhered to. Please do go to our website for more info. We relax hair in our clinic with the utmost professionalism and care.

My doctor isn’t taking my hair loss seriously, saying it is cosmetic. What can I do? Female Reader

GP’s are not specifically trained to deal with the many types of hair loss that occur with men and women. Therefore, they may not be able to offer the correct diagnosis, advice and treatment.

Trichologists are specialists who are only concerned with hair and scalp disorders and I would advise people to seek their advice when a problem occurs.

How can I cover my hair loss? I never want to leave the house as it looks so thin. Female Reader

I am so sorry. This is such a traumatic position to be in. I completely understand and sympathise with you as we see many women with the same dilemma.

I wonder, have you had any help or advice so far? If not, please do take a step towards seeking help from a consultant trichologist. Make sure they are qualified and registered with the institute of Trichologists.

Depending on the length of time you have suffered with thinning hair, the trichologist should be able to explain what can and can’t be achieved. Don’t delay any further is my advice….and wish you well.

“GO ON, BREAK UP THIS VALENTINE’S DAY” – IT’S THE ANTI-VALENTINE’S DAY!

One in ten (15%) people have broken up with a loved one around Valentine’s Day, according to new research by Nationwide Building Society*. But the Society says “breaking up is not always a bad thing.”

“It all depends on the relationship and what you want to get out of it. If your relationship is not working, then change is not always a bad thing. For example, this Valentine’s Day we are encouraging those who have been let down by their bank or have a bad financial services relationship, to make the split and switch their current account to us, as we are a building society we do not have shareholders to satisfy we can focus on our customers.

Give Your Man Morning Glory this Valentine’s Day

Make Your Valentine’s Day Go With a Bang with Rude Health’s Naughty Breakfast Range

Recent health studies show that when it comes to getting your man in the mood this Valentine’s Day it really is all about having your oats, and leading cereal maker Rude Health has the perfect recipe to put the passion into your Valentine’s Day breakfast.

The most common cause for not having sex is because people are too tired, with one in three married Brits even saying sex has become a chore. Well, top independent food producer Rude Health, which is stocked in Waitrose and Sainsbury’s, has come up with the perfect solution to keep Britain in the mood this Valentine’s Day with its energy boosting Morning Glory porridge.

Porridge oats are rich in a variety of vitamins and minerals that are known to affect how we feel. These include: zinc, vitamin B6, iron, folic acid, calcium and magnesium to name a few. It is reported that a single serving of porridge oats contains 17% of the required daily intake of zinc, therefore making porridge the perfect answer for sustaining you for longer in bed.

So forget the champagne, oysters and chocolate, make sure you feed your man a hearty bowl of Rude Health’s porridge to make your Valentine’s Day go with a bang.

Rude Health founder, Nick Barnard said: “At Rude Health we produce food that gives you enough energy to stay in rude health all day.

“We’ve always maintained that you should breakfast like a king and it’s interesting to see that most Britons now cite being too tired to have sex. Start your day with a bowl of porridge and you’ll get all the energy you need for morning activities of any kind.”

Pixengo: New iPhone App helps men deliver on Valentine’s Day

Looking for the perfect way to say “I love you” to your girlfriend or wife this Valentine’s Day? Are you too skint to buy a card or just too lazy to drive to the shop and buy one? Perhaps you’re inept enough to forget the date completely and spend the day frantically trying to arrange that ‘surprise’ gift or trip.

Fortunately, there is now a new way to send your loved one a Valentine’s Day message. It takes just a few minutes and doesn’t cost a penny.

Pixengo, an innovative new App for the iPhone available to download from iTunes, is FREE and allows you to add thoughts and emotions to still images by fusing them with 30 second sound bites. Record a funny message, whisper sweet nothings or even propose if you are brave. Let your photos do the talking!

Pixengo means you can send personalised Valentine’s Day greetings to your partner. Capture a photo using the App or select an existing one from your camera roll – perhaps one of you, a screenshot of the flowers you forgot to buy or the necklace you ‘definitely’ ordered that hasn’t turned up yet. If you want to enhance the image Pixengo comes complete with special creative tools and filters.

Add a recording and share privately (or publicly!) via your Pixengo stream, email, Facebook or Twitter with the one you love. If you mess up you can rerecord, simple.

Lucky recipients see the photo, click on a play button to listen to the sound clip and have the option to like or comment. They can view ‘Pixengos’ in a web browser on their mobile or a computer; they do not need the App.

Although some might see Pixengo as a get out of jail free card it actually complements traditional gifts brilliantly, earning brownie points for gentlemen who remember and prepare for Valentine’s Day in advance.

For instance, if you’ve arranged a surprise trip why not send your partner a Pixengo clue? Or a picture of the intimate dinner you’ve laid out for when they return from work, complete with a seductive message? Pixengo allows you to add the finishing touch to what will hopefully be a perfect Valentine’s Day.

YOU MAKE ME FEEL LIKE A…. NATURAL APHRODISIAC

ONE of the last remaining tea producers in Britain, Higher Living is described as ‘the Rolls-Royce of tea’ and has firmly established itself as a leading expert in the world of herbal tea.

So much so in fact, that not only are the 23 blends 100% organic and extremely tasty, but three of them possess the natural ingredients needed to light up your Valentine’s night.

While some turn to alcohol to accompany a romantic evening, the health conscious and tee-total may have been lacking in assistance with sensual gusto… Well not anymore.

One for the ladies, Fennel is notably high in phytoestrogens, natural estrogen-like chemicals found in plants. In fact, in the 1930’s, fennel was considered to be used as a source for synthetic estrogen*. Ladies’, slip into something more comfortable and get the kettle on!

Chillies can fire you up in more ways than one. They contain the chemical capsaicin that can induce the release of endorphins to create a temporary high. Capsaicin also speeds up the metabolism and increases circulation, responses that are similar to those experienced when being intimate*.

One for the guys, Licorice has been used in ancient China for its love and lust provoking properties*. Research has revealed that the secret to Licorice could be the smell itself as it has shown to stimulate the male libido in a number of scientific studies**.

Higher Living Tea is priced from £1.99 RRP and available to buy from Asda, Tesco, Waitrose, Holland & Barrett, Planet Organic and Whole Foods.

Beauty Products and Cancer: Know the Facts

Have you dyed or relaxed your hair? Do you put on lipstick before you head out to work? Do you paint your nails? Many women have a beauty routine or beauty products that they regularly use. Have you ever worried that yours might increase your risk for cancer? Before you panic and cancel your appointment at the salon, read on—it’s time to break down some beauty-related cancer fact and fiction.

Hair Dye: It is estimated that more than one-third of women over age 18 and about 10 percent of men over age 40 use some type of hair dye. Hair dyes are full of chemicals—5,000, to be precise—and that hasn’t escaped the notice of cancer researchers. Decades ago, researchers began studying chemicals used in hair dye. They found that early dye formulations contained chemicals that could cause cancer in animals. Not surprisingly, manufacturers changed the formulas and eliminated some of these chemicals in the United States around 1980. Because so many people use hair dyes, researchers continue to monitor whether chemicals in hair coloring products can increase risk for cancer in humans.

According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the evidence for increased risks for cancer from modern hair dyes use is limited and inconsistent. Some studies have indicated that people who used hair dyes had an increased risk for bladder and breast cancer, as well as cancers of the blood and bone marrow (such as non-Hodgkin lymphoma and leukemia), while other studies have not. Based on its review of the evidence, the Working Group of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) concluded that personal use of hair dyes is “not classifiable” as cancer-causing to humans. So it is still unclear if personal use of hair dyes can increase your risk for cancer. If you would like to learn more about hair dye and health risks, the Outreach and Information Center of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition has information about hair dyes and how they are regulated. Visit http://www.fda.gov/Food/default.htm (search term: hair dye).

Hair Straightening: If you or your stylist uses hair smoothing or straightening products keep in mind that some of these products contain formaldehyde. Although formaldehyde is naturally occurring and is also used widely in many consumer products, this chemical is a known human carcinogen (cancer-causing substance) and can also cause skin irritation and sensitization. People can be exposed to formaldehyde in the workplace and in their home environment, but the highest levels are found in work settings where formaldehyde is produced or used. In a salon, formaldehyde levels are elevated when formaldehyde-containing products are being applied, but they quickly return to a lower level. Remember that although your cancer risk from these hair products may be low, both hair dyes and straightening products contain chemicals that can hurt your skin, hair, and eyes especially if you are not careful or do not use them as intended. To learn more about the short-term and long-term risks of formaldehyde, visit www.cancer.gov (search term: formaldehyde).

Nail Products: When you head in for a manicure and you see the manicurist wearing a dust mask, you may have wondered about your own safety too. Nail salon workers wear dust masks to minimize breathing in dust particles when filing or shaping artificial nail enhancements. Dust masks are intended to prevent inhalation of dust, but they do not protect against inhalation of chemicals. Professional nail care products are typically formulated to minimize exposure to hazardous chemicals that may cause adverse health effects. However, overexposure may occur and could result in skin irritation, allergic reaction, or serious eye injury. If you work at a nail salon, own a salon, or just want to learn more, check out the publication Protecting the Health of Nail Salon Workers by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The publication helps workers understand product ingredients and how to prevent overexposure to those that present potential health risks. As with any cosmetic product that may be hazardous if misused, you should read labels of nail products carefully and heed any warnings. But as far as cancer is concerned, there is no known risk associated with using nail products. To read more about safety information for nail products, visit www.fda.gov (search term: nail products).

Lipstick: Some of the natural colors used in lipstick contain trace amounts of lead. The National Toxicology Program (NTP) of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences of the National Institutes of Health says that lead and lead products are “reasonably anticipated to be human carcinogens.” However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has assessed the potential for harm to consumers from use of lipstick containing lead and determined that there is no safety concern because lipstick is intended for topical use and is only ingested incidentally and in small quantities. Always use your lipstick only as directed and keep the products away from children. Visit www.fda.gov (search term: lipstick) for more.

With all the news coverage out there claiming this product or that product may cause cancer, it sometimes may be hard to figure out what’s safe, what’s hazardous, and what’s plain, old sensationalized. One way to minimize the damage and fear caused by misinformation is to identify respected sources—such as the National Cancer Institute (www.cancer.gov) or Food and Drug Administration—and use them as primary resources for your health information. Knowing the facts is one way to keep your beauty routine good-looking inside and out.
