CHARITY GETTING DISABLED KIDS DANCING DURING LOCKDOWN

  • Virtual classes are designed not only for fun and fitness, but also to tackle loneliness and isolation
  • Their dance classes benefit 3,000 children each year

UK charity for disabled children has produced a one of a kind series of virtual dance classes for children of all abilities, but especially aimed at those with conditions like autism, cerebral palsy, profound and multiple learning disabilities and physical impairments. Pirouetting in the footsteps of Joe Wicks, UK charity Flamingo Chicks is launching Makaton-signed and subtitled online dance classes that disabled children can do with their siblings and carers.

These unique online classes are suitable for children with a wide variety of needs, including those with complex medical needs or life limiting conditions as well as children with learning disabilities, autism, physical impairments, and children without additional needs. As in all Flamingo Chicks classes, adaptations are provided throughout, including ways parents and carers can support children with limited mobility, and ways to translate different ballet and dance movements.

Filmed using green screens with animated backgrounds, the classes not only get kids moving but immerse children in a magical world of storytelling, characterization, and music and come complete with Makaton for further accessibility.

Flamingo Chicks have even got volunteer celebrities on board to help young minds keep active, alert and engaged. These celebs have written new stories with the themes of dance and inclusion that will be illustrated and read aloud by a famous face. First up is Julie Hesmondhalgh (Coronation Street’s Hayley Cropper) reading ‘Ozi Seven Legs’!

Even in normal circumstances, life with a disabled child can be an isolating experience – a study revealed that, before the Coronavirus pandemic, two thirds (65%) of parents already reported feelings of isolation. Limited social interaction can be due to work, lack of time and money to do activities other families take for granted, fear of people’s reactions to their child.

However, the lockdown is creating new challenges for families with a disabled child. The lack of  routine, the uncertainty and the added anxiety parents are experiencing about their disabled children’s vulnerability means social isolation is an even greater challenge. Many kids will no longer be getting their usual visits from their care teams, such as their physiotherapist or mental health professionals, and as a result may be showing extreme anxiety or behaviour changes.

The virtual classes are one of a number of resources created by the charity that also campaigns for a fair future for disabled children and their families and provides a peer support network for parents and carers.

 

Not only will they encourage dance through their online classes – the first with a SPACE theme filmed using animated green-screen technology and signed with Makaton – but the charity will also offer activities for little scientists and crafters, guided meditation and relaxation videos for parents/carers, ‘smile calls’ via video chat to provide those much needed boosts and a variety of other online resources.

Michael Flatley talks to Vicky Edwards about his farewell tour, dancing in paint and the bliss of brunch

To call a Michael Flatley production a dance show is to undersell it on an epic scale. With more explosive thrills than a bottle of Moet uncorked on a roller coaster, The Lord of the Dance can never stand accused of failing to give value for money.

His latest show, Dangerous Games, is no exception. Complete with a new score by Gerard Fahy, audiences can expect everything from breath-taking special effects and ground-breaking technology to robots, world champion acrobats, unicorns and of course some of the most exceptional dancers on the planet. A dance show? Nah, this is a theatrical extravaganza. With bells on.

“And it’s a family show, too,” says Michael, his soft and melodic Irish-American tones somehow at odds with someone who holds the world record for slamming his foot onto a stage to make the most taps (an incredible 35) in a second.

And for Michael it is the audience’s response that is especially gratifying.

“People of all ages feel uplifted and happy after they have seen it and to transport people and fill them with joy is our whole goal,” says Michael, who began his career with Irish folk band The Chieftains in 1994. Going on to change the face of Irish Dance forever by incorporating upper body movement into his awe-inspiring creation Riverdance, in 1996 he topped the seemingly un-toppable with Lord of the Dance.

But with Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games marking Michael’s farewell performances (his body simply can’t withstand the intense challenges that his shows demand any longer) is there, I enquire, a sense of loss?

“I am sure I will miss dancing,” he concedes, “but I’ve always been the creator and the choreographer and my dream going forwards is to bring new talent through and give them the chance to shine like the stars they are.”

Having returned to London, to the Dominion Theatre, in March, having sold out at the Palladium last year, Dangerous Games is touring some of the country’s biggest venues, concluding at the Wembley Arena on 4 July before embarking on a world tour. Michael, who is appearing on only a handful of the UK dates, is urging people to come and see the new ‘Lords,’ reassuring fans that they will not be disappointed and that his involvement in the creative aspects of the Lord of the Dance brand remains absolute.

Of his team of dancers, many of whom have been with him since his Riverdance days, Michael is fulsome in his praise. Highlighting the particular talents of James Keegan, Matt Smith, Morgan Comer, and Zoltan Papp “it’s a show I can be proud of,” he says, clearly relishing his role as mentor and teacher.

“It’s incredibly satisfying and rewarding,” he agrees, a note of excitement creeping into the gentle lilt. “It’s wonderful to see dancers fulfilling their potential and reaching for the stars.”

But while his protégés are reaching for the stars someone has to come up with the ideas and choreography. Where does Michael draw inspiration from?

“I think if you really want to create something special then you have to go deep inside of yourself. But you have to work for it; it won’t be given to you.”

His work ethic has roots and Michael needs no prompting to identify them. “He was my hero,” he says quietly, referring to his much-loved father who died only recently.

“He was such a hardworking and driven man. He wouldn’t let negativity into his head. As young men my brothers and I worked with him on construction sites and digging ditches and from him we learned self-discipline and the importance of doing things properly. He taught us to be the one who set the pace rather than the one who followed it.”

But even though he is giving up performing, Michael isn’t hanging up his dance shoes entirely.

“I became fascinated by the great painters who went before us. Once they painted a work it was there forever. With my art I had to paint it, live, every night. And it had to be perfect every night. I dreamed that there was a way that I could turn that whole 3D experience into a 2D image that would last forever.”

It was a problem that needed considerable pondering, but in 2005 he sussed it. Having longed to dance at Madison Square Gardens, where all his boxing heroes had fought, Michael proceeded to sell out at the 18,000-seat venue – unheard of for a dance show. Afterwards he received a framed cut-out of the vinyl flooring that had been covering the trap door on the stage, complete with scuff marks from his taps. A memento of his realised dream, the surprise gift gave Michael the answer to his dilemma.

“I’m a great fan of abstract expressionism and so I went into a studio, put vinyl on the floor and a little paint on my shoes and danced. Then I started throwing paint because I refuse to be just held to the one thing.”

Enjoying considerable success with what he self-deprecatingly calls ‘my last efforts,’ in June he will see his first exhibition unveiled.

“It’s my new passion and I just love it,” he says, with gleeful enthusiasm.

But not even painting comes close to his real passion. Married to his former leading lady Niamh O’Brien, with whom he has an eight-year-old son, for the man who has made millions family time is the most priceless thing in his world.

“For me real happiness is Sunday brunch in London with my beautiful wife and son. I leave the phone at home and we walk in the park, laughing and talking, and it’s just perfect.”

He will always be the Lord of the Dance to his legions of fans, but there’s a whole lot more to Michael Flatley. As warm, funny and charming as he is talented, driven and smart, the Lord is also an absolute gentleman.

Bio:
The Devine Xperience is a live music act that plays a unique blend of electronic dance music with elements ofbreakbeat, dubstep, trap, and trance. Their music has been described as timeless by music critics that have tried to categorize it. Robert Devine creates and records the music. Vanessa Garic is the Creative Director guiding the artistic and visual aspects of the group also lending her skills as a live performer. Enki Siruz is the audio engineer and is responsible for adding the polish andsparkle to the music and is also featured as a live performer.

Robert Jaros AKA Robert Devine began playing the piano at the age of 5, then in junior high school he started to play the drums and percussion then he moved on to the guitar and bass in high school. Robert’s first live performances were with various punk bands that he played either the guitar, bass, or sang in during his high school years, in 1992 he attended what he believed to be a Deee Lite concert but it was actually very much more. This was the first Rave party that Robert had ever attended, that night he witnessed the Rabbit in the Moon performing live and it changed his life forever…. He immediately acquired a Roland XP-80 synthesizer and began work on what would become his passion in life, producing music. Throughout the 90’s Robert produced and performed Breakbeat, Drum & Bass, and HouseMusic Live P.A. Shows in the Southeast Rave Scene under the name of The Devine X-Perience while concurrently MC’ing at various parties. Then in the early 2000’s he began producing Hip Hop for various Artists all over the US and opening for various artists such as Lil Wayne, Young Dro, Cashis, D4L, Pastor Troy, and Lil Jon and the Eastside Boyz and others of that caliber while continuing to develop what would become The DevineXperience on the side during what little free time he had. Robert has put his blood, sweat, and tears into this album that he has been recording during the past 6 years, Robert is a raver to the core and Believes in Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect as his guiding principles in life. Vanessa Garic’s passion for artistry lead to her interest in makeup, special effects, and fashion. She attended Sunset Gower Studios Makeup Academy in Hollywood and later became a personnel stylist for Louis Vuitton in Beverly Hills, California. Assisting many of her loyal clients in the luxury of their homes, she helped build their wardrobes; also gaining long lasting relationships.

She later moved into the world of Haute Joaillerie, studying gemstones and providing buying advice to consumers for Chopard, the Swiss based luxury jeweler. Working in collaboration with Hollywood industry events, she worked with stylist dressing several people, often hand delivering a selection of jewels to choose from.

She has a passion for painting and the visual arts and she continues to paint, which had always been close to her heart.
Music and painting have always fueled her energy for finding ways to create new and exciting experiences, which she definitely has delivered with her contributions to this project. Some of her favorite musical influences are New Order, Elliot Smith, DJ Keoki, The DandyWarhols, Brian Johnstown Massacre, Coco Rosie, and The Breeders.

Enki Siruz was born in Los Angeles California and was raised in the San Fernando Valley. He grew up listening to a variety of musical influences such as the Doors, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, Sublime, and Nirvana. He loves to watch live performances and is always attending various music events. He is a graduate of Musicians Institute in the Audio Engineering Program. His goal is to make some of the best sounding, high quality albums the world has ever heard by infusing different music genres to create Amazing Sounding Projects.

Love in the Club? Dancefloor Dos and Don’ts

You’re all dressed up in your hottest clubwear ready to take the dancefloor by storm. However, before you get too carried away there are a few dos and don’ts you need to be aware of. There are a huge number of mistakes you can make as you prepare to hit it up and show the club what you’re made of. If you want to avoid potential embarrassment, you’ll need to follow the tips below.

Don’t take up too much space

One thing you’ll notice about club dancefloors is the fact they can become a little crowded. This leaves you with very little space to show off your moves. Now may not be the best time to break out your famous ‘robot’ dance. Ensure you respect the space limitations around you.

Do expect a little bump or two

After one or two drinks, you’re likely to be a little unsteady on your heels. You need to be aware that the other people around you are also in the same position. If somebody bumps into you, try to be polite rather than hostile. Of course, if they’re constantly bumping into you without even a hint of ‘I’m sorry’, there’s justified reason to be annoyed. Likewise, if you’re the one doing the bumping, make sure you apologise and then make a huge effort to control your unsteady pins.

Don’t be self-righteous

You’re going to come across people who test your personal beliefs and lifestyle choices on the dancefloor. According to The Guardian you need to learn to suck it up. Sure the club may say no smoking and there may be one or two people ignoring that particular rule, but you’re not working for the nightclub. Nobody likes a self-righteous person trying to ruin their fun on the dancefloor. Learn to ignore it and just focus on enjoying yourself.

Don’t update your social networking page

The dancefloor is never a place for social networking. If you’re having such an amazing time, why are you on your phone? Put your phone away and do what the dancefloor is designed to be used for – dancing!

Don’t force yourself onto somebody who clearly isn’t interested

Yes you may look hot in your sexy little outfit, but that doesn’t mean everybody will want to dance with you. If someone is clearly not interested, don’t waste your time trying to change their mind.

Don’t attempt a dirty dancing lift

We’ve all seen the film, well most of us anyway. The famous lift scene in dirty dancing is inspiring and incredibly romantic. However, under no circumstances should it ever be attempted in a club. Unless you’ve had specific training with a partner, the dancefloor isn’t the place to be attempting this daring lift unless you fancy a broken ankle.

Do stick to what you know

Are you thinking of experimenting with a few new moves? Don’t! Stick to a routine you know and love and remember to also stick within the set space boundaries. Attempting something completely different could leave you completely shamefaced.

London’s iconic Ministry of Sound will play host to the first ever Car Boot Disco on 24th November. The Sunday afternoon Ministry party combines music, fashion and swapping to encourage young people to update their wardrobe by exchanging and customising clothes instead of spending on fast fashion.

The event launches vInspired’s Get Trashed campaign to save over 10,000 clothes from landfill before the end of the year. It will create a tribe of young people dedicated to re-using, recycling and having fun – whilst looking good at the same time. Young people will feel part of a movement, putting the issue of waste front of mind – empowering them to run their own events and spread the message via the Do Something channels, social media and word-of-mouth.

This free party is aimed at young people in London who are bored with their wardrobes and want a fresh update, but without the cost. vInspired is inviting anyone with swap-able clothes to come along to the event and take home something that is new to them but unwanted by someone else.

Rising fashion designers will be on hand, hosting special areas of the super-club to provide unique professional customisation like studding, badging and ripping – ‘pimping’ up tired looking items. Fashion scouts will be attending the Ministry of Sound event, looking for potential models who can rock any outfit – old or new – making this the perfect chance to showcase individual style.

Spinning the perfect soundtrack to for a Sunday afternoon session will be some of the very best DJs from the UK’s dance music scene who will be hitting the decks for the duration of the event. Remixing music alongside the remixed fashion.

Drinkers will be confessing their sins after delving into the Guilty Pleasures themed cocktails which include the Chocolate Mint Pleasure, a playful blend of Vanilla Stolichnaya Vodka, Cacao White, Crème de Menthe, Milk and Chocolate Sprinkles. Pop princesses can opt for the Sassy Spritz, a zingy mix of Aperol, Prosecco, and Soda. The Retro Mai Tai will transport guests back to the last days of disco and will combine Santa Teresa Rum, Triple Sec, Captain Morgan, Pineapple, Orange Juice and Grenadine

Owned and operated by The Mint Group, Mary Janes is a chic bar with an interior combining a touch of the baroque with modern elegance. Plush Louis XVI style chairs, crystal chandeliers and red drapes lend a sense of theatre to the venue, whilst downstairs exposed brickwork, leather banquettes and a long wooden and zinc-topped bar create a more contemporary space. The bar has several intimate spaces perfect for group bookings, as well as the ever-popular karaoke room which can take bookings for up to 12 people.
