Over Three Quarters of the 50 Richest People Under 30 didn’t go to University

Young, rich, and famous: that’s what everyone wants to be, right? But while we all want to ‘get rich’, there’s no one, clear path to going about it. Some people are born rich, some will work incredibly hard to become rich, while others are just plain lucky. So, is there any secret to it? Does it all depend on what kind of education you had? Is private school necessarily ‘better’ than state school? Should you go to university, or could it actually be a waste of money? Do some professions make you richer than others? Are there any short cuts?

The questions are endless. However, creators of eco classrooms and modular school buildings TG Escapes, decided to analyse the backgrounds of the 50 richest people under thirty, who appear in this year’s Sunday Times Young Rich List, and they made some very interesting discoveries…

Firstly, only 34 out of the 50 (that’s over two thirds) went to state schools, proving that you don’t necessarily have to pay for a ‘better’ education to end up rich. If you have talent and skill, then that will take you far; just look at the likes of footballer Wayne Rooney (6th on the list, worth £96m), singer Ellie Goulding (at number 39, she’s worth £17m) or boxer Amir Khan (worth £18m, at number 36); they all went to state school, but clearly already had an innate talent that shone through.

And an even greater proportion of people (76%), didn’t go to university. Perhaps that’s not too surprising, given the crippling fees it costs these days, but it certainly didn’t do the likes of older, successful entrepreneurs like Sir Alan Sugar or Sir Richard Branson any harm; following in their path are the likes of techpreneur Pete Cashmore, who founded tech blog Mashable (and, at number 5 on the list, is worth a staggering £170m).

What is also inspiring is that 42 of them (84%) are totally self-made, and didn’t inherit family wealth. This can’t be said for the person at the top of the list, 30 year Tom Persson – who’s worth a whopping £672m – because he’s part of the family who own fashion label H&M. But for the majority of sports stars, or musicians, many of whom come from relatively humble backgrounds, they’ve made their wealth on their own, thanks to their skill. Footballer Gareth Bale, for example, amassed his £34m fortune (no 17 on the list) himself, while the four current members of One Direction are all worth £33m (at no 18).

So what are the professions which will make us the richest? Well, 40% of those on the list are in sport, while 37.5% are involved in creative industries such as film (like Emma Watson, no 16 on the list with £35m), music (like Ed Sheeran, no 14 with £45m), or fashion (such as model sisters Cara and Poppy Delevingne (worth £14m between them, at no 49). Two per cent are lottery winners, Nottinghamshire couple Matt and Cassey Topham, who won a £45m Euromillions draw in 2012.

But perhaps more soberingly, only 10% of the people on list work in industry – in electricals, property or cars – such as 28 year old Thomas Mackie, who runs the electrical goods wholesaling company his grandfather started in Kenilworth and has built it up so much that his net worth is now £380m (putting him at no 3 on the list).

‘There are obviously a variety of ways to become rich and successful,’ says Richard Harvey, Managing Director at TG Escapes: ‘Good, hard graft rewards many, and talent will get you far, too. However, it’s a little sad if young people reading this think that the only way to make money is to become a pop star, actor or sportsperson, which couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s worth sticking with an education for as long as you can, which will give you so many more options later in life.’

 

 

27th Annual Sunday Times Rich List 2015 Who Made It?

Still touring at the age of 72, Sir Paul McCartney is the wealthiest entertainer in Britain and Ireland with a £730m fortune which is boosted by the personal wealth of his wife Nancy Shevell, who has a £150m stake in her family’s US trucking business.

 

The fortunes of the richest performers and composers – old and young – are revealed in the 27th annual Sunday Times Rich List – the definitive guide to wealth in Britain and Ireland – published this weekend, on April 26, in a special 128-page issue of The Sunday Times Magazine.

 

Newcomer to the top 40 music millionaires chart is Dumfries-born DJ Calvin Harris, aged 31 and worth £70m. Harris is reported to earn up to $1m a night as the world’s highest-paid DJ, appearing in clubs and at festivals from Las Vegas to Ibiza. Last year, he became the first UK solo artist to clock up more than a billion Spotify streams, worth £4m, and his track Summer was the number one iTunes download in 40 territories.

 

The four members of Dublin band U2 – Paul Hewson (Bono), 54, Adam Clayton, 55, Dave Evans (the Edge), 53, and Larry Mullen, 53 – have made most of their £431m fortune from touring. Guy Berryman, 38, Johnny Buckland, 37, Will Champion, 36, and Chris Martin, 38, the four members of Coldplay are each worth £52m, giving them a combined fortune of £208m.

 

The wealth of Phil Collins, 64, is down by £5m this year to £110m because the Geneva-based former drummer and singer with Genesis, who has sold 250m records, has announced that he has given some of his fortune to his children.

Singer and songwriter Adele, aged 26, heads the list of young musicians with a £50m fortune, up £5m on last year. Each member of One Direction has seen their personal wealth grow by £11m in the past 12 months, giving the four current members of the band – Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson – a combined fortune of £100m. Zayn Malik, who left One Direction last month, is also worth £25m.

 

At £45m, Arctic Monkeys are the second wealthiest young band, with Matt Helders and Nick O’Malley each worth £10m, while Jamie Cook shares a £12m fortune with his wife Katie Downes, who has made £2m from her career as a model. Alex Turner, who has other music interests, is worth £13m.

 

Mumford and Sons, worth a total of £37m, are the third richest young band in Britain and Ireland, aged 30 and under. Band members Ted Dwane, Ben Lovett and Winston Marshall are each worth £8m, while Marcus Mumford is jointly worth £13m with his wife Carey Mulligan.

 

Although no longer performing, the four members of JLS have a combined fortune of £30m. JB Gill, Aston Merrygold and Oritse Williams are each worth £7m, while Marvin Humes shares a £9m fortune with his wife Rochelle, who is a member of the Saturdays.

 

The only newcomer to the Young Musicians Rich List is 22-year-old singing sensation Sam Smith. The Cambridgeshire crooner, who writes his own material and won two Brit Awards and four Grammys last year, already his £12m to his name on the strength of album sales and future tours.

The 2015 Sunday Times Rich List – the definitive guide to wealth in Britain and Ireland – is published on Sunday, April 26. The 128-page special edition of The Sunday Times Magazine is the biggest issue of the Rich List ever published since it first appeared in 1989. Sir Paul McCartney, now 71 and still touring, has added £30m to the wealth he shares with his third wife, Nancy, 53. With Shevell’s £150m stake in her family’s American trucking operation, the couple’s fortune stands at £710m.  The 2014 chart of the 50 wealthiest music millionaires in Britain and Ireland is published in The Sunday Times Rich List 2014 this Sunday, May 18.

 

Rising quickly up the list is Simon Cowell, worth £300m. His contracts for ITV’s X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent have helped to boost his fortune by £50m in a year. The success of the Ministry of Sound record label and brand has helped to add £70m to the wealth of Lord Palumbo, the Liberal Democrat peer, who is now worth £270m.

 

The combined wealth of Irish band U2 is down by £92m at £428m after the retirement of Paul McGuinness, their former manager, who now appears in the Music Millionaires Rich List in his own right with a £104m fortune. However, the individual wealth of the four band members, Paul Hewson (Bono), Adam Clayton, Dave Evans (the Edge) and Larry Mullen, has gone up £3m each, as last year they shared a joint fortune of £520m with McGuinness.

 

Mohammad and Kamaliya Zahoor, worth £300m, join the music wealth chart on the strength of Ukranian singer Kamaliya’s burgeoning pop career, funded by her entrepreneur husband Mohammad, who is a British-Pakistani citizen. Music mogul Roger Ames, who runs part of Live Nation, the concert search engine, returns to the list with a £120m fortune. David Bowie’s latest album The Next Day, which reached No 1 in the UK last year, helped to boost his fortune by £20m and for the first time we include the £15m fortune of his wife Iman Abdulmajid, to put the couple’s total wealth this year at £135m.

 

Take That singer Gary Barlow, who was worth just £30m in 2009, has added £5m to his wealth in the past year, bringing his personal fortune to £65m. We make no deduction to his wealth for the recent court ruling on tax avoidance until the matter is fully resolved.

Singer Adele, 26, heads the list of young musicians, aged 30 and under, with a £45m fortune, up 50% (£15m) on last year, with continued success from album sales.

 

She is £15m ahead of the highest new entry to the young musicians list, Calvin Harris. The Scottish hit-maker and superstar DJ has had no less than nine top 10 hits from his current album, 18 months – the most from a single album in chart history. Now able to charge a reported $200,000 for a night’s work as a DJ in Las Vegas or Miami, Harris formerly stacked shelves in Marks & Spencer.

 

The combined wealth of the five members of One Direction is £70m, making 1D the richest boy band in history from Britain and Ireland. Niall Horan, 20, Zayn Malik, 21, Liam Payne, 20, Harry Styles 20, and Louis Tomlinson, 22, are each worth £14m. In 2013, the combined fortune of the band was just £25m, with each member worth £5m.

 

The four members of Mumford and Sons, all new entries to the Young Musicians Rich List, share a £37m fortune. Marcus Mumford, 27, and his actress wife, Carey Mulligan, 28, are jointly worth £13m, while Ted Dwane, 29, Ben Lovett, 27, and Winston Marshall, 26, are each worth £8m.

 

Third in the list of the wealthiest young bands is Sheffield indie rock band Arctic Monkeys, with a combined fortune of £30m. Jamie Cook, 28, Matt Helders 28, and Nick O’Malley, 28, are each worth £7m, while Alex Turner, 28, who has other music interests, is worth £9m.

 

The four members of JLS, JB Gill, 27, Marvin Humes, 29, Aston Merrygold, 26, and Oritse Williams, 27, are each worth £7m, putting their combined wealth at £28m.

X-Factor judge Simon Cowell has amassed a personal fortune of £200m to place him at number six in the annual Music Millionaires Top 50, published in The Sunday Times Rich List 2011 this weekend.

The 23rdannual Sunday Times Rich List – the definitive guide to wealth in Britain and Ireland – is published as an extra 104-page magazine, free with the paper on Sunday.

The Music Millionaires Top 50 is headed by Clive Calder, with a £1,300m fortune made from the sale of Zomba Records in 2002. New entries include AC/DC’s lead singer Brian Johnson, born in Gateshead, who is worth £50m, and Moya Doherty and John McColgan, worth £70m, who own the Irish dance show Riverdance.

Katherine Jenkins, worth £13m – up £2m on 2010, tops the young music millionaires chart of people aged 30 and under ahead of Cheryl Cole, Leona Lewis and Katie Melua, who all have £12m fortunes. The top new entry in the young music millionaires chart is Adele at ninth equal with a £6m fortune. Two more new entries are Taio Cruz and Florence Welch, each worth £5m.

U2 with a combined fortune of £455m, up by £26m from last year – see table below, head the list of Irish music millionaires who appear among Ireland’s Richest 250 in The Sunday Times Rich List 2011.

The list is based on identifiable wealth (land, property, other assets such as art and racehorses, or significant shares in publicly quoted companies), and excludes bank accounts (to which the paper has no access).

The Sunday Times Rich List 2011 is compiled by Philip Beresford, the leading authority on British wealth, and edited by Ian Coxon. Ireland’s richest 250 is compiled by Colm Murphy.
