Divine Chocolate & Christian Aid launch their 15th annual Poetry Competition for children

poetry competition, childrenDivine Chocolate, the Fairtrade and farmer-owned chocolate company, has launched its 15th annual national Poetry Competition in partnership with Christian Aid. The poetry competition aims to take young people on a voyage of discovery about the world of chocolate, cocoa farmers and Fairtrade, firing their imaginations and encouraging their creativity.

The theme for 2017’s competition is ‘Sharing tastes Divine’, encouraging entrants to think about the joy of tasting and sharing chocolate with friends, and the fair price and a share of the profits farmers receive too.

Leading the judging panel is Laura Dockrill, author of the Darcy Burdock book series and a young and talented performance poet, author/ illustrator and short story writer.

Laura says; “I adore original writing. I look for poems that take brave risks, where an idea jumps off the page and is explored through beautiful language, description and form. Poems that come from the heart, that are full of feeling. I feel so privileged to be reading new work for the Divine Chocolate & Christian Aid Poetry Competition and can’t wait to read the submissions with a lovely cup of tea!”

Leading the judging for the Welsh language panel is Anni Llŷn, Children’s Poet Laureate for Wales.

As well as cherishing chocolate, the competition encourages young people to develop a greater understanding of where their food comes from, the people behind it and the potential challenges facing our food industry. Educational resources are available from Trading Visions, the sister charity of Divine Chocolate including lesson plans, videos and more, including a day in the life of Raphael, the son of a cocoa farmer in Ghana.

The winners of the competition will be announced and read by Laura on Divine Chocolate’s YouTube channel after the closing date of the competition.

Her sassy and unique way with words has captivated audiences everywhere from gigs and festivals including Glastonbury and Latitude, to radio and TV programs such as Woman’s Hour, Newsnight and BBC breakfast. Torbay Poetry Festival 2016 Competition. £700 1st Prize

As Frost Magazine readers know, we are always supportive of writing events, and here’s one for all the poets out there.

 

Torbay Poetry Festival 2016 Poetry Competition is open for entries now. Poems submitted must be original, unpublished and not accepted for publication. They should be written in English and not exceed 50 lines. To give you an idea of the standard, please take a look at John Greening’s report on the Torbay Poetry Festival Competition Winners 2015 on the Torbay Poets Website website. All entries must be received by 6.00pm on 28th August 2016. Very best of luck!

 

Judging

 

Sue Boyle won The Poetry Business pamphlet competition in 2010 with Too Late for the Love Hotel and has a poem in The Forward Poems of the Decade, 2011. Her book Report from the Judenplatz was performed in full at the Torbay Festival of Poetry in 2014. Her first full collection, Safe Passage from Oversteps, came out last year.

 

Sue runs regular Writing Days for the Bath Poetry Cafe and organised the Cafe’s Short Poem Competition in 2015. Her wordpress site Sue Boyle features the ongoing story of last year’s Cafe Competition, with reviews of many of the successful poems and helpful insights from the twelve experienced Cafe judges for competition poets who aspire to win.

 

Prizes

£700 FIRST PRIZE, plus free weekend at the poetry festival, (27th – 31st Oct 2016), including accommodation and Festival Pass.

£400 second prize plus a free Festival Pass.

£200 third prize plus ticket for the Festival supper for two.

ENTRANCE FEE:  £5 per poem or 5 poems for £20 for entries received by post. Online entries are £5 each because of additional admin costs in time and printing.

Closing date:  August 28th 2016

Submissions Now Open For The 9th Luke Bitmead Writer’s Bursary

writing competitions, writing, competitions, novel, novel writingWe know a lot of writers read Frost so we wanted to bring this great competition to your attention. Submissions for the 2016 Luke Bitmead Writer’s Bursary are now open.

The award was set up shortly after Luke’s death in 2006 by his family to support and encourage the work of fledgling novel writers and the Bursary is now the UK’s biggest award for unpublished authors. The top prize is a publishing contract with Legend Press and a £2,500 cash prize.

Luke Bitmead was the first novelist to be published by Legend Press, his novel White Summer was released in 2006 shortly before his death. Two novels have been published posthumously – The Body is a Temple and Heading South (co-authored by Catherine Richards). Information about Luke can be found at www.lukebitmead.com.
This fantastic bursary for a ninth year, and hope to continue the success of our previous winners Andrew Blackman (On the Holloway Road), Ruth Dugdall (The Woman Before Me), Sophie Duffy (The Generation Game), J.R.
