Bride And Gloom For Wedding Guests: Cost of Being a Guest Mounts

Getting hitched abroad spells financial trouble for wedding guests

wedding guests cost of attending a wedding

  • One in ten (10%) people will be attending a wedding abroad in the next 12 months
  • Average cost of attending a wedding abroad is more than double the cost of being a guest at a wedding in the UK  (£564 v £247)
  • More than one in six couples planning to get married abroad (15%) are opting to do so as it works out cheaper for them than getting hitched in the UK
  • One in 10 (10%) Brits believe the bride and groom should subsidise their flights and accommodation if they want them to attend their wedding abroad

Are couples sacrificing their guest’s bank balance for their own happiness? With wedding season now upon us, it’s easy to see how the cost of a wedding can mount up – and not just for the bride and groom!

New research from Confused.com reveals that the average cost of attending a wedding abroad is more than twice as much as being a guest in the UK (£564 v £247). And with a quarter of UK couples (25%) planning to travel to distant shores in the next 18 months just to put a ring on it, their guests may be left facing a difficult situation.

The research from the leading price comparison site reveals that one in ten people (10%) are planning on attending a wedding abroad within the next year, despite the hefty price tag.  However, many wedding guests are showing a lot of negative sentiment when thinking about celebrating the happy couple’s big day in a foreign land. One in seven (14%) Brits would not travel abroad to attend a wedding regardless of who it was for, with over half (59%) preferring to attend a wedding in the UK.

Unsurprisingly, over a third (39%) of people think it’s a big request to ask people to travel abroad for a wedding. Nearly one in seven (13%) people admit that they don’t want to waste their limited holiday allowance paying a lot of money to only see the bride and groom for a few hours.

For those Brits who are willing to travel overseas for a wedding, restraint is being shown when buying wedding gifts. In fact, nearly one in 10 (9%) people don’t feel they need to buy the bride and groom a present at all if they are paying for flights and accommodation just to attend their nuptials.

To balance things out, some Brits (10%) feel that the bride and groom should subsidise their flights and accommodation if they want them there to share their big day. And for some lucky guests, this is in fact the case, as some happy couples are subsidising their guests to come to their wedding abroad. More than one in ten (12%) couples planning to get married abroad say they are doing this for their guests.

For those couples planning a wedding abroad, there are a variety of different factors influencing their decision – fromoverbearing parents and warring relatives to spiraling budgets, opting for a ceremony overseas can seem like the easier option for many.

A sixth of couples getting married abroad (15%) are choosing to do so as it works out cheaper than getting hitched in the UK. Nearly one in 10 (7%) also felt they were getting better value for money by travelling abroad for their nuptials rather than staying in the UK.

A quarter (25%) of couples planning to get married abroad admit they are doing so as it means they don’t have to invite every family member to the wedding, with more than one in six (15%) believing it would cause less arguments for them to go abroad to get hitched. In fact, one in 14 couples planning to get married abroad (7%) are doing so because they feel it would be less stressful than getting hitched in the UK.

Weather is also a key factor tempting British couples away from a traditional UK-based wedding. Over a third (34%) of couples getting married abroad chose to do so as they wanted guaranteed good weather and sunshine on their big day.

The five most popular destinations that people want to get hitched in include:

  • Caribbean (19%)
  • Australia (12%)
  • America (10%)
  • Canada (8%)
  • Cyprus (8%)

The ring could have cost from £15k making her studded bridal set worth around £300k. Wow!”

American Vogue editor Anna Wintour hosted a predictably stylish and extravagant wedding for her son, Charlie Shaffer, at her Long Island Estate. The wedding even had its own hashtag #masticinlove and the guests happily used it and shared away.

The bridesmaids wore Prada and sister-of-the-groom Bee Shaffer posted a picture of the bride’s Oscar de la Renta gown with the caption “always a bridesmaid”. If that was not fashionable enough all six flower girls wore matching Alexander McQueen dresses.

Wintour is thought to have worn Chanel. There was a string quartet to serenade the guests, they played from a tree house during the ceremony. There was an outdoor reception and the newlyweds danced underneath the stars for their first dance. The couple then jetted off to the Rocky Mountains for their honeymoon.

How beautiful….

Olivia Palermo’s Stylish Wedding

The fashion world has been waiting with bated breath to catch a glimpse of Olivia Palermo’s wedding dress. Forget Kim Kardashian, this was the wedding dress everyone wanted to see. The wait is now over.

The bride wore Carolina Herrera and did not sway away from her unique preppy style. Palermo’s dress is certainly unique. She choose a full-skirt silhouette but the twist is the dress is a cashmere sweater with a tulle skirt. This was worn over coordinating shorts. Seriously, who else could wear shorts to their wedding and look this stylish. She even wore a pair of her old Manolo courts, her “something blue”. They were the same shoes Carrie Bradshaw wore in her civil ceremony in the Sex & The City film. Check out the strong make-up too, another brave choice that works.

It was a small wedding in a quiet park in Bedford, New York, attended by only a handful of family members.

“We really wanted to keep this beautiful day very private and special to us and enjoyed the whole day with our family and two friends, Bedford is such an amazing and romantic countryside.” Palermo said.

If you wanted something grander, stay tuned. Apparently this is “part one – the civil ceremony” according to the couple. We can’t wait.

Wedding Planning For Dummies | Book Review

It is well-known that planning a wedding is hard. But it is not until you actually plan a wedding that you realise that it is even harder than you thought it would be. And then some.

weddingplanningfordummiesbookreview

The mixture of organisation, planning, ideas and different family members is quite a toxic mix, making even simple decisions seems insurmountable sometimes. I am planning my own wedding at the moment and it is rapidly approaching. So when Wedding Planning For Dummies dropped through our letterbox I was incredibly happy. I am that dummy and I need that book.

Before a relative reads this and panics about how close the wedding is, it is mostly done, I am just worried I will forget something. Not so with this book. It is thorough and fun to read. What’s more, it taught me things that I never even knew. It may be a ‘For Dummies’ book but, like all in the series, it leaves you feeling very competent in the end.

It has lots of tips on how to not pay too much, tips on finding the perfect venue, ideas for making your wedding personal and suggestions for the invitations.  Actually, it just has every basis covered that you will need for your wedmin.

It even tells you the different types of marquees you can get and I loved the section on how much alcohol to order depending on how many guests you have. It really was invaluable. Brilliant book, a must read for those planning their wedding. The authors really know their stuff.

Wedding Planning For Dummies is available here.

It sure is beautiful but if you were on your third marriage at 33, would you wear white?

First Look Of Kim Kardashian’s Wedding Dress

We wish we didn’t care but we do. Here it is, the first peek at Kim Kardashian’s wedding dress, and we think it’s beautiful. She may be 33-years-old and on her third marriage, but that hasn’t stopped her going all-out again. Let’s just hope this one lasts. What do you think?

Brides Embrace Grey Wedding Dresses After Kim Kardashian’s Vogue Cover

She is not exactly known as a high-fashion icon but it seems that notorious Vogue cover really has given Kim Kardashian some of the credibility she craves, along with some fashion kudos. eBay has seen a mammoth 260%* surge in sales of grey wedding dresses since Kim Kardashian’s recent appearance on the cover of Vogue (with fiancé Kanye West), wearing a similar design.

Despite growing rumblings about ‘Kimye’s’ upcoming ceremony in France, the chosen design for Kim’s wedding dress is still tightly under wraps. But it’s the stunning grey number she wore on the fashion bible’s April cover – with a sweetheart neckline and nipped waist – that British brides-to-be are coveting, proving that this surprising trend is one-to-watch this spring.

Muted grey tones, punchy floral designs, pastel blues and girlish greens were among the big hitters at the London Bridal Show in April, all prompting many women to reconsider the conventional white dress. Sales of these fashionable colours have similarly increased on eBay, with green wedding dresses up by 72%, blue gowns by 95%, and floral prints up by an incredible 107%*.
