Tom Williams & The Boat – Too Young | Music Review

When a band puts out an animated video it usually means the record company has made a commercial decision that they’re far too busy with the day job of playing shows and general touring to spend a couple of day piddling about under a motorway flyover, playing their future hit 58 times whilst looking longingly at the hired model acting as the love interest, who has been hired in for a couple of days. It doesn’t generally involve the lead singer “tracing over 1500 stills on a lightbox, putting in about 4-6 hours work a day for a couple of weeks”. The result of those 70 hours (i averaged it at 5 hours over the 2 weeks) spent doodling are superb.

The song itself is one of the more upbeat and “pop” songs on their ‘Teenage Blood’ record (my album of the year so far), which had a certain darkness, especially lyrically but the track is upbeat from the off. Great guitar riff, nice vocal harmonies in the chorus and just at the end they throw in a cheeky bit of violin. It’s splendid, shimmering summer folk. B-side ‘Right Side of My Head’ is an altogether more darker affair and could easily have suited the album. Dark, brooding and shimmering but retaining a beautiful melody. Two more tracks, two more reasons why Tom Williams & The Boat are one the best, most unique bands in Britain in 2012.

The Great Park – Stitch | Music Review

Let’s clear one thing up – The Great Park is a man not a band. He’s called Stephen Burch and he’s an Englishman living in the musical hotbed of Berlin, the place where David Bowie and Iggy Pop once shared a flat. There’s some great folk music coming out of Berlin right now courtesy of Woodland Recordings but none great than The Great Park.

Despite being British he doesn’t really play a huge amount in The UK. His 150-ish concerts in the last few years have mostly been in Continental Europe although he has been involved with the excellent Brighton-based label Bleeding heart recordings.

‘Stitch’ is a beast of a record at 31 songs long, spanning two discs. The 1st disc is of songs from his last few records and the 2nd is of live recordings from his various journeys. It’s good of Burch to take us on a physical journey through the live record as he takes us on an emotional one with him in his music. It’s an emotional journey that paints a vivid picture of a man with exposed, open wounds. Burch is clearly a man with the lyrically-introspective nature of Tom Williams. Perhaps also cut from the same anti-folk cloth too, although I’d imagine he’d want less of the anti.

The songs on the record are intimate, they’re at times melancholic and difficult to listen to but something about it draws you in so Burch can paint his bleak picture and on repeated listening he reveals new lyrical nuances, a bit like Forrest Gump does. Whoever coined the term “Problem Folk” for him deserves a medal – I can do no better myself. It’s not without hope though. My only hope is he continues to make records for a long time to come. Buy. This. Record. NOW!

Male & British | Friday Five

Yes, you should be working but you can’t be bothered. This is the bit where Frost will introduce you to five brilliant acts that if you’re not listening to already, then you ought to be. Following on from last week’s Female & British piece, we thought we’d showcase some of the great male-fronted British bands out there.

This week the brief is British and Female.

Alto45 are a great Suffolk-based indie band whose influences probably include The Delgados, The Postal Service and Graham Coxon. Stunning!
Tom Williams & The Boat – listen to them loud and enjoy. Indie-folk-rock etc. Thinking man’s music.
The Sea are a rather stunning rock band, comprised of brothers Peter and Alex Chisolm. A novelty that they’re from Cornwall, too.
Something Personal are a bunch of Welsh-based ruffians. They look ugly as sin but don’t let that put you off listening as they make music that is beautiful. Something for the weekend!
The Great Park is splendid. It’s the nom de plume of Berlin-based “problem folk” singer Stephen Burch. Check out a lot more of stuff here, including a lot of his work available to download free.
