The Waterway Girls by Milly Adams

The_Waterway_Girls_Milly_Adams

I’m always delighted when the latest novel from Milly Adams arrives on my desk and happy to say her latest, The Waterway Girls, did not disappoint. More than that, I discovered that this is the start of a series which follows the unsung heroes who spent the war on the canals.

It is October, 1943 and nineteen year-old Polly Holmes is leaving bombed out London to join the war effort on Britain’s canals.

She boards the Marigold in the pouring rain and soon discovers she has plenty to contend with. Not least her fellow crew: strong and impetuous Verity, and seasoned skipper Bet.

With Polly’s sweetheart away fighting in the RAF and her beloved brother killed in action, there is plenty of heartache to be healed on the waterway. And as Polly rolls up her sleeves and gets stuck into life on board the narrowboat she discovers new beginnings await amid the anguish of war.

What can I say? I was soon absorbed in life on the canal and the journey from London to Birmingham. Adams draws her characters so finely that I half expect to bump into them when I pop to the shops. Life on the canals was tough and relentless and the descriptions of how the canals and locks operated is described in such a way that gives the reader a glimpse into the life of the boaters, without being over technical and slowing the story down. But there is beauty there too, and we are able to see this through Polly’s eyes as she settles to the rhythm of the waterways.

There is such warmth and humanity in the writing  that it makes the characters and the setting leap from the page. Among the pages you’ll find romance, humour and ordinary people doing their best to survive and get along in extraordinary circumstances.

I’m so relieved that this isn’t the last we have heard of the Waterway Girls. I can’t wait to discover what lies ahead for Polly, Verity and Bet.

The Ultimate Supper Club with Danilo Cortellini

If you’re going to spend the evening dining at a strangers house, you’re going to want to make sure it’s going to be memorable for the right reasons. When looking for a supper club it can be hard to know which one is going to be to your liking, so make sure you start at the very top. We recently spent the evening with the enigma that is ‘The London Foodie’. Luiz Hara hosted a supper club worthy of anyone’s gastronomy dreams. Luiz himself a former investment banker turned Cordon Bleu trained chef, food, wine and travel writer has managed to taste his way around the World and decided to host supper clubs to share his gastronomical adventures with you. We were in for a treat as Luiz decided to share with us none other than Danilo Cortellini head chef to the Italian Embassy and his 10 delectable Italian courses taken from his first recipe book ‘4 Grosvenor Square: The Menu of The Italian Embassy in London’

The evening blends the warm and welcoming surroundings of Luiz’s home with the most incredibly intricate and note-worthy cooking of Danilo’s made and prepared in the heart of the kitchen where you enjoy your meal amongst a good crowd of appreciative guests. This is really a great place to get social and take in the atmosphere of an Italian dinner party, sharing wine and sharing exchanges on the impressive menu. The evening is made all the more charming when eating the same course on a different plate to your neighbour and watching the Creuset bubbling in front of your eyes. Small touches mean a lot here and it somehow makes you appreciate your dinner even more. There is minimal fuss and a team of warm and inviting hosts and servers.

Each of the courses are taken from Danilo’s new cookbook so not only can you admire the skill and creativity of the dishes, if you’re a dab hand in the kitchen, you can also recreate them yourself. Particularly impressive and instagrammable is the delicious Pasta Multicolore made with four different coloured pastas. Intricate and beautiful, Danilo’s artistic flair is showcased well. The beauty is, Danilo has made it all the more accessible for you to give it a try by including the recipe in his book and just in case you wanted to recreate it yourself, we attached the recipe below…

The menu was well balanced with some classic Italian dishes amongst more traditional offerings such as the Baccalà served with creamed Polenta. A simple dish with maximum flavour served in an ice cream tub.

We are taken from fish to simple vegetarian dishes such as the surprisingly light Lemon Risotto to the sumptuous pièce de la resistance Veal Cheeks Pizzaiola which is made using the best passata from Imperial d’Abruzzo a real salute to Italian cuisine.

Of course no 10 course menu is complete without at least 1 dessert and lucky for us we had 2. Yoghurt mousse with caramelised apricot and pistachio crumble and of course Tiramisu. Both easy on the eye and definitely gone in 60 seconds.

The apricot dish blends textures, colours and different sensations in the mouth as well as offering a great palette cleanse after the heavier Italian flavours.

Yoghurt Mousse

Tiramisu, well what Italian supper would be complete without one. Danilo’s take on this timeless classic has the perfect balance of booze and creaminess with a subtle but welcome side of coffee ice cream to round it off nicely.

Tiramisu

All in all a unique and special evening, from the inviting host to the impeccable cooking and service.

If you want an unforgettable evening make sure you check out The London Foodie for his outstanding hospitality and supper clubs.

Bean & Wheat by Adam Handling Launching Today

Opening just around the corner from his successful restaurant The Frog E1, Adam Handling is currently making his mark all over The City with his latest venture Bean & Wheat opening just round the corner in Liverpool Street. Bean & Wheat will be a more casual affair serving coffee roasted in London and breakfast and lunch to eat in or take-away made with local artisanal produce. The best thing about Bean & Wheat is that they have a ‘no waste’ philosophy with the selection of sweet and savoury toppings made with the off-cuts and by products from the kitchen at The Frog E1 meaning the fillings will be changed daily. To give you an idea, salads served in the café will be made with cauliflower stalks, which are usually thrown away by kitchens. Cakes will be baked fresh every morning and Adam will be serving his very own cold-pressed juices, Black & White. Again, his range of juices uses only fruits and veg which are slightly misshapen so therefore would have been thrown out by restaurants.

So let’s save the fruit and help to reduce food wastage by supporting Adam Handling and Bean & Wheat

Monday to Friday

SugarSin Opens New Store In Brighton. We Try Out Their Sweets

We can have a sweet tooth at Frost so we jumped at the chance to review some SugarSin Sweets. Their packaging is great and the sweets always look delicious. We tried Sicilian Lemon White Chocolate, Handmade Lollies, Sparkling Rosé Gummies and Fizzy Prosecco Gummies. The chocolate is divine, with the perfect amount of lemon, the handmade lollies are both fun and yummy. The gummies are as unique as they are yummy. The Rosé ones are soft and refreshing. The Prosecco ones are hard with just the right amount of tang. All are highly recommended. Delicious and naughty: what more could you ask for?

SugarSin co-founders and sisters Anna Nilsson and Josefin Deckel have opened SugarSin Brighton on Duke Street, in the stunning historic quarter of the city.

SugarSin opened the doors to its first sweet shop in London’s Covent Garden in 2011. The concept was born from a lifelong passion for all things sweet and tasty. Disappointed, in particular by the Pick‘n’Mix selection available in the UK, Anna and Josefin worked to create a modern Willy Wonka style store, filled with the world’s most fabulous sweets. The sisters travelled the globe tasting countless varieties, on a mission to create the most distinctive and delicious grown-up, gourmet confectionery collection, as beautiful to look at as it is to taste.

Anna, co-founder of SugarSin comments “We love Brighton – the city is as colourful as our sweets! As soon as we arrived it felt like home and the perfect fit for our second SugarSin store. We are so passionate about sweets that we thought it was time to share that passion with a new city. Since 2011 we have made it our mission to bring current, quality sweets and flavours, with inherent style and plenty of temptation to the people of London, but sweets are made for sharing! For those who doesn’t know us, inspired by our Swedish roots, we produce high quality sweets with intense flavours, great textures and natural ingredients. Josefin and I are extremely excited to open the doors to SugarSin Brighton next weekend!”

The beautifully contemporary store on Duke Street will be filled with SugarSin’s own handmade sweets including:

  • Prosecco Gummies
  • Sea Salt Fudge
  • Juicy Strawberry Lollies
  • Cocoa Dusted Chocolate Almonds

A carefully curated Pick’n’Mix featuring hundreds of nostalgic favourites and flavours to surprise, sourced from all over the world will take centre stage.

Mindful of dietary requirements, SugarSin Brighton, like the London store, will stock sweets suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

An Authentic Mexican Experience: Peyotito Review

After paying homage to our favourite cocktail, the Margarita, we decided to tail end National Margarita week with a trip to one of London’s most hotly tipped Mexican restaurants, Peyotito. As well as delving into their perfectly executed cocktail collection, we also ventured into their predominantly gluten and dairy-free menu to get a taste of the honest flavours of Mexico.

fullsizeoutput_e01

Having sampled many a Tex-Mex menu travelling through America, it’s not easy to come across Mexican cuisine outside of Mexico which is truly accurate and it’s something I certainly find lacking in London. Well thank goodness for Peyotito and well done to them for restoring the reputation of Mexican cuisine. The menu is a far cry from burritos and chimichangas and something much more accurate to the authentic dishes of Modern Mexico without the Texan twist and it goes without saying, the drinks list is authentically Mexican too.

fullsizeoutput_e00

Our favourite, the signature ‘Peyotito’ Margarita made with Mezcal instead of Tequila, packs a smokier punch than tequila but much more evocative of true Mexican style. You’re encouraged to sip slowly rather than knock it back and my favourite touch is that the ‘Peyotito’ Margarita contains a vial of mezcal inside your glass to add as you please or to enjoy on the side. Tajin coats the rim of the margarita which completes the well rounded flavour profile. Mezcal is much appreciated here at Peyotito with the old Mexican saying: Tequila to wake the living, Mescal to wake the dead’ emblazoned on it’s wall, gives you an idea of how to drink and dine the Mexican way and I thoroughly recommend trying some of the mescals they have on offer. Famously it’s the only spirit to not give you a hangover.

It’s the little of touches that really add class and panache to a place like Peyotito, which is the sister venue of Mayfair’s Peyote. Set in an indoor garden-like haven, you’re really a far cry from having mariachis and sombreros thrust in your face which is a rarity. On arrival you are presented with corn chips and three different accompaniments, Salsa Verde, a deeper, smokier and fiery chilli dip and a refreshing peanut dip. The chilli dip comes with a warning and with the deep flavours of Habanero which comes before the heat, it’s hard to not want to keep delving back in to experience the richness of the sauce. We recommend going for a bowl of their chunky Guacamole on the side to offset the heat.

Our waitress gave us a run down of all that was on their menu and recommended that most of the dishes are good for sharing. We were keen on trying a lot of what was on their menu and there really was a varied and mouth-watering selection. In terms of smaller dishes, they offer a couple of soups dishes, salads and crudo which is mainly comprised of sushi-grade yellowfin tuna but true to Mexican style served alongside corn, avocado and salsa. We decided to go for one of three ceviches on offer their signature dish, which is a scallop ceviche made with fresh coconut, cucumber and serrano chile. We then opted for a fish taco and a 24 hour braised lamb taco and from the mole side of the menu which means cooked in a sauce, we opted for the short rib.

BLANCO

When the food arrived it’s presented with no extra frills, simple, authentic and naturally stunning. The colours of the tacos and the different ingredients just bounce off the table. The portions are reasonable, not heavy but also bursting with zesty and vibrant flavours. A real feast for your eyes, there be no heavily starchy food here covered in cheese with a side of beans. This is really impressive, honest cooking made with typical Mexican flavours and enough to transport you straight to the food carts of Oaxaca. The first thing you notice when you start your dining experience is at how fresh everything tastes and how well balanced all of the dishes are.The food is of the highest quality and this is noticeable from dish to dish. Having chosen the signature ceviche dish ‘Blanco’ it was interesting to see how the delicate flavour of scallop would be complimented but the coconut, cucumber and chile are not overbearing in the slightest. The coconut is presented as an almost delicate soup in the bottom of the shell and is just the right combination of zesty and subtle.

fullsizeoutput_e02

Both taco dishes are presented on soft corn tacos, which I much prefer to it’s crunchy counterpart, the dishes are easily manageable with a knife and fork here. The sea bream is well cooked with a crispy skin left on and soft fish melting underneath. Bravo for our skin-on fish tacos this is much appreciated and adds an extra complementary texture to an already stand out dish. The lamb tacos are also robust in flavour bursting with a herbaceous yet smoky and sweet note; every mouthful is as divine as the last. The short rib is decadent, presented in a similar style to a beef dish you may encounter in a french bistro it’s full of the rich, chocolatey mole and served alongside seasonal veg. It personally resembled an elegant Sunday roast but with a flaky, fondant meat served with intense robust flavours of mole. After making our way through the dishes, we were happily full and well satisfied at the varied selection we had chosen but opted to go for the Flan De Vanilla to share. This baked custard dish was creamy, more-ish but still light, a theme which seems to go through all of the dishes we tried.

IMG_8386
If authentic Mexican dining is what you’re after with a side of London’s best Margarita, in my opinion, Peyotito is definitely the place to be. The restaurant is vibrant, attention to detail is on point and the dishes are honestly first class in terms of quality of the food, flavour and value for money. Great for a quiet date, dining alone or with a group of friends, the staff are attentive and will make sure your every need is catered for. It’s a refreshing change to a lot of Mexican restaurants I have tried in the city and also fills a gap of sophisticated Mexican dining with a much more laid back and edgy feel to it. So if a slice of authenticity is what you’re after make sure to make your rezzies at Peyotito.
