Words for the Wounded Independent Author Book Award Part 2

As I said last week, The Independent Author Book Award has been a revelation. There are just so many good writers out there, which made our task hugely enjoyable, if difficult. At last we decided on commended, highly commended, and then – the winners. In the end, our decision was unanimous. Great books all three of them. Thank you all so much for entering – rest assured that 100% of the entry fees go to the wounded.

Last week we highlighted First Place achieved by Jane Cable with The Cheesemaker’s House, in the recent competition. Today we have the second place winner, Janet O’Kane.

Thank you, Palamedes PR for sponsoring a professional press release for the winner, and the opportunity of a discounted press release for 2nd and 3rd. Thank you Frost Magazine for publishing a review of the top three.

The great good news is that Felicity Trew, of the highly respected Caroline Sheldon Literary Agency, is now representing the winner, Jane Cable.

We’re totally delighted to reveal that Felicity Trew will also be our final judge for the 2015 Independent Author Book Award. The WforW team is so excited.

2nd Place.

No Stranger to Death  by  Janet O’Kane

Zoe Moreland is a GP who stumbles upon a corpse.  Set in the Scottish Borders,  her own life experience is revealed, alongside the unfolding crime story.

No Stranger to Death  Janet O’Kane

Judges’ comments. A crime novel must grab you from the first sentence. This one does: “Zoe Moreland saw her first dead body at the age of twelve … “ You also need a reason for the person to be consulted or somehow involved with a dead body, especially if you want to keep open the possibility of a series. Tick number two: she’s a GP. This sets everything up well for a crime novel and the other necessities for any novel, including  interesting setting described with a vivid sense of place (the Scottish Borders) and rounded characters with distinctive personalities and back stories which appear gradually, are all here. Tick, tick, tick. We particularly liked the way Janet O’Kane lets facts and personalities emerge naturally, by incremental details rather than through the dreaded information download. She credits the reader with the ability to put details together. This crime novel has a well-constructed plot with interesting characters and we look forward to reading the next one in the series. Well done.

When Janet O’Kane outgrew Enid Blyton’s books she moved on to what her Mum liked reading: crime novels. And despite occasional dalliances with other types of fiction, that’s where she has happily stayed.

Her career before turning to writing full-time included selling underpants to Roger Moore in Harrods of Knightsbridge and marketing nappies for Boots the Chemist. It was when she helped run a GP surgery that she decided a doctor would make an excellent main character for a series of crime novels.

Janet lives in the Scottish Borders with her stonemason husband, a cat, two dogs and far too many chickens. She is now writing the sequel to No Stranger to Death and learning to tap-dance. She’s delighted to have been placed second in a competition which raises money for such a good cause.

Words For The Wounded Writing Prize

walking wounded competitionFrost Magazine has came across a very worthy charity thanks to Jane Cable: Words For The Wounded was launched by Margaret Graham, an author at Random House.

Margaret said; “I launched the charity Words for the Wounded  last year and we raise money via writing competitions and donations to help in the recovery of our wounded service personnel. This year we are supporting the Creative Arts Unit at Tedworth House Recovery Centre. Every penny from the entry fees and donations goes to the wounded. We raise money for the prizes in other ways. My son and son-in-law have been noble and done various Ironman marathons and Triathlons for us but this year my colleague and old school friend, Jan Speedie, and I are giving them a break and doing a tandem sky dive. Yes, I know. My grandchildren say the same, ‘You’re mad.’ But needs must.  My agent despairs of the lengths to which I will go to be strapped to a handsome young man.

Words for the Wounded has a 1st prize of £250, 2nd £100 and 3rd £50, and publication in Writers’ Forum magazine. Entry fee is £4.50. We ask for poetry, non-fiction or fiction up to a maximum of 400 words on the subject of The Journey. It can be physical, emotional or both. The closing date is 11 March.”

Margaret also has a W4W blog which includes writing tips www.wordsforthewounded.blogspot.co.uk.

Margaret went on to say that “the majority of those injured are under 25. These are life changing injuries and they will need help to recover their self-confidence and independence to get the best from their long lives.”

I am sure you will agree this is a great charity and an equally great competition. Enter now and spread the word.

Win a £5,000 Holiday or a Kindle.

Recession biting? In need of a holiday? Frost Magazine knows how you feel, so we thought we would let you know about this competition Yakult are doing.

BRITISH MEN NEED A BREAK!

(And Yakult’s £5,000 holiday giveaway is here to help)

68% of men in the UK are in need of a holiday, according to a new survey[1]. Whilst that might not be overly surprising, it is revealing to learn the extent to which British men are desperate to get away: when asked to name their one material desire for 2012, a dream holiday came only a very close second to a new car.

However, with purse strings being tightened across the country, it seems that many will be going without their longed-for break – for this year at least. 29% of men questioned stated that, due to economising, they would be cutting down on holidays abroad in 2012 – and over a third (35%) will not be holidaying abroad at all this year.

And yet a desire to discover more about the world remains as keen as ever – 68% of men questioned stated that they were curious to learn more about different countries and cultures across the globe. Despite this, over half state that they have yet to experience a ‘dream holiday’– and so it seems high time that British men got a chance to experience the break they so desire.

And that’s where Yakult’s brand new competition comes in! Showcasing the fact that Yakult is available in 32 countries across the globe, ‘Around the World with Yakult’ is offering one lucky winner the chance to jet off on a £5,000 dream holiday. Another five winners will each receive a Kindle, complete with £20 credit.

To enter this exciting competition, would-be jetsetters simply need to visit www.yakult.co.uk/world and guess the location of the ‘mystery Yakult country’.

Each month, a Yakult employee will give a personal insight into a fascinating Yakult project taking place in their particular country – and offer clues as to the location. (The competition is free to enter and no purchase is necessary.) Every month until August, one lucky winner will receive a Kindle (plus £20 credit) – and then in September, all correct entries will go into a draw for the £5,000 grand prize!
