The Business of Books: Fresh Endeavours 

Jane Cable talks to former publishing director of Endeavour Press, Amy Durant, at the start of her freelance career

1) What is your book related job or business?

Until earlier this month I was Publishing Director of Endeavour Press, but I have just left to move into freelance work, specifically in editorial and consultancy. I have worked in digital publishing for four years, and manage everything from commissioning new titles to overseeing marketing campaigns.
2) What is the most rewarding part of it?

The most rewarding part of my job is finding and falling in love with a book, and then getting to meet the author and sharing my enthusiasm. Seeing a book grow from a submission to a published book; and working with the author on everything from edits to cover ideas to a new title is so much fun! We also worked with a lot of estates at Endeavour Press, and it was great
when you get in contact with the family of an author whose books have gone out of print, and you get them selling again – it is really rewarding to keep an author’s legacy going strong.
3) What do you consider to be your major successes?

I recently got shortlisted for the Kim Scott Walwyn Award for exceptional women in publishing, which was a great honour and personal success, and I feel privileged to have been on the same shortlist as so many inspirational women (including the wonderful publisher and editor Alice Curry of Lantana who won!). My major successes at work have been mainly around tracking down obscure literary estates (I have spent many an afternoon stalking unsuspecting relatives of authors on the internet!); signing them up; and injecting new life into the books – transforming them from hard-to-find second-hand copies, to shiny new ebooks, which are reaching a whole new generation of readers.


4) Have you always loved books and what are you reading at the moment?

My father is a writer and he worked in children’s publishing when I was growing up, so I was lucky enough to always have a house full of books! I have a few books on the go at the moment: I have just finished working my way through nearly 100 submissions for the HWA Endeavour Ink Best Historical Novel Award, and at the moment I am reading (and thoroughly enjoying!) The Girl in the Glass Tower by Elizabeth Fremantle; I am also reading The Queen’s Mary by Sarah Gristwood, which will be published as an Endeavour Ink book this summer; and The Power by Naomi Alderman, of which I have heard great things!

The Business of Books: Bursting the Book Bubble

Another You has been on promotion again; partly thanks to Endeavour Press and partly off my own bat. When I heard the price would be dropped to 99p/99c for a good chunk of April in readiness for a Bookbub promotion I thought it would be worthwhile experimenting a bit myself.

I had heard very good things about Kindle Daily Nation (https://kindlenationdaily.com/). Very strong in the US market (where I’m not), they offer a number of sponsorship packages which start from $30 but I opted to splash out on one where Another You would be the only book featured in the mailshot. I’ve often found that the best way to sell my books is to offer a free excerpt and to do this costs $120. I uploaded my details and held my breath. Far from being the impersonal web-based process I expected soon I was receiving friendly emails from the team in New England who designed a great mailshot which showcased my book perfectly.

Did it work? Yes, in that the book shot briefly back up the Amazon.com charts and Endeavour were able to tell me that it sold 26 copies on the day of the promotion. Not nearly enough to pay for it, although more would have sold over the next few days, but overall the increased profile meant the experience was a positive one.

A week or so later Another You was featured on Author Shout’s Cover Wars (http://authorshout.com/cover-wars/). I had applied a few months before so the timing was purely co-incidental and I thought the promotions would bounce off each other well. Any author can apply, but be aware – this competition is far more about social media presence than the cover itself.

I normally work really hard on social media to make the most of every promotion I do and this time I could see it paying off straight away. I shared the link to the voting on the bookish Facebook groups I’m a member of, to my author page and on my personal Facebook account. I tweeted it every day. In Cover Wars you can vote every 24 hours and so many friends and fellow authors rallied around to do this I was knocked out by the support. It was neck and neck until the end, but I realised that the other author vying for top slot was in America so I had a last morning to gather votes before the competition closed. My strategy worked and Another You became Author Shout’s book of the week, featuring on their website and in their own social media. But whether I sold any more copies because of it I can’t really tell.

So on to Bookbub (https://www.bookbub.com/home/). Authors who have been featured rave about it, it isn’t cheap and there is a selection process to go through. Is it worth the hype? The answer is an emphatic yes.

Endeavour booked the promotion for the UK, Canada, Australia and India. It was so effective that within hours I had my first Amazon best-seller label, for 20th century historical romance in Canada. Unlike when the book was available free these were real sales to genuine new customers. A week later the book is still doing pretty well there and in Australia. In the UK it shot up to 400 in the Kindle UK charts and is still selling strongly and in the top 50 for women’s historical fiction.

So, what have I learnt? Strive for the best – save your pennies or beg your publisher and try for a Bookbub slot. And when you do decide on a promotion, harness all your social media resources and work as hard as you can to maximise the impact. Otherwise your time and money are likely to be wasted.

the-business-of-books-interviewswithjanecableSince Another You saw the light of day almost a month ago much of my writing life has been taken over by marketing, interspersed with periods of panic that I’m not marketing enough, or that I’m doing the wrong things. It’s actually very hard to tell what works, however empirical you try to be, so one of my first priorities has been to start the reviews ticking over. That really matters.

Reviews are not all about an ego trip for the author – although I have to say with some of the initial comments about Another You my head could swell more than one hat size. In the cold light of day – rather than the warm glow of knowing someone really loved your book – reviews are about Amazon algorithms. Once you pass a certain number (said to be 50, but for The Faerie Tree it was somewhere in the low 60s) your book will be featured more and more in Amazon customer mailings and suggestions. It’s certainly worth it – I went from selling a few copies of The Faerie Tree each day to selling a thousand or so over a three week period. It just takes a little while – and a lot of work – to get there.

Some lovely reviewers will post on Amazon on the UK, in the US and on Goodreads – as well as their own blogs if they have them. There’s an extra dimension to the Amazon reviews for Another You because for each one in the UK and the US I’m donating £1 to Frost’s favourite charity, Words for the Wounded.

Over the last few years I’ve met some lovely book bloggers online. Most of them have full time jobs and/or are busy mums as well as reading, reviewing and writing and I have a huge admiration for their work rate. I try to be as helpful to them as I can by sharing and tweeting things which I think will be of interest to my followers too and taking part in their special events, so over time relationships build. That means I don’t feel bad about asking if they’ll review Another You or take part in the blog tour but it also means it’s a pleasure to work with them.

Some really go the extra mile, putting together graphics for the book to go with their reviews. Making these graphics – especially useful for saying more in Twitter posts – is something I’ve started to do myself, using a website called Canva. I have no design skills at all but even I can manage to knock up something which looks quite professional. Here’s one I prepared earlier to showcase some review quotes.

Something I haven’t been able to do before is offer a free ebook on Amazon to generate downloads and reviews. On Friday I had an email from Endeavour saying that Another You will be on free promotion from 16th – 20thJanuary. I was really excited by the possibilities but a little phased by the lack of notice. Having canvassed a few writer friends they advised me to get everyone possible to share the news – and the download link – and to look at a few well-chosen free book promotion sites. Sadly most of them need a lead time of at least five days but I have picked three and I’ll let you know well they work in due course.

To end my post with something completely different… I am absolutely made up that my first novel, The Cheesemaker’s House, has been selected by Books on the Underground for 1st February. I really believe in sharing books and this is an amazing way to do it. I’m hugely grateful to the book fairies for allowing me to join the fun.

the-business-of-books-interviewswithjanecableThroughout 2017 I’ll be alternating my own blog posts with interviews with other authors and book business insiders. I have a background in business myself, having trained as a chartered accountant and run my own company for the last sixteen years and when I embarked on my career as an author it was comforting to know how the commercial world works.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt in my business life is never to ask anyone to do anything you wouldn’t do yourself. So in that spirit I’m going to kick off the series by answering the questions I’m going to be asking other authors.

How much of your working life does the business of books take up?

Up until now I’ve planned my working life so that a day a week is devoted to writing and the rest to the accountancy business I run with my husband. In practice I rarely take a whole day off so I’d say the split of my week as a whole is more like 25:75.

In 2017 all that will change as we’re going to move to Cornwall so that I can write more or less full time. Enough of our accountancy business can be done online or in distinct jobs which can completed with visits back to Hampshire when we’ll catch up with friends as well. We felt it was a bit of a risk but we have good relationships with our clients and most have been really supportive.

Now we just have to sell our house!

What’s your business model to earn a living from writing?

Unlike most authors, at the moment my only income stream from writing is book sales.

Being an accountant I set up my writing in a separate limited company from the start. The company owns the copyright to all my work and is owned by our accountancy business because I knew I would make losses initially so it was a more tax efficient structure.

2016 will be the first year the company makes a profit and I’m really proud it’s come so soon. This is purely from sales of The Cheesemaker’s House and The Faerie Tree – mainly ebooks and mainly from Amazon, although paperback sales from local outlets and events have also played a part.

At the moment I plan to re-invest any profit I make in marketing in the hope that the accountancy business can continue to generate enough money for us both to live off.

What do you write and what do you consider to be your major successes?

I write romantic novels with a twist of suspense. Undoubtedly the things which have made the most difference to my writing career were winning prizes. Way back in 2011 an early draft of The Cheesemaker’s House was a finalist when the Alan Titchmarsh Show won a competition sponsored by Harper Collins to find a new novelist. It gave me the confidence to press ahead and publish the book independently when I couldn’t find an agent or a publisher for it and it’s still my biggest commercial success, ending 2016 in the top 100 romantic ghost stories in the Kindle UK chart.

But it was the second competition the book actually won – the Words for the Wounded Independent Novel Award in 2015 – which moved my career on a stage when as a direct result I was signed by my agent, Felicity Trew. Within a year I had my first publishing contract with Endeavour Press.

Tell me about your latest project

My Endeavour ebook, Another You, was published just before Christmas. As Frost readers who regularly follow my blogs will know, the timing was something of a surprise and my latest project is getting together some serious marketing.

But the new writing cannot stand still and I am on the verge of completing an initial draft of what I hope will be my next novel, a romantic mystery set under the endless skies of Lincolnshire.

ENDEAVOURING TO SURPRISE

I was just about to sit down to write this – and to tell you all about my marketing plans for the new year – when I was distracted by my inbox. Hard to ignore an email from my publisher Endeavour Press though. Hard, and probably not a wise choice.

This one was short and to the point: ‘Please find attached the cover that we have designed for Another You – I do hope you like it. Many thanks for returning the manuscript as well, all going well we are hoping to publish it at some point this week.’ Argh… and ARGH!

Seeing the cover for the first time was always going to be one of those make or break moments and I fingered the ‘download attachment’ button nervously. But I could see a thin slice of the title in the preview pane and the vibrant red script drew me in.

First impressions? I loved it. And first impressions are the most important on a crowded page of thumbnails on Amazon. ‘Open me! Read me!’ it screamed. “The past is never dead…” it told me – and instantly I wanted to know why. Well, I would have if I didn’t already, but you get my drift.

The cover works on so many levels. The GIs in sepia in the past, the modern woman with a touch of colour in the present. The sea, the colours, linking them both. Boy oh boy, am I one happy writer.

There is one proviso though, but I am undecided about whether it’s important. Marie would never wear a skirt that short and while she’d love the hat, she probably couldn’t afford it. When she isn’t in her chef’s whites she almost invariably shoves on a pair of jeans – or if she has to dress to impress, a pair of tailored trousers. Now if you’re the sort of reader who likes to imagine their own characters you won’t care a jot, but if you like to refer to the cover to see what they look like then it could be just a little bit irritating… although overall I suspect I am splitting hairs.

More important is the strap line. There were a few different ones flying around. In the original blurb it was ‘What happens when you reach out and touch the past?’ which I replaced with ‘When the present is unbearable, can you be saved by the past?’ (Amazon loves a question). But the line on the cover is snappy and succinct. Job done.

And it’s just as well one job is, because if the book is going to come out this week then I’m way, way behind. My website updates may have gone to the designer, but they’re still in her in tray; my blog tour is only just beginning to come together; Lisa my PR sent me a draft press release a few weeks ago but I haven’t even had time to open it. And this week is pretty well fully booked… even if I believed that just a fraction before Christmas was a good time to promote a summer read.

A new marketing strategy beckons. Sshh – don’t tell anyone it’s out there. Yet.

Best Endeavours: Jane Cable on her digital publishing deal journey: Sunday Best

On Sunday I went to Studland. Not simply because I needed to, but because I wanted to. Walk where my characters walk; see what my characters see; breathe the same air.
The plot of The Seahorse Summer takes place almost exclusively in Studland Bay and the on the beaches and cliffs which surround it. Centered on the village pub (not The Bankes Arms, albeit my fictional Smugglers shares a similar position) the haunting claustrophobia of the bay echoes Marie’s world as she wonders how she will ever escape.
Having spent so long on one side of the bar in The Smugglers it felt slightly odd to sit on the either side of it in The Bankes Arms. As well as the location I’ve borrowed a few other things; the grey stone of the building itself, the basic L-shaped layout; the huge fireplace and the garden overlooking the sea. But the real pub is very much a vibrant business with its own brewery, B&B rooms and armies of staff – the poor old Smugglers could never compete, relying as it does simply on Marie’s marvelous food.

As a writer you tweak your locations to fit your story, but in the case of Studland the location is changing all by itself. The Seahorse Summer is set just twelve years ago, but all the same coastal erosion has taken its toll. My original position for Marie’s beach hut was at the bottom of a wooden staircase onto the sand not far from Fort Henry. It was there when I first visited in 2009, but not any more. The incredibly wet winter of 2012/13 caused many landslips in the area and the steps were just one of the casualties.
The beach itself is changing too, constantly with every tide. Where there were rocks under Redend Point, now there is sand. One day, the sand will disappear and the rocks will be revealed once again. Up on the cliffs the gorse is almost completely covered with brambles and ferns. The landscape outlives us all, and nature can be a powerful adversary – or ally – as Marie discovers.
The essence of Studland on a sunny Sunday remains. Pleasure boats filling the bay, children playing on the narrow strip of sand as the tide drops, the pub garden filling as lunchtime draws closer. And a writer, wandering slowly through it all, drinking it in, storing it away. Refreshed for the final assault on her editing.

The email came on Monday, via Agent Felicity, with the impeccable timing only achieved by a communication containing deadlines which arrives at the beginning of a holiday. And not a plenty-of-time, relaxing-on-the-beach sort of holiday – a full on archaeological tour of Orkney, with just about every waking hour accounted for.

It was a holiday we’d been looking forward to for over a year: a small group led by a real live archaeologist (a dead, or even half dead one would have been of limited use) around the amazing array of Orkney’s historical sites (see www.orkneyarchaeologytours.co.uk). In just six days we travelled from the Neolithic to World War 2 and back again. Via the ephemeral Picts and the rather more visceral Vikings. We crawled into Stone Age tombs and gazed in wonder at homes lived in 4,500 years ago at Skara Brae. The novelist in me was bitterly disappointed to find the story of the Italian PoWs who built a beautiful chapel from scrap had already been fictionalised, while at the same time storing away nuggets about life as an archaeologist for my current work in progress.

But I digress. The email forwarded to me was from my publisher, Endeavour Press, with an outline timetable for the production phase of The Seahorse Summer: finish the manuscript over the next few weeks, then four to six weeks later they would send me proofs and edit notes. Together? I consulted a writer friend who is published by a rival digital house and yes, that’s the way things are done. Proofs are not final proofs; she received five sets in all and great emphasis was placed on getting things right.

So what I need to get right now is my manuscript. I am delighted to be left to my own devices to do this but at the same time I just know that the “two days’ work” suggested by Endeavour at the pre-contract stage will take me so much longer. Readers are going to part with hard earned cash to buy my book (I hope!) so I owe it to them to make it as perfect as possible.
I guess every writer has their own method of editing. The Seahorse Summer, as a story, is complete. The characters are fully formed but the words aren’t as polished as I’d like them to be. So that’s the first thing I’ll do. Trusty filofax in hand I pencil in Monday and Tuesday next week for this vital task.

Please understand that I am not a full time writer – I also have a business to run. Thankfully my husband (when he gets over his post holiday grump) will be on hand to help, but even so on Wednesday I need to be at a client to deal with their month end – and on Thursday I need to deal with our own. And catch up on all the little tasks that didn’t get done while we were away.

Once these jobs are complete I can return to my editing. Next I’ll work through the manuscript from the point of view of each character, making sure their stories progress logically and their external and internal journeys are sound. For this I’ve booked in five to six days over the next fortnight – each one diarised in between client commitments, training courses, a hair cut and what will doubtless be a much needed massage.

The final read through I’m leaving until I have a clear week later in the month. I can deal with all the loose ends I’ve unearthed (why did the strange rumbling and roaring Marie hears disappear?) and make sure every word is where it should be. All 80,000 of them. And that’s where my meticulous planning should all pay off.
