Is It Really ‘Cause For Concern’ When a Supermodel Loses Her Baby Weight In 2 Months?

I don’t think it really has to be said that supermodels aren’t like normal people. They are taller for one. While the vast majority of the women in the world are under 5.6′, that is considered short in supermodel terms. Then they are generally thin and beautiful. The very top of the gene pool. So should we compare ourselves to them? In some ways, yes. Controversial I know, but the training regime of the Victoria Secret Models would put some athletes to shame. I never thought there was anything wrong with aspiration. It is a models job to be thin and fit. Which is why I don’t get the controversy surrounding Russian supermodel Elena Perminova who stripped off for Vogue Russia two months after giving birth to reveal a stunning post-pregnancy figure.

Supermodel-Elena-Perminova-before-andafterpregnancy, pregnancy, post birth body,

In the first image, Elena is eight months pregnant. The second image is two months later. (Credit: Russian Vogue)

I am seven-months pregnant at the moment. I didn’t look like Elena before I was pregnant, and I won’t look like her after being pregnant. The truth is, genes play a role, but I will exercise and eat well. I have lost weight before, for my wedding last year. I had put two stone on after a back injury and despite having a full-time job and writing a book amongst a million other things, I exercised five days a week for at least an hour and lost all of the weight within months. I didn’t diet or deprive myself but I put the work in and pretty much hated every second. But is Elena being irresponsible? A debate started online with some people saying that she was promoting a lifestyle that was unrealistic for new mothers. The 28-year-old model is married to Russian millionaire businessman Alexander Lebedev and this was her third child. She started a hardcore 7-days-a-week exercise regime a mere two weeks after having her baby by caesarian last year. The article also featured advice to Russian women on how to get their figure back after pregnancy. Elena said in Russian Vogue, ‘Normally doctors say “yes” to sport only three months after giving birth. ‘But I started earlier, just two weeks afterwards, even though I had a caesarian. The doctor allowed me to do it because I felt very well. Naturally, at first I was not exercising a lot, or there was a risk to breastfeeding. And the main thing – I did not exercise my stomach. It is dangerous to do it right after birth.’

Elena did simple repetitive exercises while her daughter Arina slept, and jogged for two hours a day with her husband while on a holiday in Cyprus. He mother-in-law looked after the baby. She said the jogging got rid of her baby weight and the water in her body by helping her ‘dry out’. She ate ‘simple homemade fare, for example, steamed fish with lemon juice.’ Many Vogue readers praised her hard work but many others said she was promoting an unrealistic example. But does a supermodel have to set realistic examples? Is there anything wrong with being aspirational or losing weight quickly, especially when it is part of your job? The truth is: the average new mum doesn’t need to lose weight quickly as our career does not depend on it. We get to eat cake and be tired. We get to sleep and just watch TV when we have time. So is it irresponsible? Let us know your thoughts below.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley brings touch of glamour to Paris Motor Show

DATE: Wednesday 1st October, 2014

  • British supermodel and actress showcases new premium compact SUV on River Seine
  • Giant barge with 4.5 metre Wellington boots brings uniquely British sense of fun to French capital

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley today swapped the catwalks of Paris Fashion Week for the River Seine as she showcased the Land Rover Discovery Sport in its uniquely British public debut.

The 27 year-old supermodel and actress brought her inimitable style to the French capital as she was seen stepping from one of a pair of Discovery Sports aboard a giant barge moored in the centre of the city.

The former Victoria’s Secret model, also known for her role in TransformersDark of the Moon and the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road, was stood flanked by seven pairs of brightly coloured, giant-sized Wellington boots – some as tall as 4.5 metres. The boots, a creative reference to both the Discovery’s versatile seating layout and Land Rover’s unique take on outdoor life, brought a sense of quintessential British heritage and humour to the Rive Gauche.

After revealing Discovery Sport to the world’s media for the first time, the 80-metre long barge continued to turn heads on its attention-grabbing journey down the River Seine, cruising past Parisian landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and Notre-Dame Cathedral.

The Paris debut of the new Discovery Sport follows the digital reveal of the vehicle last month, which included Land Rover’s Galactic Discovery competition – giving four friends the chance to win a once-in-a-lifetime trip to space with Land Rover’s global partner, Virgin Galactic.

Peter Lindbergh Interview | Exclusive

Peter Lindberg Interview, Mary Greenwell interviewHe is one of the most famous fashion photographers in the world. Peter Lindbergh, 69, went down in history with his black-and-white photos of the young Kate Moss and group images of the supermodels in the ‘90s. For the Silhouette “An Icon for an Icon” campaign, he shot Hollywood star Cate Blanchett. In this interview Peter Lindbergh talks about his inspiration for the Icon shoot, working with the Oscar winner and why an emotional link is so vital to a good photo.

Who are easier to photograph – professional models or actors?

Actually it’s easier to photograph models because they’re used to looking directly into the camera. Posing is their job. With actors, it’s often a different story. They aren’t used to looking at the camera front on. But, that doesn’t matter – that’s the challenge.

For the Silhouette campaign, you put Hollywood actress Cate Blanchett in the limelight. What was it like working with her?

Cate is simply great. She’s so natural and doesn’t act like a ‘star’ at all. That makes working with her so nice. Or maybe it’s because she’s Australian. All the uncomplicated people I have worked with up to now come from either Australia or New Zealand (laughs).

Do you have any funny stories you can tell about the shoot?

No, not directly. But I remember the first time I worked with Cate: that was 10 or 12 years ago in Portofino. She was with her husband and son. One of my sons also happened to be there. The two boys got along great, spending the whole day with each other; right away it felt like we were family, so I always look forward to working with her.

How do you manage to convey so much intimacy in your photos?

I’m honest and give people the feeling that they can relax with me. I communicate a certain ease. In most cases, that is the key to get people to open up. And unlike many other photographers, I start shooting early, while things are still being set up and the motive isn’t at its best. So we’re building up the set and experimenting with the light, and my pictures come about organically.

How important is an emotional link for a good photo?

Very important, but emotions only arise spontaneously. For example, the first time I worked with Nadja Auermann, the atmosphere in the afternoon sunlight in Los Angeles was so intense, that she suddenly began to cry. Photographing people can be very intimate. Sometimes it is so intimate that I feel like I am looking at the woman directly, and no longer through the lens.

Of all the personalities you have photographed, which has impressed you the most?

The French actress Jeanne Moreau. A few years ago I made a very interesting, but not very flattering photo of her and asked for her permission to publish a lightly retouched version of it. She was then 78, and just exclaimed,  “But Peter, what exactly do you wish to retouch?” That impressed me a lot.

You are known as the inventor of the supermodel. Your photos of Naomi Campell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz and Christy Turlington shot together are legendary. Did you ever imagine that that would make you go down in the history of photography?

No, not at all, something like that can’t be planned. You can’t just go and say: “now I’m going to do something legendary.” It’s a coincidence, something that just happens. Back then, at the end of the ‘80s, I just wanted to do something different. I no longer wanted to photograph women in haute-couture, laden with diamonds, carrying crocodile handbags. I wanted to bring their natural beauty to light, not change the world.

What was it like switching to digital photography?

It was a real drama (laughs). Time and time again I’ve battled with technology and have had to ask my assistant how something works. The main difference, though, is that photography in the past was a more intimate process between the model and the photographer. Today the camera is hooked up to the computer, and there are a thousand guys on the set. If you are really unlucky, you’ve even got an editor standing at the laptop commenting on every move the model makes, or suggesting how it could be done better. That, unfortunately, doesn’t have much to do with the photography.

What advice would you give today’s young photographers?

Don’t be an assistant to a famous photographer. It’s hard to free yourself later from their influence. It’s also important to photograph as much as you possibly can. That is the only way that quality and your own personal style can evolve.

When does photography become art?

The difference between art and business is superfluous in my opinion. For me, a photo is ‘art’ if it causes an emotional reaction or changes an established way of looking at things, or if it’s simply new and original.

How have the fashion industry and modeling business changed in comparison to the past?

Everything was friendlier and more personal before. Today the entire industry is just one marketing strategy. Numbers are the thing now, not authenticity or personality. I often have the feeling that I’m no longer dealing with people, but with empty shells. I think that’s a real shame.

What was your first reaction when you were asked if you would photograph the new Silhouette campaign?

I thought, what in the world is Silhouette (laughs)? I have to be honest and say that I had never heard of the brand before. But then I did a bit of research and was quickly very impressed. I had no idea how big and successful the company is.

Do you wear a Silhouette yourself?

Yes, and with great pleasure because the glasses don’t change my face, and they’re so light that I forget I’m wearing them.

Please fill in the blank: Peter Lindbergh is…

A really nice guy who is incredibly handsome (laughs). No, seriously. I am someone who tries everyday to take an interesting photograph once again.

Thanks Peter.

DAS Collection S/S13 – VFS

The DAS Collection established in 2008, was set up by Emirati sisters Reem and Hind Beljafla. Their initial aim was to update the abaya making it a fashion statement whilst maintaining its heritage and respecting the tradition attached to it. The DAS Collections designs also aim to empower women allowing them to be fashionable and conservative at the same time.

I had never heard of DAS  until London Fashion Week, and was excited by their fashion aims and interested to see how they convey this through their designs. The DAS Spring/Summer 2013 Ready to wear collection definitely did not disappoint. The collection used rich bold colours which were clearly inspired by Middle East and Indian style. Each piece made from luxurious fabric and with impeccable detailing of Arabic calligraphy and beading giving the collection a very rich feel. I was impressed with the tailoring of their designs as they definitely fulfilled their brief and more.

It was a very cohesive collection starting with deep blues flowing into vibrant golds and reds. Some key pieces stood out a dipped hem dress in a crisp fabric which was both on trend with a sophisticated air. The stand out dress of the evening has to be the finale gown, worn by supermodel Alex Wek. Alex Wek was beaming as she strutted down the catwalk to the audiences applause. Her red dress was draped in pearls and she gave the audience a double twirl.

DAS Collection embraces Middle East and Indian style whilst fusing it with current western trends. With this seasons brocade and oriental trends this collection entwines this and creates both beautiful and elegant designs.

Take a look at their entire collection here : http://www.dascollection.com/

Caprice & American InterContinental University celebrate Thanksgiving with Meals For Homeless

U.S. supermodel Caprice and American InterContinental University celebrate Thanksgiving with a meal for the homeless for second year running

Supermodel Caprice, along with students from American InterContinental University London, celebrated their heritage and the American holiday of Thanksgiving yesterday, 23rd November by providing a meal for homeless women for the second year running.

Supermodel Caprice, who is renowned for being an ‘all-American’ girl joined in the festivities by helping to carve the giant turkey and serve out the dinner – waving American flags all the way. AIU London students were also on hand to serve out the traditional Thanksgiving meal of turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potato, stuffing, and gravy. American flags and pumpkins decorated the room as the women enjoyed the seasonal feast.

Caprice said: “I’m so delighted to be sharing the spirit of Thanksgiving with the women of the Marylebone Project and the students of AIU London for the second year in a row. An American Thanksgiving is all about bringing people together, so to be able to celebrate with these inspiring women is a real honour.”

The roast turkey meal was provided to more than 60 homeless women at the Marylebone Project, based on Cosway Street, in Marylebone London. The Marylebone Project works with vulnerable homeless women to help empower them towards independent living through making informed choices.

Dr. Randolf Cooper, Campus Director and VP of Academic Affairs at AIU London, which is also based in Marylebone, said: “Thanksgiving arrived in America with the Pilgrims in the autumn of 1621, when the 53 surviving Pilgrims celebrated their successful harvest, as was the English custom. Today Americans celebrate Thanksgiving without a religious connotation; the emphasis is on abundance and family. We are happy to share that spirit with the community and delighted that our students can be involved in supporting a local charity such as the Marylebone Project.”

Established in 1978, AIU London offers a wide range of U.S. associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Fashion, Visual Communication, Interior design and Business. AIU London design programs are validated by the University for the Creative Arts www.ucreative.ac.uk to award BA (Hons) degrees in Fashion Design, Fashion Marketing, Fashion Marketing and Design, Interior Design and Visual Communication.
