Last Chance for Fiz in Soho…

 


We all dread the toll of the bell when “Last Orders” are up, but we’re here to give you plenty of notice to try out Fizbar in Soho for one last time before they close there doors this Saturday. London’s first sparkling wine bar opened it’s doors 9 weeks ago for a 10 week residency at iconic London haunt, Lights of Soho. Started by three friends, their quest was to bring a hint of Barcelona’s backstreet Cava bars to London. With a playful and eclectic list of international fizz, the aim was to take a step away from the pretentious wine bars and over-priced, bourgeois culture associated with drinking sparkles in the Capital. As well as a damn good list of drinks to make your way through, the food here is also well curated and carefully selected to pair with your drinks. The atmosphere here is like no other, you can enjoy your bubbles whilst watching the Chef’s cook your food to order right at the bar.

Just to give you an example of how eclectic this wine list was, we made our way from House Fiz which was a crisp Cava at £4.5 a glass all the way to the unusual ‘Black Queen’. Hailing from Barossa Valley Australia, Black Queen is a red fizz with hints of dark cherry and fruit. Not for the faint hearted, this was described by one of the owners as the Marmite of Fiz. There are of course a few Proseccos that feature on the menu but our stand out fizz by far was a lot closer to home, all the way from Kent. Balfour Estate by Hush Heath winery in Kent was an example of something very elegant, dry and sophisticated. The production of this fizz is very similar to Champagne and is unsurprisingly award-winning. If an adventurous journey through fizz is more of what you’re after, there is something for everyone at Fiz, alongside the sparkling red, there is an Italian Sparkling wine with notes of lemon and lime and also something from Brazil too. The wines on the list go from £4.5-£10 a glass to give you an idea of how casual and affordable this joint is. The food offerings include a cheese board, a meat board and a selection of sliders to name a few, we recommend the Pastrami which we are told is made on site. As well as a bottomless brunch available on the weekend. We really enjoyed the little quirks and added extras to the place including a couple of alcoholic ice pops to choose from and of course the striking backdrop that is Lights of Soho featuring many neon light designs.

Whisky Lovers gather round for The London Whisky Weekender 1st-3rd April

Celebrate the end of a four-day week with a toast of some of the finest Whisky’s from around the world. The London Whisky Weekender is back and returns to the popular East London venue, The Oval Space. From only £30 ticket-holders can revel in trying a whole host of new and traditional Whisky’s from American bourbons through to Japanese, Irish, Scotch and more. Madame LA LA is introducing a pop-up Self -Tanning Bar to Selfridges.

Located in the luxury department store’s Beauty Workshop from August 10-16, the Madame LA LA team will be offering on-the-spot tanning and skin prepping with a focus on the face and décolletage.

They will also be delivering ten minute self-tan masterclasses on pre-tanning preparation and how to achieve a ‘half-body’ look.

Products used will be the brand’s new West Coast Bronzing Serum (£28) with coco water and green tea and Madame LA LA Tan (£36), a lightweight mousse tan perfector with aloe.

Premium beauty brand Clinique has announced the opening of its Clinique PopStop! pop up shop in Piccadilly Circus Underground Station from today (August 4).

Clinique PopStop! is Clinique’s UK first underground pop up shop.

The Clinique Pop Stop will enable commuters to touch up on the go with Clinique’s Express Service Menu or browse and shop the newest additions to Clinique’s colour portfolio.

The Express Service Menu offers custom-fit, three-minute pick me ups including; Pick Your Pout, In a Wink and Sweet Cheeks.

 As I headed towards Potters Field I heard beautiful Mexican music and already saw the bright colours and statues. There were crowds everywhere. The exhibition had certainly caught the attention of Londoners who were having lots of fun. There was a huge queue at the Wahaca truck for burritos and nachos. But it is not all food, statues and music. There is an immersive pop-up pavilion in London’s South Bank. It is a multi-media experience and is not just educational but also tons of fun. You learn all about Mexico through state-of-the-art innovation, using cutting-edge modern technology. Best of all, it’s free!

 Inside the dome is a very cool colourful car, clothes, the opportunity to experience Mexico City, lots of art and lots of other immersive media. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. I had a great time and I learned a lot. I definitely want to head to Mexico now. It has made its way onto my bucket list as it is so beautiful. Mexico has a lot going for it.

Pickled Fork Pop Up Restaurant Review

Salt Beef ‘Sandwhich’, Grilled Corn Bread, Home Smoked Streaky Bacon, TPF’s Grain Mustard, Kohirabi & Cucumber Slaw

We recently went to a pop up restaurant in the Barmouth Kitchen hosted by the Pickled Fork chef Alex Motture. If you haven’t been to a pop up restaurant you should try it, it’s great fun.

You bring your own alcohol and the focus is entirely on food. Alex grew up in Australia and he has cooked in kitchens all around the world.

The first course were these delicious meat balls you can see below, all washed down with a glass of ale from the local brewery. A great combination and it got our taste buds tingling for the next course.

Next was a Salt Beef ‘Sandwhich’ with grilled corn, smoked bacon, mustard and a kohirabi (turnip cabbage) & cucumber slaw. The beef was delicious and Alex’s combination of flavours and textures was exceptional. Passion and attention for detail were immediately apparent. He had clearly gone to great lengths to source the right ingredients.

Next up is a dish I will remember for a very long time. A beautiful piece of Hake, not a fish I eat regularly but this was something particularly special. The Hake was salty firm and incredibly succulent. Combined with the tomatoes, tomato liquor, Dill Granois and Dill Mayonnaise it was a beautifully balanced combination full of incredible flavour. A total triumph and a dish which really showed off the chef’s incredible skill.

The third course was pork belly with cherries, crushed courgette & watercress relish. Alex had cooked his pork belly perfectly a difficult feat many chefs often get it wrong. It was crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle. It went beautifully with the sweetness of the cherry.

For pudding we had Beetroot & Carob parfait, redcurrant smoothie and beetroot crunch. It was another unique experience and unlike anything I had ever tasted before. The beetroot parfait was earthy yet sweet and very tasty.

It was a wonderful experience of fantastic food. This was very high end cooking by a very talented young chef. We liked the food so much we hired Alex as the caterer for our wedding. If that’s not an endorsement I don’t know what is.

Alex’s food was exceptional but he’s incredibly easy going and friendly. He spent a lot of time out of the kitchen talking with all the guests. His passion for food was clear.
