The dead parrot sketch, which first aired on 7 December 1969 (45 years ago) and featured John Cleese and Michael Palin, has been voted the nation’s favourite Monty Python sketch of all time.
The survey of 2,000 British adults was commissioned to mark the screening of the very last Monty Python live show on TV channel Gold on Sunday 20th July, and asked respondents to select their top sketch from a long list of over 35 iconic scenes.
The pet shop scene, which features Cleese as an exasperated customer trying to get his money back from Palin, who is a stubborn pet salesman, has been voted the most popular Python moment by 45% of respondents. In second place is The Lumberjack Song, which was released as a single in 1975 (28%). The top three is completed by The Ministry of Silly Walks (23%).
The nation’s favourite top ten Monty Python sketches
Just missing out on the top ten were the Silly Olympics, Hell’s Grannies and Gay Policemen (all with 6%).
The findings also reveal some interesting regional differences with Londoners the most likely to find Monty Python funny (81%), compared with those in the North East (69%). There was a surge of popularity for the Dead Parrot sketch in the East Midlands with over half (55%) voting it their top Python moment, compared to the national average of 45%. The Lumberjack Song was particularly popular in Northern Ireland (33%) and Scotland (34%), compared with a national average of 28%. While those living in East Anglia (28%) and Wales (27%) were particularly tickled by The Ministry for Silly Walks (compared with the national average of 23%).
Steve North, General Manager of Gold says, “It’s clear from our research that Monty Python has crossed the generations, 45 years on from the very first series. We’re honoured to be broadcasting the final Monty Python Live (mostly): stage show on our channel so that fans at home can be part of the last ever performance from the most iconic group of comedians in the world.”
This will be the weirdest, and possibly funniest, thing you will see all day: Jimmy Fallon and Terry Crews performing a shirtless duet of Ebony and Ivory on yesterday’s Tonight Show. Fallon loves to lip synch and it seemed they could not pass up the opportunity to get the Brooklyn Nine-Nine star shirtless for a different take on it.
We laughed all the way through the trailer for Sex Tape, the new film from Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel. Beware of the cloud, that’s all we’re saying.
“It went up to the cloud!” “And you can’t get it down from the cloud?” “Nobody understands the cloud! It’s a f—ing mystery!”
The Bad Teacher co-stars have reunited in this raunchy summer comedy, about a married couple whose spice up their sex life by making a sex tape and then accidentally share it via the cloud.
Sex Tape is in cinemas July 25.

We are a fan of President Obama here at Frost and we particularly enjoyed this interview the President did with Ryan Seacrest. In it he talks about his “Between Two Ferns” interview with Zach Galifianakis. Apparently, Zach was nervous and President Obama had not even heard of “Between Two Ferns” but his daughters had and were excited.
“Zach actually was pretty nervous, It was funny to watch because this whole ‘Between Two Ferns’ schtick — which I wasn’t familiar with before my staff told me that we had been pitched to do this — his whole character is to go after the guest, and I think he was looking around and seeing all these Secret Service guys with guns and thinking, ‘I wonder what happens here if I cross the line?’ But we had a great time.”
The interview was done to encourage young people to sign up for health care via HealthCare.gov. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services the website saw a 40 percent boost in traffic after the interview.
“And as I said, I wasn’t familiar with this thing, but when I was at the dinner table with the girls and I said, ‘Well today I did something with Zach, it’s called ‘Two Ferns,’ I think,’ Malia was so excited, She had seen all the previous episodes, so I figured it was going to reach our target audience, which is a lot of young people, and it turns out we’ve had close to 15 million hits. And the amazing thing is afterwards people actually did link to healthcare.gov and people actually signed up for health insurance, so it ended up working, but I think I have to keep my day job.”
