The World’s Smallest Publisher Fair Is Coming to London This June

Tangerine Press is delighted to announce the return of The Uncorrected Independent Publishers’ Fair (TUIPF), the world’s smallest publisher fair, showcasing a selected number of independent presses from across the UK. The fifth Uncorrected Independent Publishers’ Fair will take place on 11 June 2022 at Peckham Pelican, as part of the Camberwell Arts Festival.

Featuring seven of the most exciting and innovative indie publishers operating in the UK, the line-up features the following presses: flipped eye publishing (powerful poetry, fiction and prose in affordable volumes), Les Fugitives(contemporary literary fiction & non-fiction translated from the French), Prototype (fiction, poetry and interdisciplinary projects), Repeater Books (radical books for a wide readership), Rough Trade Books (sister to the pioneering independent record label), Strange Attractor (celebrating unpopular culture) and Tangerine Press.

 

Taking place at the café and art space the Peckham Pelican – an open, friendly bar serving good quality beers, ciders, wine, coffee and food available all day – TUIPF is free to attend and open to all. This unique literary feast caters for all genres and needs: prose, poetry, fiction and photography books will all be on sale, with special event prices on paperbacks, hardback limited editions, artist books, broadsides, screen-prints and letterpress gems.

 

 

 

In addition to book sales and general merriment, TUIPF is proud to present a line-up of indie entertainment: live readings by authors published by the seven indie publishers will start from 2pm, including Erica Van Horn (Les Fugitives), Astrid Alben (Prototype) and Arianna Reiche (Tangerine Press). From 4pm, the special guest Unexplained Podcast, the popular story-based podcast in which host and creator Richard MacLean Smith explores a different unexplained mystery each week, will perform a live reading of their episode “Hexham Heads”, examining strange events in 1970s Northumberland. From 4.30pm, there will be an acoustic set by the alternative indie UK-based band Lilies in by Brain.

Then perhaps sit up and be drawn into a rare live performance of the Unexplained podcast. Finally round it off with an acoustic set by promising indie newcomers Lilies in my Brain. Jane Cable writes from the Romantic Novelists’ Association ConferenceI’m conferenced out. There, I’ve said it now. Suffering from serious information overload but in a very good way. So many fascinating sessions, so many interesting new people to meet. And so much wine to drink – the organisers ordered a mere 600 bottles for the weekend. Not to mention the stocks in the fridges in our own kitchens. Yes, it was a little like rolling back the years and being a student again.The first session after the official conference opening was a state of the industry address and the key messages have interest for writers in every genre, not just romance. Major trends seem to be for shorter books – gone are the doorstops of yesteryear, despite the increase in audio and ebook meaning we don’t have to carry them around anymore. And genres are blurring too – thanks to the rise and rise of indie publishing, even the major houses are beginning to understand that readers are becoming more adventurous.But of particular interest to me was the advice each panellist gave to the assembled authors. Here’s who they were and what they said.

Isobel Dixon (Head of Books and Director of the Blake Friedmann Literary Agency):
Persevere – there is much more flexibility in the market in every way. And once your book is out there, be generous with your readers.

Sam Missingham (former digital project manager at Harper Collins who has just founded @lounge_books, which she describes as a home for book lovers)
Build your own audience platforms, whatever the stage of your career. You can’t waste your time on social media.

Broo Doherty (literary agent at DHH)
Don’t take rejection personally. Believe in yourself.

Rosie de Courcy (fiction publisher at Head of Zeus)
Try to create your own world, somewhere you can write the same but different year after year.

Emily Yau (commissioning editor on fiction lists at Ebury Publishing)
Read as much as you can – in and out of your genre. Understand where your book sits in the market and why it’s special.

Men’s Fitness magazine Gets a Redesign.

This article is not an excuse for a picture of a half-naked male model for my readers…oh, okay, maybe a little.

Men’s Fitness magazine, the UK’s leading fitness lifestyle title has had a comprehensive redesign for the August 2012 issue.

The magazine will still contain the same excellent fitness and nutrition advice but it will be delivered in a fresh and modern way.

The redesign reflects the positive development of the Men’s Fitness brand and will make the most of the authoritative, expert content.

New readers will find the magazine more accessible while loyal readers will get the same great fitness and nutrition advice that they have come to expect from Men’s Fitness magazine.

The redesign is just one of many developments for the Men’s Fitness brand, which recently increased its monthly brand reach by 16% to 1.2million. Congratulations guys, what an achievement.

Prose & Cons: A Melancholic Comedy

After the success of Bridesmaids, a new wave of films with strong female characters are hitting cinema screens. Prose & Cons is a black, melancholic comedy set in the world of artistic frustration and writers block.

Sarah [Played by Catherine Balavage] is one of the new waves of poets. Her book sold millions of copies, but now she hasn’t written anything for over 160 days, and her publisher is getting restless. After an ultimatum from her publisher, and a horrendous poetry reading that went viral on twitter and YouTube, Sarah becomes increasingly desperate for new material. Her actions have far-reaching consequences that will change the lives of all of those around her.

Directed by Richard Wright and produced and written by Richard and Catherine; Prose & Cons is a film about writer’s block, consequences, friends and the resilience of typewriters.
