Independent film Third Contact Tours after making cinema history at BFI IMAX

Third Contact is the debut feature film from Director Simon Horrocks and his company, BodyDouble Films. After a successful premiere at the renowned BFI IMAX, the independent film will make its way around the UK, Europe, America and Canada over the next four months. Screenings are being funded by Indiegogo and Tugg using a unique ‘cinema on demand’ approach.

The story follows Dr David Wright, a depressed psychotherapist, who embarks on an obsessive investigation after a second patient takes their life in mysterious circumstances.

Shot using only a handheld camcorder, a microphone and a light, the overall budget for the film came to an astonishingly low £4000. The film has been praised for its exceptional camera work in addition to its seamless use of colours, themes and sounds throughout. The actors have been credited on numerous occasions for their performances whilst the script has been commended on its intelligence.

The writer and director, Simon Horrocks, who also took care of filming, casting, production and editing, had raised the money to put the film together by working in a cinema. Later down the line, Horrocks would be making cinema history for having a film short costing virtually nothing, screening in a theatre alongside films made for £200 million.

This milestone moment in Horrocks career came together by a Kickstarter campaign, which funded the premiere held at the BFI IMAX in London. The likes of MacUser Magazine and Raindance Film Festival got behind the project and made donations towards the campaign.

Once the premiere had taken place the film received rave reviews from the likes of Faust, Critics Associated, Frankenpost, Movie Sleuth and The London Film Review. Third Contact also made it to the prestigious HoF International Film Festival in Germany.

Third Contact will be screening in various locations in the UK, Europe, Canada and America over the forthcoming few months.

Having curated one of the world’s leading film festivals and taught filmmaking classes for over two decades, Raindance has a mission to discover, foster and promote independent filmmaking around the world, always from an active, creative and energetic angle. Mulholland Pictures won 4 awards at the Berlin Film Festival with their film Left Luggage. Other credits include Enigma starring Kate Winslet, directed by Michael Apted, Fogbound with Luke Perry and The Discovery of Heaven with Stephen Fry.

Love.Honour.Obey. is the story of Alison, who with her husband Tom is late one night assaulted and bound by an intruder in their home. A dark kidnapping story takes an intriguing twist, as it transpires that the intruder has a mysterious vision for the married couple. A gritty psychological thriller with a haunting moral, Love.Honour.Obey. also features the use of ‘Kinbaku’ – a form of Japanese bondage which literally translates as ‘the beauty of tight binding’.

Cult director Ate de Jong has made films in English, German and Dutch. He lived and worked in Hollywood for 8 years, and his credits include Drop Dead Fred and Highway to Hell. Ate has also directed the Miami Vice episode Missing Hours, which guest-starred James Brown and was a hallmark discovery moment for a young unknown comedian – Chris Rock. He currently resides in Amsterdam where he is a household name, equally controversial and successful.

Screenwriter Mark Rogers was discouraged from his craft by his university experience, where he was told he should not go into filmmaking due to his Cerebral Palsy. He got in contact with Raindance seeking some inspiration and a different opinion, and after reading one of his scripts Raindance founder and film producer Elliot Grove decided the opportunity was too good to miss. Director of Photography Zoran Veljkovic was classically trained in Yugoslavia, and has since shot 10 award-winning features, including Peter Howitt’s Dangerous Parking. Zoran has also lensed many more shorts, promos and commercials, and has been picked up awards in America, Italy, Spain, Japan, Holland and Yugoslavia.

HOLLYWOOD – IS IT STILL THE CENTRE OF THE FILM MAKING WORLD?

oscar winners 2013Following the success at the Oscars of both Argo, a big pat on the back of Hollywood, and Life of
Pi, an ‘international’ film with no recognisable big name star, Jonathan Brown looks at whether Hollywood is still the centre of the film Universe.

‘Domestic’

Hollywood is Cinema, right? After all, despite every country having its own awards ceremony, the
Oscars are still seen as the pinnacle of the film making world – at least to the studio marketing men.

Even though film wasn’t created in the US, it’s where it became what it is today. If fact, some of the
big original Hollywood studio are still around today, and, despite flagging profits, are as influential as ever. To be classified a big blockbuster, you need to take over $300m ‘domestic’ , ie in the USA.

Even if you flopped abroad, a good take at home could be enough to make a success. Even in Britain,
films like Skyfall are sold as the ‘Number 1 USA Box Office Hit’, even if they only spent one weekend at the top and just broke even.

The American box office was, and still is, the judge of commercial success, in the way the Oscars
were the mark of critical success (there’s an argument that the Oscars are way of the pulse of new
and exciting cinema, but that’s a different article).

But the tide is turning. America, as a country, is suffering more than most in the economic downturn,
and, while Hollywood continues to spend more and more on their blockbusters (the recent Twilight
movie cost £120m!), the people spending the most of their hard earned wages going to see these
blockbusters is moving.

‘Overseas’

While America still is the biggest single market for movies, and is far ahead of its closest rivals,
the ‘Overseas’ market is becoming a bigger cash cow.

Let’s have a look at the numbers. The usual ratio for a movie is around 40% of its takings from the
US and 60% from overseas – roughly. Ten years ago, in 2002, just four of the top ten highest grossing
movies took more than 60% of their box office from overseas, with two films (Signs and My Big Fat
Greek Wedding), taking less than half.

In fact, My Big Fat Greek Wedding took 76% of its taking from the US. And I’m assuming the other
24% from Greece.

Skip forward ten years, to 2012, and seven films took over 60% from overseas with Ice Age 4 taking
82% from overseas. Compare this to the first Ice Age move, which took only 54% from ‘foreign’ box
office and the swing becomes hugely noticeable, and important.

It’s the same if you compare 2011 and 2001. In 2001, there were just two films making over 60% of
its box office from foreign markets, while in 2011 there were nine films.

In 2009, box-office behemoth Avatar took 72% of £2.7bn from overseas. Ten years earlier, The
Phantom Menace, the new Star Wars movie the world had been waiting for, took just 54% from said
world.

If we go even further back, to the days of ET and the original Star Wars, the take is even slimmer,
with overseas counting for just 45% and 40% respectively.

Some of the shift can be accounted for by long term word of mouth, or even self-fulfilling prophecy.
Many of the big sequels, especially animations, have made huge amounts overseas, while their
domestic take, while still massive, hasn’t grow as fast.

When a film has been classed as a hit in the US, companies are a lot happier pushing the sequels
overseas. Also, while many overseas viewers might not have caught the original at the cinema, the
may have bought the DVD, seen it on TV, or downloaded it.

However, you don’t need to be a hit in the US to be a hit abroad. A textbook example of how foreign
markets can make a film a success is the recently released, and hugely divisive, Cloud Atlas. Directed
by the Wachowskis and Tom Twyker, the film has been classed a huge flop. On a budget reported to
be around $100m, it opened to just $9m in the USA.

As the US is so opening weekend focus (film takings tend to drop off by around 40-60% per
weekend), the chances of it making its budget back in America were pretty slim. It went on to earn
just £27m in total – domestic.

However, the film, set across various countries with a cast from across the world, has made a very
decent $80m overseas – so far. The $80m take does not include the UK, France, Japan and Australia.
This could easily add another £10-20m to its take.

Some of this change, especially from the 70’s/80’s, is the arrival across the world of the multiplex
cinema – meaning more films, more showings, and more attendees in the foreign markets. Factory
cinema, if you will.

However, this doesn’t account for the change in the past ten years. These changes are partly due to
two main factors – one is the new middle classes in the emerging markets like India, China and South
America, where people are starting to get some Rupees, Pesos or Yuen in their pockets, and having
the free time to spend it.

Secondly, is the move in America away from cinema to home viewing. Companies like NetFlix are
drawing people away from the multiplex and into the living room, despite desperate Hollywood’s
attempt to keep them with the introduction of the ultimate cinema experience – 3D.

This has seen cash intake increase slightly, due to higher ticket prices for 3D films, but attendances
are still dropping.

And why wouldn’t they, when you’ve had vast improvements and reduction of costs of home cinema
systems, or just a decent TV, and the reduction in time it takes for a film to go from the cinema to
online. People are realising they’d rather wait a couple of months and watch it on their home 3D
system, instead of paying $20 for a cinema ticket.

The Future

So, what does this mean for the future of blockbusters? I can see two possible outcomes.

The Hollywood studios could start to tailor their films more for foreign markets, using casts,
locations and directors from across the globe.

While Hollywood is keen on using foreign actors, they always tend to be the bad guy – maybe we’ll
see a few more leading actors from across the globe in mainstream Hollywood movies.

Or, more cynically, it could mean that distributors start to buy up more screen space in foreign
cinemas, pushing out locally made films.

However, on the evidence, especially in the foreign markets with an established film industry, this is
not the case. In 2009, four of China’s top ten grossing films where from China. China does however
limit the number of foreign movies able to be released a year.

In India in the same year, seven where from India (and one of the other ones was Slumdog
Millionaire).

So, maybe there is a balance to be struck. Maybe Hollywood can start to look outwards, taking
influence from a world of cinema, while still pumping in the big bucks to bring the big spectacle.

Day for Night launches distribution arm with first two UK theatrical releases

Day for Night is delighted to announce the launch of its distribution arm with its first two theatrical titles HI-SO (Aditya Assarat, Thailand) and THURSDAY TILL SUNDAY(Dominga Sotomayor, Chile).

 

The second film from award-winning Bangkok based Thai-American director Aditya Assarat (Wonderful Town) HI-SO had its world premiere at Busan International Film Festival and European premiere at Berlinale (Forum). HI-SO premieres in the UK on 1 March 2013 at Curzon Renoir. Set against the backdrop of a post-tsunami Thailand, Aditya Assarat’s second film features Thai film star Ananda Everingham in a bittersweet tale of love, memories and belonging. Day for Night is pleased to welcome director Aditya Assarat for a Q&A following the UK premiere as well as for a second screening on 2 March 2013 at Hackney Picturehouse. Both screenings will be followed by receptions sponsored by Chang Beer.

Day for night’s second release comes in April 2013 with much talked about Chilean director Dominga Sotomayor‘s debut feature THURSDAY TILL SUNDAY which won the prestigious Tiger Award at International Film Festival Rotterdam 2012 and has since been selected for more than 60 film festivals worldwide, including London Film Festival 2012.

Top Tips on Independent Film Making from Ollie Kepler’s Expanding Purple World

5 top tips for shooting an independent film

 

Arnold Maude, Associate Producer on Ollie Kepler’s Expanding Purple World, shares his light-hearted tips to ensure you keep your sanity and things run smoothly when shooting an independent production:

1.       Cleanliness is next to Godliness: Have enough clean clothes for the duration of the shoot. You may think you can recycle but depending on the conditions of the shoot this could be an unpopular choice with the rest of the crew!

 

2.       Location, location, location: When scouting for locations consider transport and parking. If you’re filming in the capital Film London can help but if you’re going off the beaten track you may find yourself stuck feeding meters.

 

3.       Hello? Is anyone home? You don’t want to turn up on the first day of filming and find yourself unable to access your location – especially not with crew waiting and your actors due to appear. Make sure you not only have the phone number of the key-holder but also his flatmate’s number and that of a handy neighbour. Just in case. Is this paranoia or experience?

 

4.       You’ve got mail: As you begin preproduction you will receive an ever-increasing deluge of emails which will pile up like a tanker load of poured concrete. Start organising your email folders now when it’s quiet because when things get going it’ll be like feeding a troop of monkeys all screaming for your attention.

 

5.       Friends with benefits: Don’t cast your friends, at least not in a main role (unless you’re friends with Hugh Grant or similar in which case my advice to them is not to act in your film). This is about credibility, casting your mate is a good way to lose any you may have. Casting actors who may not necessarily be famous but of whom the industry is aware makes you a more credible proposition.

There are a range of legal barriers and production problems you might encounter when working on an independent film project. Arnold Maude, Associate Producer on Ollie Kepler’s Expanding Purple World, shares his top five tips to avoid the most costly errors:

 

1.       Digital Production: Learn as much as you can about the technical side of production. As digital production becomes ever more dominant if you don’t know the lay of the land you are going to get lost in the binary jungle. Get a guide if you can. You don’t need to remember the specifics but an understanding of the issues and processes involved will be invaluable.

 

2.       Credibility: Credibility is one of the most useful things to have when putting together a film. If you can afford it, one of the easiest ways of establishing credibility is to join the Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television (PACT). PACT membership signals you are guaranteeing a level of professionalism as you must meet certain minimum production standard. Membership will establish your production as a serious one.

 

3.       Soundtrack: If you have heard a song on the radio you can’t afford it – even if the band says you can use the song, they won’t own the rights. You need two sets of rights – the Synch rights and the Master Use license. This is where unsigned bands shine. They can be very generous and are often just happy that you want to use their music. Pay them something; even if it’s only a token.

 

4.       Cameras: I’ve seen people agonise over what camera they should use before they had even written the script! There’s not much point in trying to figure this out in advance of preproduction as you will eventually discuss it with your Director of Photography. Technology moves on at such a pace it’s pretty nigh impossible to predict what the situation will be in a years time. By the time you get into preproduction an entire new generation of digital equipment could be available.

 

5.       Script Clearance: If you want to sell your film in the US you will need to have the script cleared by a specialist agency and then have a lawyer look over the report. The US is an incredibly litigious nation and if, for example, you accidentally use the name of an existing business then you open yourself up to a possible lawsuit. For protection against legal action you’ll need script clearance in order to obtain Errors and Omissions insurance.

Mark Potts Cinema Six Interview | Raindance 2012

The Raindance Film Festival was as brilliant as ever, and we have an exclusive interview with Mark Potts, director of one of the festival’s films, Cinema Six.

1. What made you want to be a filmmaker?
– It was probably a few things. First, The Blair Witch Project. It’s embarrassing to admit, but that got me into it initially. My friends and I took my dad’s Hi-8 camera and made a parody of it. It was a little over 2 hours long. I edited it with VCRs and honestly, I cannot really remember how I set it up. It was two VCRs connected to a television and the camera and somehow it worked. But from there, my high school Spanish teacher encouraged my friends and I to do a public access show, and we did that. Then, I started working at a movie theatre, met Cole, and it just clicked. That theatre was my second home and I loved being there. And the feeling I got being there and immersing myself in films and just escaping life made me fall in love with cinema. I wanted to give someone else that experience, that escape, and some relaxation.

2. Tell us about yourself
I’m currently living in Los Angeles but am from Oklahoma. My partner in crime, Cole Selix, and I met in Enid, Oklahoma while going to school together and working at the movie theatre. We started Singletree Productions in 2006 and have made, literally, 100s of shorts and four features (most can be seen on singletreeproductions.com, even the first three features.) I am married to Hailey Branson-Potts, who works at the Los Angeles Times and she is a million times funnier and smarter than I am but don’t put that in the story because then she’ll be a dick about it.

3. You were co-writer and director of Cinema Six. How did you find directing your own work?
Cole and I have been directing our own stuff for years, so it isn’t too difficult for us now. If anything, while directing, we discover all the things we missed while writing and it creates this odd paradox of feelings where we feel like good directors but bad writers. But a lot of that is because Cole and I are always changing stuff, trying to make it better, trying to make things snappier, funnier, more emotional. And that’s why we asked a lot of the guys who worked on it to come aboard because we trust their opinions and tastes and wanted them to help make us better.

4. Tell us about Cinema Six.
Cinema Six has been around for about nine years. Cole and I first started talking about it while working in the movie theatre back in 2003. Of course, at that time, the script was really just un-connected scenes of us messing with customers and complaining about customers and being jerks to customers. Since that point, Cole and I have moved multiple times, gone to college, gotten married, had kids (Cole has two awesome kids, I have a pug) and have gone through some big changes which all can be seen in the version of the film now. It’s a love letter to the cinema and a commentary on growing up and just doing whatever you have to do to be happy.

5. What was the hardest thing about making the film?
Oddly enough, there wasn’t anything too difficult about making the film. The two biggest things were the budget because we were very limited and finding the perfect movie theatre. We needed a theatre that was older, not that flashy, and still ran film. It’s hard to find film theatres, which makes me sad. For me as an actor, the hardest part was remembering lines. I don’t memorize lines, which is terrible. Brand Rackley and John Merriman, the other two leads, are as professional as you can get and they were always prepared even as far as to tell me my lines. It was embarrassing but also humbling to know I had two friends and actors that cared enough to do that and not give me too much shit for it.

6. Where did you get the funding?
We received our funding from Reilly Smith and some of his family and friends. They chose to believe in all of us and I will forever be in their debt. There isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t pray to God we make their money back. They deserve it because they took a chance on some young filmmakers who just wanted to talk about growing up and tell vulgar jokes. I can never thank them enough.

7. How did it feeling getting into Raindance?
It was shocking and awesome! I was dumbfounded by the news and still kind of am. I am incredibly upset I couldn’t make it as well. But, we did make a special video Q&A that we hope people stay and watch. It answers a lot of questions. Not really.

8. What advice what you give to others filmmakers?
The best advice I have is to keep making things. Just keep making, even if it’s bad. We made many, many bad things. We still do. But we’re always making something and you learn something from every video and every mistake. Watch movies, read screenplays, make stuff.

9. You co-wrote the script, can you tell us about your writing process.
Cole and I have written scripts together for over six years. Our process is pretty solid now. When we get ideas, we talk about them for a long time. We throw around jokes and scene ideas and if we still love it months later, then we feel like it’s worth writing and trying to make. This process has weeded out many, many ideas and I love doing it. Just talking things through and seeing what sticks. When we’re at a point that we want to write it, we’ve talked about it so much that it really just needs to be put on paper, so I write it all out, then we get to ripping it apart and fixing it.

10. What’s next for you?
I’m hoping to start another feature next year. I have a few ideas and none of them are like Cinema Six, which excites me. They are all funny, but much, much darker.

Meeting Place Director Jason Croot Tells All

What was the idea behind Meeting Place?

Hello frost readers, We wanted to create something original and after having several ideas we kept it simple [by] not have any back story and filming actors who create there own scenes I love improvisation and Meeting Place is 100% improv.
Tell us about the film.

The film is a montage of conversations edited together a day in a London Cafe the twist is 80% of the conversations are between 2 actors who are the same person which gives the film a certain unique edge
How did you cast?

I like to work with actors I’ve worked with before also new actors fresh out of drama school we have a real mix in the film and some fab acting displays
What was the hardest part of the process?

Dare I say it the now getting people to watch the film I don’t have the funds to market like the big boys since giving my first feature away for free which as notched up 10,000 views in 8 months, I hope people will enjoy Meeting Place it’s a entertaining film
You act, write and direct. What is your least favourite thing to do when making a film? How hard is it to juggle everything?

I love directing and the process of filmmaking it is time consuming but rewarding when you receive good feedback and reviews, the acting is with me and I strive to keep learning and improving
Do you have any favourite characters in it?

I was blown away by some of the improvisation and have so many scenes I like I can’t really narrow it down
What did you shoot on?

We shot on a Sony HDV
What was your main inspiration for the film?

Jim Jarmusch’s Coffee and Cigarettes we did not try to copy it, but it is a great film and very simple but watchable

Raindance and Staffordshire University Announce an Autumn 2012 Intake

– Postgraduate Training Programme with Distance Learning Option –
Raindance – a leading UK film industry network and training organisation – is pleased to announce that
applications for its September/October 2012 intake are now open.

The Postgraduate Film Degree Masters Programme, available in both MA and MSc versions, was launched
in 2011 and designed to meet the needs of emerging filmmakers. It is based on a proven formula that
includes Raindance courses, industry networking (including one-on-one tutorials) and self-directed study.

From October 2012, both MA and MSc are available as a distance learning option, making the course
available to anyone with internet access wherever they are based in the world.

Raindance’s groundbreaking postgraduate degree enables students to set their own individual career and
project objectives. This is made possible by an unrivalled collaboration between Raindance, the
Independent Film Trust as a charity established to advance the cause of independent filmmaking, and
innovative academics at Staffordshire University who introduced the UK’s first single honours degree in
Film, Television and Radio Studies in 1990. Graduates of the Raindance programme are awarded an M.A.
or M.Sc. degree that is academically validated by Staffordshire University.

Students manage their own schedule and modules which are developed in regular discussions with their
tutors in one-on-one tutorials. Depending on the student’s needs and interests, the investigations could lead to an M.A. in Directing Independent Films, an M.Sc. in Digital Cinematography, or highly specialised issues like Producing Films with Crowd Funding or Writing Fantasy Screenplays, that traditional institutions would not be able to offer.
