Rise of the Planet of the Apes: Film Review

The Planet of the Apes is a franchise that has been going strong since I was a kid. Actually, the original was one of my favourite films.

With scientists admitting that they were doing tests on monkeys, and fresh Daily Mail worries about animal/human hybrid experiments, it makes it all the more real and scary.

The Rise of the Planet of the Apes has the amazingly talented Andy Serkis as Caesar, and what a performance.

In support, James Franco plays Will Rodman, whose father, played by John Lithgow, has Alzheimers. Rodman tries desperately to cure his father and the key lies in Caesar who receives an amazing amount of intelligence and self awareness due to the the drug ALZ 112 previously injected into his mother. But the drug doesn’t get funded after Caesar’s mother seemingly turns violent and is killed.

But it’s Serkis’ Caesar who steals the film. We see him unsure of his place in the world, missing his family, feeling different, like an outsider and wondering why his kind are treated differently. Andy Serkis should be allowed the Oscar.

This film has been a runway success so far, taking $54.8m in its opening weekend. Deservedly too. It is a good film, lots of action, well acted and you care for the characters. ‘Rise’ is timely and good entertainment. In short, I recommend it for a perfect fun night out while definitely giving you something to think about over your post-film pizza.

Frisky Orangutan Molests Beast Man Host Pat Spain {TV}

Below is a hilarious clip from Nat Geo’s newest series ‘Beast Man’ starring presenter Pat Spain (aka. the Beast Man), a 29-year-old wildlife scientist  from the USA, and Pinkie, a frisky orangutan.

Following in the footsteps of his great uncle and famous paranormal investigator Charles Fort – the man who inspired  the Fortean Times, Pat’s investigating whether legendary myths of monsters are real after all and is happy to get hands on in the spirit of the exploration!

In ‘Beast Man’ he  travels to the world’s remote corners and uses cutting-edge technology to search for creatures unknown to science. Could monsters really be lurking in the wilderness? What monsters are we talking about? and why is Pat visiting Orangutans? I’m sure all will be revealed.

Beast Man airs from Monday 7th Feb at 8pm on Nat Geo Wild


Animal Art de Jour – Monkeys and Mutant Rabbits {Art}

It seems the world is going animal art crazy and the following two pieces are possibly the most unusual.

This giant passed out monkey is made entirely of flip flops. Built in Sao Paulo Brazin to celebrate the Pixel Show (an international art and design conference). Obviously if anything represents art then it’s a gigantic drunk monkey.

Plush mutant rabbits by Zoe Williams. Not only does she trap the unusual weird little woodland creatures in frames, she also has a collection of mutant red peacocks and rams among other animals.
