Whisky – blended for Christmas

Johnny walker Blue and Famous Grouse mellow gold

Johnny Walker Blue Label and Famous Grouse Mellow Gold – two great drinks for Christmas

When my children were small they used to have a Greek childminder. When we went to pick up our kids, her entire family – aunts, uncles, in-laws from Cyprus – would often be present. They treated me and my wife as if we were part of the extended family and often we’d end up staying for dinner.

On festive occasions – Christmas, Easter, birthdays – I would usually bring a bottle of whisky. And the one that the Greek men most enjoyed was Johnny Walker – particularly the more expensive black label. They didn’t want fancy single malts, with all those peaty smells. They wanted a very smooth, high quality blended whisky.

I mention this because they would have loved Johnny Walker’s new Blue Label. It’s not cheap and it’s not something for the more serious lover of single malts, but it’s probably the smoothest and best blended whisky on the market. With lovely tastes of pepper and honey and a slight smokiness, it’s something to savour. Please don’t pollute it with ginger ale or ice. Just sip it gently, enjoying the roundness on your tongue. Perhaps wash it down with a glass of cold water, just to cleanse the palate. It’s a superb drink and worth taking time to appreciate. Incidentally it’s only available at a few selected dealers, and it costs £135 a bottle, but for that price you do get your name engraved on the bottle.

Around Christmas many of the distillers are producing slightly more distinctive types of whisky. Famous Grouse is offering something called Mellow Gold (£20 per 75cl at Tesco). It’s similar to the normal Famous Grouse – another fine blended whisky – but this one has been left in sherry and bourbon casks. As a result, it has a fuller oaky flavour and the sweetness of raisins and a touch of dried fruit. It’s a good one for Christmas, not because it’s better or worse than the regular whisky, but because Christmas is remarkable time of year and should be marked with something which is just a bit out of the ordinary.

A Signature change for Grants Whisky

Grants Signature - with the blue label - with the original

Grants Signature – with the blue label – with the original

Grants – the whisky people – have just produced a new line of whisky. Grants Signature whisky comes with a distinctive blue label. But more importantly, it has a pleasantly biscuity and caramel taste.

Grants is a blended whisky rather than a single malt – so none of those flavours of peat and heather that whiskey lovers like to go on about. But it is a very good blended whisky – crisp, clean and has none of that burnt after-taste that you often get with cheap drinks.

As a seasonal drink, Grants Signature makes a pleasant change from the original (with the red label). Oh, and it’s a great mixer. When there’s a touch of frost in the air, there’s nothing nicer than a good whisky with a splash of ginger wine on top – preferably consumed in front of an open fire. Grants Signature is ideally suited for this treatment.

Grants signature is £19 for 75cl at most supermarkets.

Snow Leopard Vodka

This vodka (made with spelt, the so-called ‘grandfather of grains’) was created by a passionate conservationist determined to save these critically endangered big cats. Which is why we should all buy one this Christmas.

Stephen Sparrow, an ex-drinks industry expert, heard about the snow leopard’s plight during a trip to the Himalayas. Shocked at learning there were less than 5,000 left in the wild, he came back and founded the Snow Leopard Trust UK – and then created this super-premium vodka to help fund its projects. Stephen has set a global goal to raise a million dollars annually for snow leopard conservation by 2025. That’s the the figure the President of the Snow Leopard Trust has advised could provide the ‘step change’ to remove the animal from the endangered list. This goal has been helped by the vodka recently gaining national distribution in Waitrose.com

With 15% of the vodka’s profit going direct to the Snow Leopard Trust, funds are provided to community-based conservation projects. These range from replacing farmers’ livestock that might be taken by snow leopards; through to helping educate herders’ children and training for adults in spinning wool and handicrafts for extra income. Supporting these projects helps educate the local communities and fosters a positive attitude towards the snow leopard.

£36.00 RRP for a 70cl bottle and available at Waitrose.com, Harvey Nichols and Ocado.com, as well as all good independent drinks retailers. Snowleopardtrustuk.org / snowleopardvodka.co.uk

Shot in The British Virgin Islands, Caribbean and London respectively, the story begins with Law and Giannini sipping JOHNNIE WALKER BLUE LABEL whisky on a truly unique hand-crafted boat as they look out across a stunning ocean seascape. We hear Law’s character state that he wants to buy the boat, but it is not for sale and the only way he can get it, is by putting on a truly unique performance. The wager begins.

Commenting on his role and involvement in the film, Law says: “The film is about improvement and progress and this is something I try to do in my work and life. Whiskey Cocktail Recipes | Cocktail Ideas

With cocktail season fast-approaching, thirsty folk on the search for the perfect summer sundowner need look no further than The Wild Geese whiskey cocktails.

The super premium Irish whiskey makers have teamed up with renowned bartender Marian Beke of critically acclaimed, Nightjar, voted one of the world’s best cocktail bars, to create a range of exclusive cocktails perfect for those long sunny days. Multi award winning The Wild Geese, enlisted the expertise of Marian, to hand-craft an array of bespoke and soulful cocktails bursting with intense flavour and dressed with delicate garnishes.

The first in the line-up, The Irish Apple, will invigorate and refresh at the end of a hot, balmy summer’s evening. The Wild Geese Classic Blend is fused with dry apple cider and tart rhubarb juice to create a cocktail to enjoy whilst soaking up the last of the rays. Sweet caramel is drizzled over the top of the long drink to add a touch of sweetness to this artisanal cocktail.

The Sarsfield Swizzle is a twist on the classic swizzle cocktail with a hint of spice. The Wild Geese Classic Blend is firstly mixed with crisp, botanical gin syrup and a dash of green tea bitters. Tangy lemon balm is added to the drink to bring out the citrus notes in The Wild Geese Classic Blend, and finally topped up with lemongrass and chilli beer for a zingy finish. Named after Patrick Sarsfield, the Irish hero who led the original Wild Geese in 1691, this cocktail mixes innovation and tradition perfectly.

For the third recipe, Beke marries The Wild Geese Rare Irish with the exotic juices of the Ugly Fruit, to achieve the ultimate bittersweet serve. The Freedom Sour is an innovative take on the ever-popular Whiskey Sour, freshened up with maple syrup and a layer of Matcha tea foam.

The three times voted ‘Best Irish Whiskey’ collection is made with superb quality aged Irish Whiskey stock and uses a special Extended Double Distillation process, creating a unique smoothness and richness unlike any other whiskey. The subtle and complex flavours are created using a pioneering distillation process, providing an unusual balance between robust and spicy malt, and light smooth grain.

Burn’s Night At Seven Park Place By William Drabble Review

Situated in the luxurious St James Hotel and Club, Seven Park Place is a Michelin-starred venue with all the class you would expect. I joined a fun and varied group of women for a Burn’s Night Preview; a six-course meal with matching wine that finishes with a glass of Highland Park 18-year-old whiskey. This is what we had:
haggis ravoli Seven Park Place
scallops(Sorry about the pictures. They were taken on my Blackberry so I could be discreet)
Uig Lodge smoked haddock soup with whiskey
Seared hand-dived Scottish scallops with garlic puree and parsley oil
The wine we had with these courses: Solo Quinta, Cramele Recas, Romania, 2012
I have never had soup with whiskey before but what a clever idea. This soup is just stunning, with perfectly cooked smoked haddock. I love scallops and these seared scallops with garlic puree and parsley oil were perfect on every level.
scottishfood haggis
Poached Scottish langoustine with buttered cabbage, foie gras sauce and truffle
Ravioli of haggis with confit of turnip, whiskey and thyme jus
The wine served with this course: Riesling Trocken Qba, Sybille Kuntz, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany 2010
The poached langoustine was just superb, one of my fellow diners called it a ‘posh prawn cocktail’. It just tastes like some sort of heaven. The ravioli of haggis is a stunning invention from William Drabble. It is such a smart idea and it tastes amazing, as does the sauce which sounds like a weird combination but really works.
venison
Saddle of Scottish highland venison with beetroot
Wine: Cabernet Sauvignon Royale, Koyle Estate, Colchagua Valley, Chile, 2009
The venison is perfectly cooked and the whole meal just works amazingly.
cheese
Selection of British cheese by Paxton & Whitfield
A wonderful selection of cheese. Very tasty.
souffle
Souffle of Scottish raspberries with dark chocolate sauce
Wine: Coteaux-Du-Layon Saint-Aubin, Domaine Des Barres, Loire Valley, France, 2012
This souffle is impressive not just because it tastes delicious, but also because it was huge and arrived from two floors down still  beautifully risen. It is the best souffle I have ever had and the dark chocolate sauce is perfect. The texture of the souffle is great. A wonderful dessert. Seven Park Place is a Michelin-starred venue and even if you didn’t know this before you went, it would soon be obvious. The food will be some of the best you have ever tasted and the imagination of the chef is truly impressive.
truffle
Chocolate and Apple Truffles

These truffles were unbelievable. And the one in the middle was like a very posh apple fruit pastel. I could eat these everyday and not even care if I got fat. Wow and wow.

And to finish….
highlandparkwhiskey
A glass of Highland Park 18-year-old Whiskey
What to say? Great whiskey: true luxury. After the meal we got to have a chat with William Drabble and I promptly made him an honoury Scot. I complimented William on his cooking and he swept away the compliment by saying it was the good, Scottish, ingredients. He is far too modest and also said that the food is simple as you have to realise that the other people in the kitchen cannot cook as well as you. William manages to make food heaven in a small kitchen, two-floors down, with a staff of only six. Both impressive and surprising. Williams mantra is, “Make it simple, think about it and make it idiot-proof.” Sounds like the perfect system. In the kitchen they drink tea in the morning and water to clean their palette so they can taste the food properly.During the evening sommelier Marco Feraldi told us about each wine. Marco really knows his stuff and every single wine was amazing. I am very fussy about wine but I loved it all. Especially the Solo Quinta, Cramele Recas, Romania, 2012. I had never tried Romanian wine before but I am now hooked.I had a wonderful evening, the food truly was stunning. The perfect place for the perfect Burns Night.

You can catch the Burn’s Night Menu at  Seven Park Place between January 20-26.

Seven Park Place, St James Hotel and Club, 7-8 Park Place, SW1A 1LS.

Flaviar, The First European Members Club For Spirits Aficionados, Review

I am not a natural whiskey drinker. Mainly because I am a lightweight who barely drinks and whiskey is strong. But as the editor of this magazine I have come to appreciate whiskey due to the amount of samples we receive.
I have come to appreciate different types of whiskey, the sometimes subtle differences from one bottle to another is great and interesting. So when the opportunity to try Flaviar, a members club for spirit aficionados, came I jumped at the chance, and I am glad I did.
You get a tasting pack of five different 50ml bottles of whiskey. The 50ml is enough for three tasting shots. In my tasting pack is Nikka From The Barrel Whiskey, Hakushu Bourbon Barrel Whiskey (full of flavour and kick), Taketsuru 12 year Whiskey, Isawa 10 Year Whiskey, and Yamazaki 12 Year Whiskey. They are strong, one is even 51.4%. But they are luxurious and decadent. An ideal present to yourself or others. The whiskey is incredibly good quality as you would expect. For the £24.99 it costs, considering the quality and quantity, I think that is a bargain. You would be surprised how much 50ml is. 12 year old whiskey is incredibly special. These are hard-to-find bottles of whiskey at an incredibly affordable price. So, Flaviar: Frost loves….

FLAVIAR, the first European members club for spirits aficionados starts their second year with $400k seed funding and a launch of Flaviar Deals
Spirits subscription commerce startup Flaviar entered its second year of business with the launch of Flaviar Deals – limited sales of selected hard-to-find full bottles of high quality spirits at very special prices.
Flaviar’s unique approach to spirit tasting through storytelling and perfectly designed products received great feedback from the customers, many of whom were interested in the purchase of full bottles as well – thus the launch of Flaviar Deals. Just like the samples in Flaviar tasting packs, Flaviar Deals will also feature a fine selection of spirits, ranging from some of today’s most renowned brands to those from craft distilleries worldwide. The company also announced to have raised seed funding that will be used to pursue further growth of membership and new markets expansion, allowing them to ship the tasting packs also outside the EU.
Oliver Holle, founder and CEO of SpeedInvest, said:
“Flaviar is one of the rare examples that combines a proven model that can scale, with expert founders that think global. It is the poster child of European startups and we are really happy to be part of it.”
First year’s lesson: There is more to spirits than Whisky
To date, Flaviar’s curators already prepared 16 packs with 80 drinks. “In the first year it was all about exploring new categories. Many spirits lovers were amazed to discover that there is much more to top-notch spirits than Whiskies. Rums were one of the biggest surprises and a big hit, but we also introduced our members to some great cognacs, grappas, peated whiskeys and even Austrian schnaps,” says Soba, founder and CEO. “We have some great discoveries on the shelves prepared for our future packs and we are very excited about introducing them to our members – with the last pack shipped, we took them to Japan.”
Personal spirits sommelier on your doorstep each month
Flaviar monthly tasting packs of 5 spirits samples are delivered in a robust and eco-friendly packaging. Each stylish gift-ready black package is a story itself, told by the spirits as well as by witty comments, tasting instructions and one-of-a-kind SmartAss Corner, prepared by Flaviar curators to help you improve your spirits-smarts. “Once they were pirates, arrrr!”, “Star Spangled Bourbon” and “Schnaps of the Alps” are just some of the previous Flaviar packs’ names. Each pack is available at only GBP 24.99, (compared to a GBP 200-300 full bottle price of a typical spirit included). “Flaviar promises to teach newbies to appreciate spirits, engage in new social activity and improve their smarts. As for aficionados, they get a chance to discover new flavours, show off their extensive knowledge and collections, meet with others alike and teach newbies. We encourage everyone to taste and fully appreciate specific properties of top shelf spirits at home, within the comfortable circle of their friends. Tasting experience is best when done in a small group, allowing one to “compare notes” and observations. That is why our tasting packs include five 50 ml samples, which is enough for 3 tasting shots,” says Soba, who is a seasoned spirit-maker himself. “After the tasting members can fill their virtual MyBar cabinets on Flaviar.com with information on the most wanted, tasted or owned spirits, thereby creating valuable feedback for the producers and us as curators.”
