The Hunger Games Live Reaping, Win Tickets To Premiere

THE O2 ARENA HOSTS A FAN SCREENING OF THE 15 CERTIFICATE VERSION OF THE HUNGER GAMES AND LIVE REAPING ON TOP OF THE O2!

LET THE GAMES BEGIN…. Monday 3rd September sees the release of the phenomenally successful film, The Hunger Games on 2-disc DVD, 2-disc Blu-Ray, TVOD and digital download formats

To open the celebrations, last night London’s O2 Arena played host to a very exciting event to celebrate the release of Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games this coming Monday. Fans were treated to an exclusive screening of the 15 certificate version of the movie, previously not screened in the UK, hosted by friends of Panem and top UK entertainment site Digital Spy. To let fans get even closer to the action and really fill the shoes of Katniss Everdeen the screening was hosted at Cineworld at the O2’s D-Box theatre so attendees could feel every heart-wrenching moment of the games!

As well as the chance for fans to see the 15 certificate of the hit film, 12 lucky competition winners, our very own Tributes, also had the amazing opportunity to ascend the O2 to take part in a live reaping on top of the Arena itself. Our winning tribute Ryan Crane from Leytonstone, London, received a pair of tickets to the World Premiere of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire for his bravery and courage in scaling the famous London structure! Our plucky winner said: “The event was brilliant, it was really windy when we got to the top and really dramatic. I’m so excited to be going to the world premier, it was so unexpected. I dorkily hugged the guy when I won, it was quite embarrassing!”

FANS OF THE HUNGER GAMES URGED TO ‘CHECK-IN’ AT HMV STORES FOR THE CHANCE TO WIN BIG!
  • 12 HMV stores to host a ‘Live Reaping’ on Sunday 2nd September to celebrate the DVD, Blu-ray and Digital Download release of The Hunger Games.
  • Fans checking-in via Foursquare have a chance to win prizes and a pair of tickets to the UK premiere of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
  • Culminating in national ‘Capitol’ live reaping at 3pm

To celebrate the release of the phenomenally successful film, The Hunger Games on 2-disc DVD, 2-disc Blu-Ray, TVOD and digital download formats

In tribute to the science fiction blockbuster, twelve HMV stores around the UK and Ireland have been selected to act as special regional ‘districts’ on Sunday, 2nd September – the day before release.

Fans of The Hunger Games who visit one of the 12 participating stores on Sunday 2nd between 2pm and 3pm can check into the applicable HMV store’s Foursquare account. They will then be automatically entered into a regional ‘Reaping’ whereby two names or ‘Tributes’ from each District will be put forward for a very special Reaping taking place in ‘The Capitol’ the same day – at HMV’s Flagship Oxford Street store.

In the Oxford Street store, a ‘Capitol Representative’ will conduct a live Reaping after 3pm. They will select names from two fish bowls, just like in the film. The first name will be taken from a bowl holding the names of the 24 Regional District winners.  The second name will be taken from a bowl holding all the names of attendees at Oxford Street branch. These two lucky Tributes will each win a pair or tickets to UK premiere of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire – the next instalment of the series.

Although only a select few can be chosen as Tributes to battle for the ultimate prize, 100 lucky attendees at each store will have the opportunity to purchase the HMV exclusive 3 disc double play steelbook a full day ahead of the national release. In additional the 24 regional tributes will each receive a The Hunger Games goody bag.

Edinburgh Festival Preview

I sit down to write this preview in the full knowledge that my opinion is in no way important. I am therefore one of the more honest reviewers you will find on the internet. I am here to tell you about an awesome show that is coming to Edinburgh this year called “James & Amy: Dysfunctional Legends” and stars the amazing comedic talents of James Loveridge and Amy Howerska. The show will take place at the Jekyll & Hyde, Venue 249, 112 Hanover Street in Edinburgh and the show takes place from 10:35pm to 11:35pm. For tickets you can call the venue on 0131 255 2022. Now let me tell you why you want to see this show.

Let me tell you all about the two fantastic acts that make up this duo of….some amazing word I can’t think of right now. Or Amy…a..zing even. No? Probably for the best. Let’s start with Amy Howerska. I could spend ages telling you about her many competition accomplishments like being a finalist in the 2011 Up The Creek one to watch or a Semi finalist in the Leicester square New Act of the Year or how she won the 2012 award for welsh wizardry. I might have made the last one up. I could tell you how she’s been a promo writer for Law & Order, House and Burn Notice. And no Burn Notice was a real show I didn’t make that one up. Google it. I could quote reviews that say things like ”Charming Welsh live wire” London Is funny or “Witty and intelligent observational humour, beautifully delivered.” Creative Cows Comedy Club or “man she is so awesome her stuff is so clever I really enjoyed that” which was said by…hold on just let me check…that was said by….oh yeah that was me. Amy Howerska is as funny as she is smart and is as smart as she is beautiful and is as beautiful as she is funny. I think I’ve made my point. Now to the second part of duo who is in no way Robin to her Batman. Why would anyone even bring that up? That’s a ridiculous thing to say. James Loveridge is not Robin. I’ll tell you all about him now ok if you can stop labelling him as the sidekick. Good.

James Loveridge is a comedian and because I am lazy I am just going to quote from his comedy CV “In his first year he made the Semi-Final of ‘So You Think You’re Funny?’, won The Comedy Cafe New Act Night on his first attempt as well as beating the King Gong at The Comedy Store in Leicester Square. He is the resident compere of The Lions Den Comedy Club in Piccadilly and his debut Edinburgh show ‘James Loveridge and Other Losers’ was met with excellent reviews.” I would be a terrible journalist/writer, which is what I am but still, if I didn’t quote one of those reviews “James is an animated story teller; an entertainer. His jokes and asides are self-deprecating and sharp, and delivered in such a manner that makes it difficult not to laugh along.” and that review comes from www.edfringereview.com. James Loveridge is a winner, James Loveridge is a man who beat up King Gong and took it’s lunch money, James Loveridge is a man who taught himself how to do a handstand. This is not relevant to his comedy but it is a bit of trivia I know about him. James Loveridge is a name I like to say and a name I like to type. It sounds like the online handle of someone who is way too into Klingons. But that’s not important and I don’t think my private life has anything to do with this.

I should talk about the show now. But I’m not going too. That’s what kind of crazy, maverick previewer I am. I’m just going to tell you to see it. If I talk about it I might spoil it and I do not want to do that. I can say that it rocks like that boat but is in no way rubbish like that film about said boat that was rocking. If you are going to Edinburgh then you must go and see it. However if you are not going to that place at that time then I have another suggestion for you lovely people.

You can see their awesome show in London before it hits Edinburgh. How is this crazy yet amy…a..zing piece of news possible I hear no one ask? Well I will tell no one. I will leave the final words on the matter to laziness and quote the “about Dysfunctional Legends” section from the above link “James Loveridge and Amy Howerska, have tried to be good humans…but have failed- excellently. Join them in their celebration of breathtaking ineptitude, because you too could be a dysfunctional legend!” and if that doesn’t make you want to see this show then you’re not a legend and you never will be.

Matt Norris & The Moon – This Kingdom EP | Music Review

Matt Norris & The Moon formed back in 2009 from the ashes of various other bands, having met at various open mic nights on the burgeoning Edinburgh folk scene. The band have spent the last couple of years honing their sound, played some pretty big support slots (including the mighty Primal Scream) and gained plenty of attention from both the press and radio stations.

This four song EP is sure to gain them even more followers. The release begins with ‘Roots Below’ which begins with strum-strum campfire guitars with solemn trumpeting over the top before building to a rousing folk-pop chorus with a trumpet hook catchier than an STI on a holiday to Magaluf.

‘Eyes of a Storm’ is a more laid-back number, begins with the campfire guitars and really stays there, adding accordian to create a warmer, oakier folk sound. ‘Shadow from the Sun’ has a more urgent pop sound with a nice bit of flute joining the party, sounding like a band driven by something. ‘The Shallows’ wraps things up nicely with more campfire strumming, value-added stings with a five party harmony of detuned opera singing (opera music’s just vowels, right?).

 

 

On the evidence of this EP MN&TM are a band to watch. Their sound is an enchanting mix of big hooks and bigger harmonies coupled with an impressive array of instruments. For fans of Fleet Foxes, First Aid Kit and Mumford & Sons this is a band for you. Watch them explode.

Reel Syria Film Festival 2012

Following the successful REEL FESTIVALS 2011: SYRIA, LEBANON, SCOTLAND – a trilateral exchange of contemporary music, film and literature from Syria, Lebanon and Scotland, Reel Festivals returns for its fifth year with Reel Syria 2012, in association with Mosaic Initiative for Syria, supporting Syrian artists and showcasing Syrian culture to a UK audience.

At a time when Syria is engulfed in violent conflict, the festival will present a nuanced portrait of the country and its people. On the anniversary of the uprising, Mosaic Initiative for Syria will also raise funds for Syrians displaced and affected by the current violent crackdown.

Highlights of the festival include a performance of Score 328: SURROUND by ‘The 17’ an international public performance project conceived by artist/author/musician Bill Drummond (KLF). A Syrian film programme by DoxBox including a screening of ‘A Flood in Ba’ath Country’ directed by the late, celebrated Syrian documentary maker Omar Amiralay, an evening panel discussion on creative resistance with guests, including Asian Dub Foundation’s Steve Chandra Savale, Syrian novelists Manhal Alsarraj and Mamdouh Azzam, and other participants TBC. There will also be a fundraising Syrian-style bazaar at Kensington Town Hall.

A major fundraising music concert is scheduled, but at time of going to press, details are still being confirmed. More information will follow shortly

DoxBox is Syria’s only independent documentary film festival and has hosted guests such as D.A. Pennebaker, Kim Longinotto, Mark Isaacs and many more. In 2012 it will take place in exile, with a programme of Syrian documentary film. The film aspect of Reel Syria will come from DoxBox.
Reem Ali is one of Syria’s best known contemporary actresses. She is the director of ‘Zabad’, a 2006 searing critique of the Assad regime, subsequently banned in Syria; it premiered at Reel Festivals 2011.

Manhal Alsarraj is an award winning Syrian author. She has published a number of books including Overcoming The Bridge (1997) and As Should Be For The River (2000), which was banned from publication in Syria due to its political connotations. Her most recent novel On My Chest (2007) was published by Cadmus books in Damascus in 2007.

Mamdouh Azzam, is a Syrian novelist, whose works are a damning portrait of life under a dictatorship, as well as being beautiful works of literature. His novel Rain Palace was banned by the Ministry of Culture for religious/political reasons and his latest novel, Women of the Imagination, is a story of a book-obsessed teacher living under the Baathist regime

Steve Chandra Savale, also known by his stage names Chandrasonic and best known for his punk rave aesthetic as the guitarist for the ground-breaking British band Asian Dub Foundation. In 2009, He presented a series of documentaries for Al-Jazeera English called Music of Resistance.

Donatella Della Ratta is an academic specializing in the study of Syrian cultural production at the University of Copenhagen. Author of several articles for leading scholarly journals, she focuses on culture of resistance in Syria and its implications.

Bill Drummond has been the bestselling musician in the world, burnt £1,000,000 as a work of performance art and written a manual on how to have a number one record. His energies are now focused on a choir called The17 and he will be presenting a piece made to take place in Syria during the festival. http://www.the17.org/scores/328,

Royal Wedding: Zara Phillips Marries Mike Tindall

You wait years for a Royal Wedding and two come along at once. Zara Phillips has married Mike Tindall at a lavish palace reception.

The Queen’s granddaughter married in a private ceremony in Edinburgh’s Canongate Kirk with the Queen, Kate Middleton and Prince William in attendance. The Duchess of Cambridge also accompanied her husband, and while this wedding didn’t have the scale of Westminster Abbey, more than 6,000 people turned up to watch sports star Tindall marry into the monarchy, including England coach Martin Johnson, his predecessor Sir Clive Woodward, Scotland’s coach Andy Robinson, Lawrence Dallaglio and Jonny Wilkinson.

For the fashionistas, Zara’s dress was created by the Queen’s favourite designer, Stewart Parvin, and the bride paid tribute to Scotland with thistles incorporated into her bouquet of white blooms.

The wedding reception is being staged in the grounds of Holyroodhouse, but their honeymoon is postponed as the newlyweds will be back at training this week. Zara, 30, will be competing in the Gatcombe Park horse trials, and Tindall, 32, is likely to play in the England rugby match against Wales next Saturday.
