Ben Fogle Launches Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon Ballot

The ballot for the world’s most beautiful city run, the Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon, was opened today by Royal Parks Foundation trustee, Ben Fogle, in St. James’s Park. This year, the event takes on greater significance as government funding to maintain the parks has been cut by 25 per cent. Money raised from the event offers valuable resources to help the Royal Parks Foundations work and bridge the funding gap.

20,000 runners will take to the streets of London on 12 October for the Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon, which encompasses four of the Royal Parks: Hyde Park, St James’s Park, Kensington Gardens and Green Park. Since its inception in 2008, the annual event has raised over £18 million for more than 450 charities while also raising sustainable funds for the Royal Parks Foundation to support London’s eight Royal Parks of over 5,000 acres. According to Virgin Money Giving, the event raises more money per runner than any other UK half marathon.

benfogle

“The government now gives less than half the £35m it takes to care for the Parks each year, leaving many gaps to fill,” commented Royal Parks Foundation chief executive, Sara Lom. “The Parks do a good job at generating income through the cafés, boating and other concessions, as well as through major events such as Frieze Art Fair and the Hyde Park Summer concert series, but the Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon is vital to our efforts to help protect rare wildlife, restore historic monuments and engage young people with the natural world.”

Over the years, The Royal Parks Foundation has funded a number of projects to help improve and conserve the Royal Parks such as creating the Isis Education Centre, a state-of-the-art environmental education centre in Hyde Park, plus restoring the 19th century Italian Gardens in Kensington Gardens as part of a project to restore water features across the Parks.

“There are a number of projects we are aiming to support as a charity over the next 12 to 18 months off the back of the support we get from the Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon,” said Royal Parks Foundation trustee, Ben Fogle. “For example, after years of enthusiastic use many of the Royal Parks’ children’s playgrounds are in need of some TLC. We want to help create exciting, imaginative spaces for active play in our Royal Parks, so we will be working with the Royal Parks Management teams to design new play spaces at Gloucester Gate in Regent’s Park and South Carriage Drive in Hyde Park.”

The Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon ballot opens on Tuesday 25 February until Wednesday 4 March. Runners can enter the ballot by visiting www.royalparkshalf.com

The Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon takes place on Sunday 12 October 2014, starting and finishing in Hyde Park.

Sir David Attenborough Launches Global Crowdfunding Campaign to Save Mountain Gorillas

Frost favourite Sir David Attenborough will launch a global crowdfunding campaign this week to save mountain gorillas.

The Indiegogo crowdfund, launched to coincide with the first ever UK Crowdfunding Day, aims to raise £110,000 by December 11 to support Fauna & Flora International’s work with mountain gorillas.  This work fosters cooperation across national borders and empowers communities to monitor, protect and benefit from maintaining a healthy population of mountain gorillas.

Sir David, who first highlighted the plight of the mountain gorillas in 1978 in the BBC’s Life on Earth television series, said: “If we are to ensure the survival of mountain gorillas, it is vital that the global community supports our efforts.

sir_david-attenboroough

“By supporting this campaign and promoting it through your networks, you will not only be helping to secure a future for mountain gorillas, but also the tens of thousands of Rwandan, Ugandan and Congolese people who have come to depend upon them for their livelihoods and wellbeing.”

Founder of TheCrowdfundingCentre.com and organiser of the Deep Impact crowdfunding conference taking place on Friday, November 1, Barry James, said: “The UK is leading the world in using Crowdfunding for good as well as for business. We’re delighted to be working with Sir David and Fauna & Flora International to launch what we believe is the first truly global conservation crowdfunding project – which will undoubtedly be the first of many – as part of this first UK Crowdfunding Day.

“Crowdfunding is revolutionising how businesses are created – making them more people-centred –enabling and supporting the causes the crowd are passionate about. It’s rebooting funding as we know it.

“It’s reshaping the landscape for both for causes, charities and social enterprises and also for startups, entrepreneurs and medical research and has great potential for our communities, towns and cities across the UK. Crowdfunding has changed the financial landscape forever.”

Turkish Designer Bora Aksu Launches London Fashion Week

“NAZAR”

Spring/Summer 2014

Celebrating 10 years at London Fashion Week this year has spurred Bora Aksu to look back to his Turkish homeland and its rich, colourful and diverse culture. His spring/summer 2014 collection has been inspired by his childhood memories of there, memories that have had such a big influence on him.

Bora Aksu, London fashion week, fashion, SS14

Although Bora’s childhood memories of Turkey are still as magical today as when they were first played out, as Bora spent more and more time in London and travelled the world their uniqueness and richness has become more valuable to him. The long, hot summer days spent on the Aegean coast are the most prominent recollections that Bora draws on for this season’s inspiration. Long stretches of white sand, bobbing fishing boats, sun-faded houses with lush gardens and hidden village markets are the happy times that give his spring/summer collection a less melancholic feel than has been his signature to date.

Bora Aksu explains: “When I realised that this would be my tenth year at London Fashion Week, it struck me how long it has been since I left Turkey to come to study in the UK. It propelled me to reminisce and look back at my roots. I felt that I wanted to re-ignite the passion coming from the rich culture and traditional artistry of Turkey that had inspired me in the first place.”

Bora Aksu says of his new collection: ‘I’m delighted to have worked with the Turkish Ministry of Culture & Tourism as official sponsor for this London Fashion Week show. After 10 years showing in London it’s been great to go back to my roots and be inspired by the rich culture and traditional artistry of Turkey. I hope the show will inspire people to explore Turkey and discover the amazing gems it has to offer.’

The patterns and textures of the Iznik tiles that adorn the show invite have been re-created using traditional handwoven Turkish textiles incorporated into pencil skirts, dresses, cropped jackets and boleros.

Layering continues to be key, with geometric laces over silk tulles and chiffons or used as sheer panels against quilted cotton for added texture in skirts and dresses. Hand crochets produced in Izmir create accents across the collection.

Classic shapes have been contrasted with summer shorts and knitted tees while plastinated cottons update the traditional feel.

The colour palette for the collection began with the traditional ‘nazar boncuk’ or ‘evil eye bead’. Worn in Turkey to ward off evil, legend says that if one should break it is a sign that you have been saved from a great misfortune. Traditionally made from a disc of blue glass, it is this protective colour of the evil eye that dominates the collection. Off-whites also play a key role keeping the collection light before bold injections of bright yellows and fuchsia are introduced, reminding Bora of the long hot summers that he so enjoyed.

“This collection has been incredibly personal for me” Bora Aksu says “It’s been fantastic to have the support from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism and to take this first step in highlighting a land I am so passionate about and connected to. I hope the show will inspire people to explore the rich culture and traditional artistry that Turkey has to offer.”
