Illustrator Carmen Garcia Huerta on music, motherhood & Madame Bovary

Illustrator Carmen Garcia Huerta on music, motherhood & Madame BovarySomewhere between photography, cinema and fiction comes illustration. Carmen García Huerta was selected by Taschen as one of the 100 best international illustrators. Her world is both unmistakable and surprising, with a unique attention to detail. Carmen’s work straddles two styles: the stylised and chic in her more commercial work, and a predilection for curved lines and the beauty of imperfection in her more personal projects.

In this interview, we hear from the artist herself on music, motherhood and Madame Bovary…

What is fashion illustration for you?

It’s quite an evasive notion for me, something like the minimal unity of elegance. A subtle yet, at the same time, complex expression of the whole web of design, trend, fabric, texture, attitude, sociology. In my case, the object gains a force and loses volatility, as my drawings are very consistent.

What is happening beyond illustration in the world of Carmen García Huerta?

Well, I am single, which I need – it is vital for my work. The only presence which does not change me or which even, at times, motivates and stimulates me is that of my daughter when she visits me in the studio, but only for a short time. I always have music on. I usually listen to intimate tracks by composers from classical to neo-folk, unless I have an urgent deadline. Then I put on power rock or epic soundtracks to speed me up a bit.

When you were little, what could keep your attention for hours?

I was a very quiet child, introverted and dreamy. I spent a lot of time immersed in my father’s graphics library, where he had lots of books by strip cartoonists from the ‘70s, clearly for adults as they were about politics or soft porn. Perhaps that wasn’t the most appropriate for a child, and I didn’t understand anything that I was reading about, but I am very grateful to have had access to those as that is how I learnt to draw and get engrossed in reading.

Leaving technology aside, what objects do you think are most representative of this era, which will be recognised when looking back from the future?

Now there is a return to the home-made and the artisanal, in perfect harmony with technology. But I don’t know what to say, everything that comes to mind is electronic.  So, if I can’t mention a smartphone, I would say a selfie. I can’t think of anything which better expresses here and now.

If you could create the image of a character from a novel or film in your illustrations, who would it be?

Madame Bovary. In fact, that’s what I’m about to do.

How To Do The Races In Style

With 2016 now finally here, many of us will be looking for a few fun ways to get out and about to shake off the festive cabin fever. And the racing season offers a great way to have a little sporting excitement whilst trying out the latest fashion trends in a truly fabulous setting!

Although many of us may associate horse racing with fusty old betting shops that offer tips on the Grand National for horses with silly names, it’s increasingly becoming something of a hot-spot for many celebrities thanks to the rise of glamorous Ladies Day events and the emergence of racing-influenced fashion styles.

Racing opportunities

gototheracesinstyle

There are many racing events dotted throughout the calendar that can provide a good introduction for the racing newbie. The deeply aristocratic Royal Ascot takes place in the middle of June and offers you the chance to party like royalty and even spot a celebrity or two!

Whereas the pinnacle of the racing season is undoubtedly the Grand National which runs at the Aintree racecourse in Liverpool in April. As we’d feel more comfortable offering fashion advice, if you fancy a tip or two on the Grand National, you’d be better off visiting a site like Coral that offers a greater degree of expert horse-racing knowledge.

Fashion at the races

Racing events have become something of a staple in the fashion calendar. The extravagant hats worn at Royal Ascot give a good indication of the enthusiasm that many fashionistas have for these prestigious racing events.

And whilst some of the garments worn at recent Aintree racing events may have pushed the boundaries of acceptable fashion, our fashion tips for events like the Grand National is to always check the dress code at the racecourse’s website, and be prepared to wrap up warm for any unexpectedly chilly race meetings!

Making it an event

racing

Modern race-going has become so much more than just the horse racing and fashion tips however, as many people are increasingly turning a race meeting into a fully-fledged holiday activity. Thankfully it’s now easier than ever to really make it a luxurious occasion as you can now easily rent some bespoke country houses and even mansions with the help of the UK Airbnb site that has hundreds of opulent retreats dotted around the nation.

And some glamorous hotels such as the Goodwood Hotel are handily located near the Sussex racecourse and offer suitably luxurious specials such as a Girl’s Weekend Away offer. This provides full access to the hotel’s health club, so that you can return to the racetrack fully-energised the next day to cheer on your winner as they cross the line!

“Fashion is an art and craft that reflects on the nature of the body and on the individual creativity” – Anthony, Designer at Helen Anthony

Helen Anthony is the rising star of Savile row, Helen Anthony is breaking out of the conventional molds, setting his own rules and letting his imagination run free.

His range of high-quality, bespoke and ready to wear suits, leather collection and hand knitting collection offers a versatility rivaled by none other.

For whatever the occasion, Helen Anthony will have something to allow you to look, and ultimately be your best.

As a full-scale expression of his own perspectives and ideas on clothing that he couldn’t find on the set brands and shops he had around him in his youth, he took it into his own and started creating his unique designs. The brand name stemmed from the combination of his own and his great grandmother’s, which takes the first half, and not only serves as a heartfelt dedication to her continuous inspiration, Helen Thomas was in fact Anthony’s upmost supporter and very first teacher of basic tailoring skills.

Throughout the years, the label has evolved, following a steady course of bold yet elegant designs. Anthony’s creative line travels a precise trajectory through striking individualism whilst maintaining an effortlessly classical foundation. The use of an eclectic and fearless colour scheme reflects the diversity of global fashion that Anthony wished to represent through his collections.

It is not only enough to be seen, but also to be understood if we are ever to be truly known. Decide who you are. Choose who you want to be…”– Anthony, Designer at Helen Anthony

“We are the quiet confidence, the assured style. We are the unique statement, that brave message that delineates us from the rest”

Founders Greg and Jimmy, colleagues at innocent drinks, took inspiration from brands like TOMS shoes, and came up with the idea while at the office gym thinking about how we too often find ourselves complaining about menial things when there are real issues faced by many around the world. They then pitched for, and won, the £1000 innocent scholarship, voted by peers, to test the idea and have since launched the business with this funding.

The launch range comprises of four designs in Men’s and Women’s variants, with one example being: ‘Wifi’s down again’, which supports Telecoms Sans Frontieres (Communications without borders) whom help refugees and disaster victims reconnect with their families using satellite phones.

Africa And The City… Izelia Brings Cutting Edge Couture To London Fashion Week SS/16

12009746_10156079904805015_2197507457803038565_n12002268_10156079906770015_4436777713864478353_n

On the 18th of September 2015, ISATU HARRISON brought her Spring/Summer 2016 IZELIA collection to the Millennium Gloucester Hotel, 4-18 Harrington Gardens, South Kensington, London, SW7 4LH.

With her exuberantly eclectic style, ISATU HARRISON put on a typically vibrant performance, throwing a storm of colour onto her spring/summer 2016 couture catwalk.

12004797_10156079906920015_5789720428352101294_n 12027792_10156079907170015_5564966914300916869_n 12032942_10156079907505015_7635694512756965474_n 12033097_10156079907015015_6188319753137451181_n

Rampaging through any shade she could find, she produced a highly luxurious and supremely feminine collection, a cacophony of brilliantly rich splashes and prints that fulfilled every expectation of her, producing a supremely feminine collection using fabrics that suggested she had rummaged through the most luxurious of haberdashery boxes that you could say, had a touch of the Christian Lacroix about it.

This was the IZELIA brand to the core, but she refused to let the chaos take over.

12047077_10156079907160015_9036961958216795546_n 12046658_10156079905955015_5382639536686042188_n 12046635_10156079906700015_751533149876231111_n 12038393_10156079907395015_6732743883133633673_n

The designer’s breathtaking collection featured a delicious palette that ran from lemon and lime sorbet to pomegranate and featured piles of gold, African-inspired prints splashed over a selection of dresses and jumpsuits that were tailored to the point of perfection, as if the designer had forfeited any need to cut the fabric.

The Sierra Leonean designer, whose strength is her ability to celebrate the feminine capacity to be seriously spoilt, gave her models big seventies-style curly hair and layered on the eyeshadow and lipstick to give them a air of high maintenance narcissism.

12036964_10156079906850015_169213225168577554_n 12027531_10156079907320015_961196599033613091_n 12011395_10156079907515015_1202504815933549098_n

Models were wrapped in an explosion of colour and luxurious fabrics with exuberant head-wraps that demonstrated Isatu’s desire to discover what women really want.

12002109_10156079906265015_8404627166233608815_n 12049228_10156079905875015_6838965798034482695_n 12047138_10156079905825015_4833760020982652465_n 12039491_10156079905620015_4698036637078836053_n 12038551_10156079905965015_4882919191482298222_n 12036763_10156079906285015_3231295703330487972_n 12009746_10156079906425015_1877984714159115519_n 12002902_10156079906010015_7491546079779838053_n

Isatu produced a spring/summer wardrobe that was rich in detail, finish, and texture, with a slim, somewhat sixties silhouette, counterpointed with the occasional controlled bursts of volume. There were exemplary denims slashed with vibrant citrus yellow, sleek and streamlined, with cinched jackets and skirts that finished just above the knee.

The IZELIA sophomore-inspired collection, featured pants, jackets, dramatic capes and long-line waiscoats that wrapped around the body like an embrace.

As for the dresses, they were expertly executed, achieving soft, supple, drapey effects, as well as more structured ones, making a famously clingy fabric practical and wearable.

12038470_10156079907175015_103118489155162665_n 12036763_10156079906140015_8393927808486247549_n 12027792_10156079906205015_7064527615081463541_n 12027627_10156079907250015_6819042954047275383_n 12027627_10156079906430015_3339673272336228939_n 12009810_10156079907300015_4556501964285922736_n 11059893_10156079906420015_8221195747006906702_n

Isatu balances the qualities that women expect from cutting-edge urban fashion—sportiness and sex appeal, in equal measure—with the contemplative, cerebral nature of her own approach, revealing her fondness for the folkloric aspect of her native country.

Cognac-coloured prints translating into a quietly glamorous collection of embellished feminine pieces, juxtaposed with sturdy, more masculine ones, the IZELIA brand is morphing into the go-to brand for hip young women looking for must-have pieces.

This was an accomplished collection from an inspired designer who is transmitting a jolt of excitement about contemporary dressing, with a perennially youthful eye, giving her best collections a tomboyish naturalness that manages to capture the essence of camera-ready fashion…
